'Don't make the laws of cricket conflict with the spirit of cricket'

While some applauded Deepti Sharma for abiding by the rules of the game, others considered this mode of dismissal to be against the spirit of cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Sep-2022The third ODI between India and England at Lord’s ended with a clean sweep for India, but the final wicket garnered mixed reactions. Deepti Sharma noticed Charlie Dean backing up too far at the non-striker’s end in the 44th over with England needing 17 off 38 balls, and ran her out to claim the final wicket. While England players expressed disappointment at the dismissal, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur threw her support behind Deepti. The reactions on social media, too, were mixed. The MCC, the keeper of cricket’s laws, welcomed the debate but reiterated that what happened was within the laws. “The Law is clear, as it needs to be for all umpires to be able to easily interpret throughout all levels of the game and at all moments in the game,” the MCC said in a statement. “Cricket is a broad church and the spirit by which it is played is no different. As custodians of the Spirit of Cricket, MCC appreciates its application is interpreted differently across the globe.”Respectful debate is healthy and should continue, as where one person sees the bowler as breaching the Spirit in such examples, another will point at the non-striker gaining an unfair advantage by leaving their ground early.”MCC’s message to non-strikers continues to be to remain in their ground until they have seen the ball leave the bowler’s hand. Then dismissals, such as the one seen yesterday, cannot happen.”Whilst yesterday was indeed an unusual end to an exciting match, it was properly officiated and should not be considered as anything more.”Here are other reactions to the incident from social media.

There were a few England men’s players who didn’t seem to be too pleased with the mode of dismissal..

Aaron Boone Went Off on the Media During Jomboy Podcast Appearance

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone made his first appearance on Jomboy's podcast since the All-Star break on Tuesday. The taping happened the morning after the Yankees lost 4-1 to the Toronto Blue Jays, and Boone was faced with some questions that he did not entirely enjoy answering.

Boone took issues with the hosts asking about the team not getting up for division games and the way they responded to the media after losses. Boone also went on the defensive when answering questions about shortstop Anthony Volpe.

You can watch the entire apperance here, but the video below shows Boone getting combative about the way the team is being treated by the media and fans.

“Understand the pestering, bantering, leading questions that are being asked of our guys,” said Boone. “And I don’t want them to just fly off the handle and be emotional. We’ve been pretty good over the years of compartmentalizing and dealing with the everyday grind of the regular season and playing in New York, and you start getting emotional and going down that road, it’s a bad trait.”

A few moments later Boone took issue with Jomboy pointing out the messaging from the Yankees was basically business as usual. At this point, Boone accused Jomboy of "cherry-picking answers" and not listening to all his answers.

Then Boone said, "Sorry, we're not, they're not robots," to which Jomboy responded that he wanted that and more "non-robotic" answers."

“I don’t care what you want," Boone quickly responded. "These are answers of pestering, everyday questions. I want our guys in a good like, boom. We are locked in, when it’s s–tty and when it’s really good, and all in between. I want us locked. I want us showing up every day ready to prepare and ready to go. Period. It’s a hard game.”

At least Boone is showing some of the passion that the fans—like the hosts of the podcast he regularly appears on—are looking for.

Yankees Fill Third Baseman Gap by Acquiring Ryan McMahon From Rockies

The New York Yankees have found their new third baseman. The team acquired Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies on Friday in a trade, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported. In return, the Rockies received two of the Yankees' pitching prospects, Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz, MLB's Mark Feinsand later reported.

This trade comes as a bit of a surprise as the Yankees appeared to be the frontrunner for acquiring Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez. Instead, McMahon will fill the gap at third base that the Yankees were desperate to plug.

New York's current third baseman Oswald Peraza has been disappointing for the team this season as he's averaging .147/.208/.237. His batting average and on base percentage are both the worst on the Yankees right now, while his slugging percentage is the second-worst. The Yankees are ready for a change at the position, so don't be surprised if Peraza gets dropped from the team soon after the McMahon trade.

McMahon is averaging .217/.314/.403 through 100 games played this season. He's racked up 76 hits, 42 runs and 16 home runs.

