More prolific than Wissa & Sesko: Newcastle plot move to sign £40m "menace"

It’s been a testing summer window for Newcastle United.

Despite their return to the Champions League and a squad brimming with youthful potential, key attacking targets continue to slip through their fingers.

Bryan Mbeumo, João Pedro and Hugo Ekitike have all eluded the Magpies, while names like Benjamin Šeško remain out of reach for now.

Attention recently turned to Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, who left the Bees’ pre-season camp amid mounting speculation about his future and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Capable of playing across the front line and known for his pressing and intelligent movement, Wissa fits the profile of a player who could offer cover and competition for Alexander Isak, who remains a concern for Eddie Howe in terms of durability.

But Newcastle may have their sights set on a less polished alternative: a young forward who outscored Wissa and Sesko last season and could offer the clinical edge that’s been missing at key moments.

Newcastle looking at £40m striker

At 22, Mika Biereth might not be a household name in the Premier League just yet, but his numbers over the past 12 months have turned heads across Europe.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Well, after that stunning form, Newcastle, Wolves, Aston Villa and Everton have all been quoted as having an interest, according to Caught Offside, as they plot their respective moves.

After spending the first half of the 2023/24 season at SK Sturm Graz, the former Arsenal academy product made a €13m move to Monaco in January but according to the report, he could go for £40m now.

Across both stints, the forward proved himself to be a “menace” in the words of The Athletic’s Alex Barker, racking up 27 goals in all competitions, including 24 in domestic leagues alone. That’s more than Wissa (20) and Sesko (21) managed during the same campaign.

What makes this even more striking is his underlying data: those 24 goals came from an expected goals tally of just 11.3.

That’s a dramatic overperformance, one reminiscent of Darwin Núñez’s final season at Benfica, and while such numbers often regress over time, they still signal elite-level finishing instincts.

How Wissa compares to Biereth

According to data from FBref, Biereth registered 1.66 shots on target per 90 minutes last season, with 60.5% of his total efforts hitting the target. By comparison, Wissa, a proven Premier League operator, managed 1.27 shots on target per 90, with an accuracy of just 45.6%.

Yoane Wissa celebrates for Brentford.

Biereth’s sharpness in front of goal would complement Newcastle’s creative wingers, particularly Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga, who regularly generate chances with their direct running and early deliveries into the box.

However, Biereth is not yet the finished article. His contribution to build-up play is minimal compared to Wissa’s. He averaged just 10.9 passes per 90 and registered fewer progressive carries (1.02) and progressive passes (1.75) than Wissa (1.85 and 2.07, respectively).

He also ranks poorly in aerial duels, winning just 33.3% of his battles despite standing 6 foot 2 – a surprising stat when compared to Wissa’s 45.5% success rate, which places the Brentford man in the 64th percentile despite his smaller frame.

This same data from FBref shows that Wissa’s pressing numbers are also superior. He makes more tackles per 90 (0.68 vs 0.36), including more in the final third (0.25 vs 0.15), and he completes take-ons at a far higher rate (30.6% vs just 9.1%). These metrics suggest Wissa is far more integrated into all phases of play, from defensive pressing to link-up.

Still, that may be exactly why Biereth would offer something different. Newcastle already have a multi-functional No.9 in Isak, and what they lack is a game-changing finisher who can be introduced in moments of chaos.

Alexander Isak

For £40m, Monaco may be willing to sell, especially after signing Ansu Fati and with other forwards like Breel Embolo and Folarin Balogun on their books.

Newcastle would be gambling on potential, but it’s the kind of gamble that could prove inspired, particularly in scenarios against deep blocks where space is at a premium.

If Newcastle want a ready-made Premier League performer, Wissa ticks every box. He presses, combines well, and contributes defensively. But if they’re looking for a match-winner, someone who can convert at a rate few strikers in Europe can match, Biereth deserves serious consideration.

His raw data suggests an elite finisher in the making, and with the right service and role, he could offer Newcastle something they haven’t had in years: a true penalty-box predator with the confidence and tools to decide games on his own.

Fabrizio Romano: Player tells manager he wants to join Chelsea, terms agreed

Fabrizio Romano has shared a transfer update involving Chelsea, with BlueCo continuing to make a splash this summer as Enzo Maresca gears up for a crucial 2025/2026 campaign.

