Ex-Man Utd defender is helping Arsenal's Premier League title charge claims Golden Glove frontrunner David Raya

David Raya has credited former Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze for Arsenal’s remarkable defensive form this season. The Argentine joined Mikel Arteta’s backroom staff in the summer and is said to have brought intensity and resilience to the Gunners’ back line, who have now kept seven consecutive clean sheets and sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

  • Arsenal's spectacular defensive record this season

Arsenal extended their winning run to 12 games in all competitions after beating Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor on Saturday. The result marked yet another clean sheet for Raya, who has now recorded 10 shutouts in 13 matches across competitions. Arteta’s side have conceded just three goals all season.

The Gunners’ defensive discipline has been central to their early-season dominance, combining organisation with aggression to suffocate opposition attacks. Arsenal’s victory over Burnley also strengthened their grip on top spot in the Premier League, keeping them six points clear of Manchester City and seven points ahead of defending champions Liverpool. Heinze’s arrival as assistant coach in the summer has reportedly added an edge to their defensive training sessions, with players embracing his high-intensity methods.

Raya praises Heinze for defensive solidity

Raya heaped praise on Heinze for instilling a fighting spirit throughout the team, crediting the Argentine’s influence on Arsenal’s clean sheet record. "He’s a guy, he’s a coach, where he wants us to fight – a lot of intensity," said Raya after Saturday’s win. "To win games, you have to defend very well, especially in this league. This is the toughest league in the world.

"You have to be very, very, very solid to be able to win games. Normally, the games are won by one goal. So, it’s really, really important to keep that asset from us, from everyone. Not just the back line, just every single player. So, it’s a lot of credit to him as well."

Raya also reminded his team-mates to stay grounded despite their excellent start. "We have to think game by game," he continued. "We have to think it’s very early in the season. We’ve played 10 [league] games in the season, so it’s a lot of football to be played.

"We are only just starting in November, so obviously it’s nice to be there [at the top of the league] and to have those points. But we have to focus on ourselves, focus game by game and in the present.

"It’s incredible, not just the defence, I think it’s a collective achievement, if you want to put it that way. It starts from the striker, finishing with the goalkeeper. So, it’s just incredible to have that work rate from everyone, trying to shut teams down and not concede that many chances, not concede anything. And that’s just credit to everyone. So, it’s incredible to have that achievement."

Heinze: A former Red Devil becomes a Gunner

Heinze, a former Manchester United defender, joined Arsenal’s coaching team in the summer and has made a noticeable impact. The Argentine played for the Red Devils between 2004 and 2007 after joining from Paris Saint-Germain, making 83 appearances in all competitions and scoring four goals before moving to Real Madrid. Known for his fierce style and leadership, Heinze’s influence appears to have translated seamlessly into coaching under Arteta, who he played with at PSG.

  • Arsenal fighting for first PL title in over two decades

Arsenal’s next assignment comes in the Champions League, where they travel to face Slavia Prague looking to maintain their flawless start in that competition. A win would not only secure qualification from the league stage but further reinforce their growing reputation as Europe’s most in-form team. Domestically, the Gunners will then prepare for a testing run of November fixtures that includes meetings with London rivals Tottenham and Chelsea, as they continue their pursuit of a first league title in over two decades.

For Raya, the goal will be to maintain his Golden Glove momentum, while Heinze’s challenge will be to ensure the team’s defensive structure remains consistent through the winter schedule.

Seifert, bowlers dominate South Africa in dress rehearsal for final

After New Zealand’s bowlers restricted South Africa to their lowest total of the series, Seifert’s half-century made it a one-sided contest