How Man Utd nearly signed Van Dijk, Haaland and a legendary Ballon d'Or winner

Manchester United have had some of the best players of all time come through their famous academy, however, the Red Devils have also signed some icons.

Sir Alex Ferguson won races to bring Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney to Old Trafford, with all three becoming Man Utd legends.

However, with those at Old Trafford always on the search for high-profile signings, they have missed out on signing some superstars over the years.

Sir Alex Ferguson named Arsenal star as "perfect" for Man Utd and tried to sign him

The Red Devils and the Gunners have had a fierce Premier League rivalry.

10 stars who almost signed for Man Utd

Virgil van Dijk

Now a Liverpool icon and arguably one of the best centre-backs of all time, Virgil van Dijk was wanted at Old Trafford before his move to Anfield.

Jose Mourinho wanted to make a big centre-back signing and shortlisted Van Dijk, Michael Keane and Victor Lindelof. Instead of splashing the cash on the Dutchman who was starring for Southampton, United spent more than £30m on Lindelof from Benfica.

Ronaldo

Back in 1996, Ronaldo was making his name at PSV Eindhoven at the age of 20, scoring goals for fun in the Netherlands.

He was a man in demand as a result, with Ferguson and co keen to bring him to Manchester. Ronaldo was even offered to United for £20m, however, that was seen as too much at the time, with Barcelona signing the Brazilian star instead. He went on to win the Ballon d’Or twice, in 1997 and 2002.

Ronaldinho

Another Brazilian icon who could quite easily have been a Man Utd player was Ronaldinho, with Ferguson on the search for David Beckham’s replacement in 2003.

Man Utd were looking to do a deal for Ronaldinho who was at PSG, however, after Barcelona missed out on signing Beckham, they dealt the Red Devils a blow by landing the Brazilian. United did sign an attacker that summer, though, with a certain Cristiano Ronaldo moving to Manchester.

Rivaldo

Continuing the trend of Brazil stars who Man Utd missed out on takes us to Rivaldo. The Red Devils had just won the treble in 1999 and Ferguson wanted to sign the forward from Barcelona.

Winning the Ballon d’Or that year, Rivaldo’s relationship with Barca manager Louis van Gaal was not great, but United just missed out on doing a deal.

Patrick Vieira

One of Man Utd’s greatest rivals in the Premier League was Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira, and United actually tried to sign the Frenchman from the Gunners on two occasions.

Ferguson believed Vieira wanted to move to Old Trafford in 2001 and 2003, and there was talk of a £22m transfer once Beckham left for Real Madrid. Instead, Vieira signed a new contract to stay with Arsene Wenger.

Eden Hazard

Chelsea legend Eden Hazard looked nailed on to sign for Man Utd in 2012 before a problem with his agent arose.

The Blues paid Lille £32m to sign the Belgian, but a deal with the Red Devils broke down after United refused to pay Hazard’s agent £6m to get the deal done.

Instead of Hazard, Man Utd signed Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund.

Cesc Fabregas

Involved in an altercation with Ferguson at Old Trafford, Cesc Fabregas could have worked under the Red Devils boss after he tried to sign him from Barcelona in 2003.

Man Utd then tried again in 2013 under David Moyes, however, they had two offers rejected by those at the Nou Camp, with Fabregas instead playing for Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League.

Zinedine Zidane

In 1996, Zinedine Zidane was on the move from Bordeaux, and Cantona urged Ferguson and Man Utd to bring him to Old Trafford.

Former United chairman Martin Edwards said that a move failed to get over the line as Ferguson thought Zidane was not what they needed at the time, with the Frenchman instead going on to star for Juventus and Real Madrid.

Erling Haaland

Now a Manchester City superstar, Erling Haaland could have quite easily have signed for the Red Devils during the 2019/20 winter transfer window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge at the time and knew Haaland from his time at Molde, however, despite talks over a move to Old Trafford, the Norwegian rejected Man Utd and instead signed for Borussia Dortmund.