Unofficial Chelsea swap deal possible as club open talks for Maresca outcast

It could be one in, one out at Stamford Bridge.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 23, 2025

Fresh off their triumphs in the Conference League and Club World Cup, Chelsea have absolutely zero intention of letting up on the trophy front, and there is every reason to believe they could be contenders for the Premier League title next season.

Maresca’s side briefly contended with Liverpool last term before falling away, but the Blues are now making a series of transfer statements in their bid to close the gap.

Having already signed Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro for a total of around £145 million, Chelsea are also in talks to sign RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons right now.

Simons is believed to be their “new attacking priority”, according to journalist Simon Phillips, and a deal for the Netherlands international could even be done for close to £40 million – a far cry beneath the widely reported £65m potential fee.

This is partly backed up by other reliable media sources, like Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, who reports that very positive talks between Leipzig and Chelsea have taken place.

Given the Bundesliga side’s simultaneous negotiations for Carney Chukwuemeka, an ‘unofficial swap deal’ is also very possible here.

Amidst their pursuit of Simons, Chelsea are also very close to ending their search for another centre-back.

Indeed, Ajax defender Jorrel Hato is their chief target in this regard, with Romano reporting that they’re now in ongoing talks to sign the Dutchman.

The player’s own agent even confirmed this story in an interview with De Telegraaf, so this is definitely one to watch for the coming days.

Now, Romano has shared more information on the versatile centre-back, and he has a burning desire for Stamford Bridge.

Jorrel Hato tells John Heitinga he wants to join Chelsea

It is believed that Hato has made it clear to Ajax and their manager, John Heitinga, that he wants to join Chelsea after also agreeing personal terms with the west Londoners.

Chelsea talks with Ajax for Hato are now very advanced, and in more good news for Maresca, their top defensive target could join for just £35 million.

“Chelsea have reached agreement on personal terms with Jorrel Hato and the defender has asked Ajax to leave,” wrote Romano on X.

“Negotiations advancing to final stages, as fee discussed now is around €40m. Hato informed Ajax management and the manager of his clear desire to join.”

The 19-year-old primarily played as a left-back under Franceso Farioli last season, meaning he’d be comfortable operating as cover for Marc Cucurella as well as at the heart of Maresca’s backline.

Hato’s potential signing kills two birds with one stone, and despite his age, the player has plenty of top-level experience already.

Nottingham Forest eyeing move to sign £8.5m-a-year Bayern ace in £30m deal

Following an excellent campaign last time out, Nottingham Forest are looking to use the summer transfer window to ensure that their European qualification was no blip. And that could reportedly start with the addition of a Bayern Munich midfielder.

Nuno Espirito Santo extends Nottingham Forest contract

Starting as they mean to go on this summer, Nottingham Forest confirmed the news that Nuno Espirito Santo has agreed a new deal with the club and will now remain in charge until at least 2028.

The Portuguese manager has taken the Midlands club to fresh heights in the Premier League and Evangelos Marinakis was clearly keen to ensure that he remains the man for the job at the City Ground.

The Greek owner told Nottingham Forest’s official media channels: “Nuno has made a great impact and performed very well during his time with us so far.

With that contract signed and delivered, Nottingham Forest can now turn their attention back towards the transfer window. Already, it looks as though Jair Cunha, Igor Jesus and Cuiabano are all on their way from Brazilian club Botafogo, who just defeated Paris Saint-Germain at the Club World Cup. But those in the Midlands could yet return to the market.

Reports are now suggesting that the Midlands club have joined the race to sign a Champions League midfielder who looks destined to return to the Premier League this summer.

Nottingham Forest join £30m Palhinha race

According to Caught Offside, Nottingham Forest are now eyeing a move to sign Joao Palhinha this summer. The midfielder is reportedly free to leave Bayern Munich for up to €35m (£30m) in what is a cut-price deal considering that the German giants initially paid Fulham as much as £42m to secure his signature just one year ago.

The transfer fee is unlikely to be the main sticking point in any deal. Instead, there may be concerns about Palhinha’s wage demands. If he requests the same £8.5m-a-year contract that he earns at Bayern Munich then the likes of Nottingham Forest could instantly look elsewhere for options.

With Manchester United, former club Fulham, Benfica and West Ham United also in the race for his signature, Palhinha may have a decision to make regarding his salary if he wants to secure an exit away from Munich this summer.

At his best, there’s no denying that Palhinha is capable of making a significant impact with Fulham boss Marco Silva dubbing him “impressive” during his time in West London. Now, however, the Portugal international desperately needs a return to English football to rediscover his top form.