Alan Shearer

The Premier League’s all-time record goalscorer, Alan Shearer actually snubbed a move to Manchester United on two occasions. The first came in 1992 when he joined Blackburn from Southampton, and the second came four years later when he joined Newcastle.

Ferguson was personally involved in a deal to sign Shearer in 1996 and looked on course to have won the race, before Shearer’s agent called the Man Utd boss and told him they had decided to join Newcastle.

Gareth Bale

One of the most decorated British players of all time after winning five Champions League titles with Real Madrid is Wales star Gareth Bale.

However, he could have signed for Man Utd instead of Tottenham back in 2007, with talk of a £10m transfer before his move to north London. Ferguson blamed the Saints and not Bale for a deal breaking down.

17-year-old Chelsea star is a "joy to watch" & just as exciting as Estevao

Chelsea haven’t always been known as a club willing to nurture their young talents. Rather, their past reputation saw them constantly loan out starlets to far-off outfits, far removed from first-team minutes at Stamford Bridge.

Just last season saw the Blues chuck out the likes of Armando Broja and Djorde Petrovic to sides such as Everton and RC Strasbourg on loan, with both players now no longer on the books of the Premier League giants, as their patience ran thin with their lack of senior chances back at their parent employers.

However, this campaign so far, the narrative seems to be noticeably changing under Enzo Maresca, with Chelsea’s last Champions League tie seeing a whole host of promising stars for the future in Estevao, Jamie Gittens, and Marc Guiu lead the line, as the youthful Blues convincingly put Ajax to the sword 5-1.

Even in the bread and butter of league action, the Italian has been unafraid to gamble on the next generation coming through, with his willingness to integrate youth players into the senior frame very much paying off against Nottingham Forest…

Chelsea's crop of rising stars

Josh Acheampong’s first-ever senior goal would get Chelsea up and running on their travels to Nottinghamshire, with this confidently taken header also signalling the beginning of the end for Ange Postecoglou at the Tricky Trees.

The 19-year-old defender has already matched the same number of Premier League appearances he made last season this campaign at four, with seven duels won against Forest, on top of just four of his 52 passes being misplaced, backing up previous claims made by his manager that he can be a “top player” down the line for his boyhood side.

With a second-half run-out also handed to him against Ajax, expect to see Acheampong start a lot more games moving forward, as he only grows more in confidence, having also been branded as “excellent” by journalist Ben Jacobs after his goalscoring moment against Forest.

He, of course, isn’t the only emerging youngster catching the eye in West London, though, with the aforementioned duo of Guiu and Gittens also standing out, alongside a hotly-tipped Estevao, who is already being lauded as “world-class” by scout Jacek Kulig, despite being just 18 years of age.

The ex-Palmeiras wonderkid hasn’t floundered under his intense spotlight, either, with two senior strikes already collected at Chelsea.

Yet, there is another starlet who looks to be as exciting as Estevao, now, despite very much being in the early days of his unfolding senior career.

The Chelsea teenager who's as exciting as Estevao

It will be intriguing to see if Maresca sticks with this youth-focused approach in the Champions League, the more the tense competition progresses, with this decision to play a very young side last time out – with an average age of just 22 years and 163 days – going down as a masterstroke.

Regardless of whether he continues to be bold with his selections or not, there certainly seems to be a bright future ahead for 17-year-old Reggie Walsh in West London, with the homegrown midfielder now going down in the Blues’ history books as their youngest ever Champions League player when coming on against Ajax.

He didn’t look out of his depth for the 24 minutes he was on the turf, either, with Walsh only misdirecting one of his 18 passes on the day, with two key passes tallied up from his cameo nearly unlocking the porous visitors even more.

Amazingly, this isn’t the first time that the 17-year-old has been trusted to perform on the European stage, with a 90-minute run-out even afforded to him last season in the Conference League.

He is yet to get up and running in the blue of Chelsea in the senior ranks, but goals and assists should come his way soon, you imagine, to rival Estevao, with the number 46 previously being lauded as a “joy to watch” in this capacity by one Blues content creator, when collecting six goals and two assists in the U18 picture from 20 outings.