Chelsea plot new talks for "quick" player with £46m duo up for sale

Chelsea are planning to overhaul a key area of Enzo Maresca’s squad this summer, with BlueCo looking to sell two players and potentially open new talks for an elite-level star.

Chelsea continue transfer planning after botched CWC deals

In high-profile fashion, Chelsea missed out on a couple of anticipated deals before the pre-Club World Cup transfer deadline at 7pm on Tuesday.

While Chelsea do have the arrival of Liam Delap to celebrate, with the English sensation set to bolster Maresca’s forward options for the CWC, the Blues couldn’t quite get Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens or AC Milan’s Mike Maignan over the line.

The former was a top target for Maresca in the wide area, and Chelsea did their utmost to make it happen – lodging three different offers in the build up to Tuesday’s deadline, only for Dortmund to reject them all and demand more money (Florian Plettenberg).

Chelsea went as high as £47 million in their bid to sign Gittens, but it was no use, with the west Londoners deciding to walk away from talks once it was clear a deal could not be done in time.

Their attempts to sign Maignan were equally frustrating.

Milan wanted around £25 million to sell the France international, who’s about to enter the final year of his contract and won’t sign a new one, but Chelsea were only willing to pay up to £13 million, meaning no agreement could be found (The Athletic).

AC Milan's MikeMaignanreacts

Given the 29-year-old’s pedigree as, arguably, one of the world’s finest keepers and France’s undisputed number one, there is frustration among Chelsea supporters that they didn’t stump up the cash for a player who would’ve undoubtedly been an upgrade on their current crop.

Maignan was also known to be very keen on a move to Chelsea, and for just £25m, the shot-stopper could’ve been a serious bargain.

However, their transfer plans are continuing into the summer, with reliable journalist Simon Phillips suggesting that a move for Maignan certainly isn’t off the cards.

Chelsea could hold new Mike Maignan talks next week

The Blues want to sell both Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic, with Chelsea reportedly valuing the latter at around £21 million. Sanchez joined the club for around £25 million from Brighton, and you’d Chelsea would want to recuperate a large portion of that fee.

With the £46 million duo up for sale, one source has told Phillips that Chelsea could even reopen talks for Maignan as early as next week.

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

“They held talks with Milan, Maignan wants the move, and Chelsea actually believed they were about to sign him with a fee agreement close,” said Phillips, via his Substack.

“AC Milan moved the goalposts on the fee in the final stages and that was enough for Chelsea to back out, for now.

“However, they are likely to go back for Maignan. I know initially we heard yesterday that they wouldn’t be going back for him at all. But after further digging by our sources last night, we’ve heard that Chelsea are now likely to revisit this deal later in the summer window. One source even suggests they could go back in for talks as soon as next week.

“Chelsea don’t want to be pushed over in negotiations so some of this is about sending messages as well as not appearing desperate to land a new goalkeeper.

“And that is because they want to sell both Djordje Petrovic and Robert Sanchez this summer. Obviously this needs suitors and those suitors to pay the valuations to make this happen, but this is their intentions.”

Called “one of the best” keepers in world football by Alisson, the Liverpool star also heralded Maignan’s “quick” burst of pace off the line, and a truly quality number one could be one of the final missing pieces of Maresca’s jigsaw.

Imagine him & Nypan: Aston Villa open talks to sign Jhon Duran 2.0

Aston Villa may not win a trophy this season, but the club remain in the hunt for a Champions League spot next term.

Unai Emery is looking ahead to the summer transfer window, however, as he aims to bolster his squad.

Sverre Nypan has been earmarked as a long-term target for the Midlands side, and it looks as though they have won the race for his signature.

The wonderkid could become the next best thing and Villa have acted swiftly. Might they be moving ahead to sign another talented teenager?

Aston Villa pressing ahead to sign French sensation

Reports in France claim that Villa are closing in on a deal to sign 18-year-old Kenny Quetant this summer, with Foot Mercato outlining that talks have been held regarding a deal for the teenager.

The youngster has yet to make a senior appearance for Le Havre, but there is no doubting how high his ceiling is.

Wrapping up a move early for Quetant could allow Emery to perhaps focus on other targets during the first few weeks of the transfer window.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

If a move does go through in the coming days, Emery might just have his next Jhon Duran.

Kenny Quetant can be Villa’s next Duran

Duran did have some experience at senior level before moving to Villa, playing 72 matches in spells with Chicago Fire and Envigado, although like Quetant, he was something of an unknown quantity upon his arrival for Villa Park.

17 goals and seven assists were deemed solid, if unspectacular, but there was something about the young Colombian. He had a spark. That was enough for Emery and co to fork out £18m for the then-19-year-old in January 2023.

Mainly used as an impact player at Villa, Duran’s eye for goal gave Emery a unique weapon from the bench and this is something Quetant could offer, especially during his first season at the club.

Last term, the teenager scored 11 goals for Le Harve’s U19 side, showing plenty of promise. It is a matter of when and not if he makes his senior club debut. The future of the club in attack looks promising, especially considering Emery is in talks with both Nypan and Quetant.

The Norwegian talent was superb for Rosenborg in the top flight last season. Eight goals and seven assists were recorded, while the 18-year-old also created seven big chances and averaged 1.4 key passes per game for his club.

Throughout the 2025 campaign, Nypan ranks in the top 6% for touches in the opposition box, along with ranking in the top 6% for total shots in the Norwegian top flight.

These forward-thinking abilities could make him an excellent player for Villa and one who would shine while operating just behind Quetant. Of course, the club won’t see the best of both players until they become fully integrated into the team.

Once they do begin to play on a regular basis, Villa could have two starlets who are ready to take the Premier League by storm one day, just like Duran did ever so briefly.

Four questions for India as they enter a new era in white-ball cricket

A new T20I captain is in place at the start of a new World Cup cycle, while the ODI squad begins its preparations for next year’s Champions Trophy

Shashank Kishore24-Jul-20246:05

The start of Gill’s captaincy internship, and a fresh take on Rohit-Kohli’s workload

A sense of anticipation surrounds India’s tour of Sri Lanka, which might have otherwise been fairly low-key, with Gautam Gambhir beginning his stint as the head coach, and with India beginning a new era in white-ball cricket following their T20 World Cup triumph. The make-up of India’s T20I squad in the aftermath of the three big retirements following the World Cup win and the composition of the ODI squad in the run-up to next year’s Champions Trophy will be keenly looked at.

How will Suryakumar handle the captaincy challenge?

In 2015, Suryakumar Yadav’s first brush with captaincy ended controversially when he gave up the leadership of his domestic side after being reprimanded by the Mumbai Cricket Association following complaints from his team-mates that he used abusive language on the field and in the dressing room. Nearly a decade on, Suryakumar is a far more mellow character, and a hugely evolved cricketer, one of the greats of the T20 format. The timing of his elevation to India’s T20I captaincy could not feel more apt.Related

  • Dravid to Gambhir: Crack a smile, it will shock people

  • Shastri: Gambhir's most important task will be to understand his players

  • Shubman Gill keen to improve his T20I performance

  • Where does the elevation of Gill and SKY leave Hardik?

  • Gambhir lays out his coaching philosophy

Suryakumar’s calmness and maturity, and his body of work as a batter, have won him several admirers, most notably the Ajit-Agarkar-led selection committee. Gambhir too was impressed by what he saw of Suryakumar during his later years at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), when he was elevated to vice-captaincy.Within three years of his international debut, Suryakumar is set to take over full-time, with the team management eyeing a two-year runway leading into India’s defence of their T20 crown at home and in Sri Lanka in 2026.6:24

Newsroom: What can we expect from SKY the captain?

So far, Suryakumar has captained India seven times in an interim capacity, when the job was entrusted upon him late last year with Rohit Sharma rested and Hardik Pandya out injured. Suryakumar was India’s second-highest run-getter in their 4-1 series win over Australia soon after the ODI World Cup last November, and he then led the T20I squad to a 1-1 scoreline in South Africa, where he scored 56 and 100 in two innings. The sample size is small, then, but the signs are promising. However, Suryakumar may need to tide over the potential undercurrents set in motion by his appointment, considering he will be leading Hardik, who captains him at Mumbai Indians, and who not long ago was viewed as India’s T20I captain-in-waiting.

Who is India’s T20I finisher?