While the revolving door of loans that once occurred at Stamford Bridge did halt some players and their development, a loan away from West London could do Walsh the world of good soon, with Estevao undoubtedly boosted by his senior success in Brazil.

Such a chance could come Walsh’s way in January, but until then, don’t be surprised to see he’s still being selected here and there by Maresca, alongside Acheampong and Estevao.

With a new professional contract having only just been penned, Walsh looks to just be at the very start of what will hopefully be a fruitful first-team journey at Stamford Bridge.

Blue Jays Manager Wants Shohei Ohtani to Return Two Things From Failed Recruitment

Hey Shohei Ohtani, John Schneider called and he wants his Blue Jays gear back.

One of the biggest what-ifs surrounding the 2025 World Series between the Dodgers and Blue Jays concerns Ohtani, namely, that he very nearly became a member of the Blue Jays during his foray into free agency two years ago. So naturally, Blue Jays manager John Schneider, on the eve of Game 1 of the World Series on Thursday, was asked how close he believes Toronto was to landing the two-way superstar, who had narrowed his preferred list of teams to the Dodgers and Blue Jays.

Schneider reflected on his club's failed pursuit of Ohtani, then cracked a joke about the stops the team pulled out in its hopes to woo the superstar.

"You never know," Schneider said. "I think when we met with him, he felt good about it. You felt good about the feedback he was giving about our organization and opportunity here. But you never really know what a player is feeling in free agency. There's a lot of things that have to line up for them personally, too. So, you can't really think about what-if. You think about the 26 that we have. He's a great player.

"I'll say it again—I hope he brought his hat, the Blue Jay hat that he took from us in our meeting—I hope he brought it back finally. And the jacket for Decoy [Ohtani's dog]. You know? It's like, give us our stuff back already."

How close were the Blue Jays to landing Ohtani?

Pretty, pretty close. Toronto, armed with one of the highest payrolls in the big leagues, was willing to go step-for-step with the Dodgers, another financially muscular organization, in a race that eventually ended with the then-largest contract in North American sports history.

Toronto reportedly pulled out all of the stops in its efforts to sign Ohtani, including a secret tour of every inch of the Blue Jays' complex in Dunedin, Fla., jerseys, workout gear and accessories tailored to Ohtani's preferences, and yes, even a jacket for his dog Decoy, a Kooikerhondje.

Decoy was infamously front-and-center in the Ohtani recruitment process when some theorized and speculated that his dog's name was a clue as to where he could be headed in free agency. While it turns out that that wasn't the case, it's just another piece of insight into the enormity of Ohtani's free agency.

And while the Blue Jays ultimately struck out, Schneider still likes how things played out.

"He's a great player," Schneider continued. "But that aside, I think that we have a great team and just an unbelievable cast of characters and players. I think things worked out the way they meant to work out."

Astros Prospect's Family, Minor-League Team Had Awesome Reaction to First MLB Homer

Have a debut, Zach Cole.

The Astros called up the outfield prospect Friday to help provide a spark to their offense, according to the . He did just that as he hit eighth and played left field in his first game with the team.

Cole wasted no time recording his first hit and home run as he took the first pitch he saw in the big leagues out of the park against the Braves. He turned on a 93-mph cutter up in the zone from Atlanta starter Hurston Waldrep and took it 423 feet over the right-field wall at Truist Park.

His family was in attendance sitting just beside Houston’s dugout and they couldn’t believe it. Pure bliss:

Cole spent most of his season in Double A Corpus Christi and his teammates went wild for the massive swing as they watched on TV from their locker room:

He was promoted to Triple A Sugar Land just last month and quickly impressed in his 15 games played with a slash line of .353/.459/.745 with five home runs and 16 RBIs. The hot start in his MLB debut didn’t end with the third-inning homer which put the Astros on the board. He ended the night 3-for-4 with four RBIs and the one long ball in an impeccable first showing.

He may just be the offensive spark the Astros needed as they sit with a half-game lead over the Mariners in the AL West with just 14 games left in their regular-season schedule.