With Shubman Gill vice-captain of both white-ball squads, it’s fairly certain he and Yashasvi Jaiswal will take the places of the recently retired Rohit and Virat Kohli at the top of the order in the T20Is, with Rishabh Pant at No. 3, and Suryakumar and Hardik certainties in the middle order. This leaves Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag, Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube potentially tussling for one spot. In the past, Gambhir has shown a liking for allrounders in a T20 set-up. When he assembled the squad at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Deepak Hooda, Marcus Stoinis and Krunal Pandya were all regulars. That Dube and Parag can chip in with the ball could work in their favour, but Rinku’s temperament and the numbers he has put up over his short career will be hard to look past.KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer could be in a fight to hold on to their spots in the ODI middle order•Associated Press

Which two out of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant?

It would have seemed inconceivable after last year’s ODI World Cup that Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul would be fighting for their places in the ODI middle order ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy. But it’s a reality they may have to contend with if the selectors deem Pant to be the first-choice keeper, which Rahul was when Pant was recovering from the injuries he sustained in a car crash.Rohit, Gill and Kohli pick themselves at the top of the order. Assuming Hardik, who has opted for a break from the Sri Lanka ODIs, is a certainty if fully fit, there’s room for only two of Pant, Iyer and Rahul in the middle order, which means they could all be auditioning for these two spots during the ODIs in Sri Lanka. It’s possible only two may play in this series too, if India want a batting allrounder such as Parag or Dube in the top six.The scrutiny is likely to be a lot less for Axar Patel, for whom this is a chance to show the selectors he can be an able alternative to the rested Ravindra Jadeja, while Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar have opportunities to build on their gains from Zimbabwe.

How will the fast-bowling bench perform?Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj are India’s top three fast bowlers across formats. But with the focus likely to shift to Test cricket after this tour – India play five home Tests and five in Australia from September to January – Gambhir is keen to ensure that workloads are managed carefully. It’s in line with this principle that Bumrah has been rested for the Sri Lanka tour, while Shami is building his way back to full fitness after a long injury break.Siraj is likely to spearhead the attack across both formats in Sri Lanka, and while Arshdeep Singh has established himself as a first-choice pick in T20Is, he’ll have a chance to make a case in the 50-overs format too. Khaleel Ahmed and the bristling Harshit Rana (picked for T20Is and ODIs respectively) will also be looked at closely. Then there are the likes of Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan (both not picked) and Mayank Yadav (who is on the mend from multiple injuries), who will have the upcoming domestic season beginning with the Duleep Trophy on September 5 to make their cases.

Luke Wright captains ESPNcricinfo's all-time T20 Blast XI

Our expert panel make their picks ahead of the 20th season of English domestic T20

ESPNcricinfo staff23-May-20221. Alex Hales (Nottinghamshire)

Hales has been among the Blast’s most destructive batters for more than a decade, earning his first England call-up on the back of his T20 form for Notts in 2011. He is the club’s all-time leading run-scorer in the format and is the only man in the top 50 run-scorers in the Blast’s history with a strike rate above 150 in the tournament.Luke Wright is the Blast’s all-time leading run-scorer•Getty Images2. Luke Wright (Sussex, captain)

The Blast’s all-time leading run-scorer and the captain of this side, Wright joined Sussex in 2004 and has been a mainstay of their T20 set-up ever since, captaining them from 2015 to 2021. He was part of their title-winning 2009 team but has got better with age and has become increasingly reliable as an opener since giving up bowling.3. Moeen Ali (Worcestershire)

A prolific allrounder throughout his domestic T20 career, ruthlessly taking down county spinners and reliably chipping in with the bat. Moeen became Worcestershire’s captain in 2018 and immediately led them to their first-ever title; the following season, he hit one of the Blast’s great hundreds in the quarter-finals against Sussex.Moeen Ali captained Worcestershire to the 2018 title•Getty Images4. Samit Patel (Nottinghamshire)

The Blast’s ubiquitous presence: six men in the tournament’s history have more runs, only one has more wickets and nobody has played as many games. It seemed a far cry when his first over in the competition went for 28 back in 2003 but Patel has become a domestic T20 legend, winning two titles on top of his remarkable individual success.5. Jos Buttler (Somerset/Lancashire, wicketkeeper)

It has become rare for Buttler to play more than a handful of Blast games in a season due to his England and IPL commitments but he was one of the competition’s stars as a young player. His 55 not out off 23 balls in Somerset’s 2010 semi-final was his first major televised innings and he continued to thrive after moving to Lancashire, playing a walk-on role in their 2015 title. Now one of the world’s best T20 openers but No. 5 in this team, having spent the overwhelming majority of his domestic career in the middle order.Buttler announced himself as a T20 cricketer at Somerset•Getty Images6. Ravi Bopara (Essex/Sussex)

Like Patel, Bopara has been an ever-present in the Blast, making his debut as a non-bowling No. 9 as a teenager in 2003; it was an inauspicious start but he has thrived in a number of different roles at both Essex and Sussex. He has batted everywhere from No. 1-10 but is a finisher in this side – the role in which he thrived for Essex when taking them to their only T20 title in 2019.7. Dan Christian (Hampshire/Gloucestershire/Middlesex/Notts)

One of four men to win three Blast finals, including two as captain. Christian’s first experience of the Blast was as a jobbing allrounder for Hampshire in 2010, a stint remembered for the chaos induced by his hamstring injury in a dramatic ending to the final. He returned with Gloucestershire and Middlesex – where he once hit 129 in a losing cause – but has flourished at Notts, leading them to two titles and living up to his mantra that “old blokes win stuff”.ESPNcricinfo’s all-time T20 Blast XI•ESPNcricinfo Ltd8. Benny Howell (Hampshire/Gloucestershire)

Howell is Gloucestershire’s magical mystery man. Described by his ESPNcricinfo profile as a right-arm medium-pacer, he identifies himself as a ‘fast spinner’ who bowls quick cutters and knuckleballs – and few on the county circuit have found a reliable way to counter him. He is the only player in this team without a Blast winners’ medal, his only T20 appearances for Hampshire coming in the year between their two titles.Azhar Mahmood’s clinches a Surrey win•PA Photos9. Azhar Mahmood (Surrey/Kent)

Mahmood was part of the Surrey side that won the inaugural Twenty20 Cup back in 2003, finishing the season as the second-highest wicket-taker in the country, and was still an effective bowler by the time he played his final Blast game in 2016 at the age of 41. He was also prolific playing for Kent and spent half of his county career as a local player by virtue of his British citizenship.10. Danny Briggs (Hampshire/Sussex/Warwickshire)

Briggs’ emergence as a fresh-faced left-arm spinner coincided with – and contributed to – Hampshire’s T20 glory years: they won the title in his first and third seasons, in 2010 and 2012. His performances earned him a brief England call-up and he has continued to impress while flying under the radar since moving counties, first to Sussex, then to Warwickshire. He retains top spot in the all-time wicket-taking list.Danny Briggs is the Blast’s all-time leading wicket-taker•Getty Images11. Harry Gurney (Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire)

Gurney was Leicestershire’s leading wicket-taker when they won their record third title in 2011 – though missed Finals Day with a side strain – and developed into one of the country’s leading death bowlers at Notts, mixing up his pace and angle of attack and nailing his yorkers. He was key to their 2017 title, closing out the final with 4 for 17 to earn himself a second career on the franchise circuit.Other players who received votes:4 votes: Graham Napier, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, James Vince, David Willey

'Don't make the laws of cricket conflict with the spirit of cricket'

While some applauded Deepti Sharma for abiding by the rules of the game, others considered this mode of dismissal to be against the spirit of cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Sep-2022The third ODI between India and England at Lord’s ended with a clean sweep for India, but the final wicket garnered mixed reactions. Deepti Sharma noticed Charlie Dean backing up too far at the non-striker’s end in the 44th over with England needing 17 off 38 balls, and ran her out to claim the final wicket. While England players expressed disappointment at the dismissal, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur threw her support behind Deepti. The reactions on social media, too, were mixed. The MCC, the keeper of cricket’s laws, welcomed the debate but reiterated that what happened was within the laws. “The Law is clear, as it needs to be for all umpires to be able to easily interpret throughout all levels of the game and at all moments in the game,” the MCC said in a statement. “Cricket is a broad church and the spirit by which it is played is no different. As custodians of the Spirit of Cricket, MCC appreciates its application is interpreted differently across the globe.”Respectful debate is healthy and should continue, as where one person sees the bowler as breaching the Spirit in such examples, another will point at the non-striker gaining an unfair advantage by leaving their ground early.”MCC’s message to non-strikers continues to be to remain in their ground until they have seen the ball leave the bowler’s hand. Then dismissals, such as the one seen yesterday, cannot happen.”Whilst yesterday was indeed an unusual end to an exciting match, it was properly officiated and should not be considered as anything more.”Here are other reactions to the incident from social media.

There were a few England men’s players who didn’t seem to be too pleased with the mode of dismissal..