New Zealand will take the advantage into the tri-series final after beating South Africa for the second time in two meetings in the group stage. The two sides will meet again on Saturday, and New Zealand will have one more opportunity to fine-tune when they play Zimbabwe on Thursday. Zimbabwe have already been eliminated. In a competition where the chasing team have won four out of the five games so far (including this one), New Zealand played the situation to perfection. On a dry Harare surface, they restricted South Africa to their lowest total of the series and then chased it down inside 16 overs with seven wickets in hand. They made batting look relatively easy with an opening stand of 51, the highest powerplay score of the series, 55 for 1, and had the only half-century of the match courtesy of Tim Seifert.Contrastingly, South Africa struggled to find fluidity or string together partnerships. Their highest was a sixth-wicket stand of 30 off 16 balls between Reeza Hendricks and George Linde, who were also the only two batters to have individual scores over 20. None of their bowlers could keep New Zealand quiet and Gerald Coetzee was particularly expensive. His three overs cost 37 runs while Zakary Foulkes and Adam Milne gave away just 33 runs in seven overs.New Zealand’s early squeezeUnder cloudy skies, New Zealand made run-scoring particularly difficult and found the right lengths straight away. Jacob Duffy opened the bowling and set the tone with back-of-good-length balls and a hint of extra bounce. He would not have been too unhappy when the first runs came off the edge as Rassie van der Dussen threw his hands at one and earned a streaky boundary. Foulkes followed up with a similar strategy and Milne reaped the rewards from the early pressure when van der Dussen made room to try and find the boundary but exposed his stumps and was bowled. South Africa managed just 17 runs off the first five overs, off seven scoring shots.Tim Seifert led New Zealand’s chase•Zimbabwe CricketSouth Africa’s slew of soft dismissalsAt 52 for 2 and approaching the halfway mark, South Africa needed quick runs and made several reckless attempts to get them. Dewald Brevis tried to upper-cut Will O’Rourke but only managed to give Seifert a simple catch. In the next over, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, moved down to No. 5 for this match, sent a Mitchell Santner ball that was zoning in on the pads straight to Duffy at short fine when he could have hit it anywhere on the leg side. While those two mistakes could be put down to inexperience, Hendricks, who was holding the innings together on 41, will be livid with the shot he played off the penultimate ball of the 17th over. Duffy offered him width and Hendricks tried to smash it over the covers but only got it as far as Michael Bracewell in the ring. South Africa were 109 for 6 at that stage but had Senuran Muthusamy, who can bat as high as No. 4, in hand. He was deceived by a change-up from Milne and sent a slower ball straight to extra cover as South Africa’s innings stuttered at the death. They scored 30 runs off the last four overs and lost three wickets.South Africa’s wayward startThe fielding team can ill-afford mistakes when defending a small total but South Africa had three in the first over, which made things even more difficult for them. Linde’s first ball went wide down the leg side, his second did the same thing and snuck past Pretorius behind the stumps to go for four, which meant New Zealand had six runs on the board before a legitimate ball was bowled. Three deliveries late, Linde floated one up, Seifert, who had yet to score a run, went inside-out and tried to clear long-off but didn’t quite get enough on it. Andile Simelane ran around to attempt a catch. He got both hands to the ball but could not keep it under control and it popped out as he fell to the floor. Seifert collected his first three runs and went on to score his 11th T20I half-century.Seifert’s charmed life After he was dropped on 0, Seifert could have been bowled when he shuffled across his stumps to try and lap Coetzee but missed and then could have been caught when he top-edged Coetzee on the leg side but the ball fell safely over both Rubin Hermann and Linde who converged from midwicket and mid-on, respectively. Seifert went on to hit Coetzee for back-to-back boundaries and seemed to settle. Just as things seemed to become easier for him, he survived a caught-and-bowled chance off Linde, who could not snatch a return chance. Seifert wrested back control with the shot that brought up his fifty, a massive six off Muthusamy over long-on, off the 38th ball he faced. He hit another off Nqaba Peter and put the result beyond doubt.

Fewer touches than Pickford: 4/10 Everton dud was saved by Grealish & Ndiaye

Everton secured their third Premier League win of the campaign this afternoon with a comeback victory over Crystal Palace at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees went a goal down in the first half after Daniel Munoz put the visitors ahead, but a second-half fightback from David Moyes’ men secured a sensational victory.

Iliman Ndiaye slotted home a penalty with less than 15 minutes remaining, before Jack Grealish bundled home in stoppage time to secure all three points.

The result takes the side just a couple of points outside the top four of the Premier League, with a real buzz emerging around Merseyside given the impressive displays in recent weeks.

There’s no denying that multiple players played a pivotal role in the triumph over the Eagles, with their showings ending their superb 19-game unbeaten record.

Ndiaye & Grealish’s performances against Palace

As previously mentioned, Ndiaye and Grealish were the players who managed to find the back of the net for Everton – subsequently allowing the side to claim a needed victory.

The Senegalese international has made himself a fan-favourite over the last 12 months since his move, with his showing against the Eagles another one he should be proud of.

Alongside his goal, he created two chances for his teammates, whilst also completing four passes into the final third – further showcasing his creative nouse in attacking areas.

He wasn’t alone in impressing, with Grealish finally netting his first goal for the Toffees after numerous assists following his loan move from Manchester City this summer.

The Englishman completed two dribbles – the most of any player on the pitch – whilst also being fouled four times, with the opposition often unable to get near the 30-year-old.

Such performances showcase how impressive Moyes’ side were to complete the turnaround, but one player failed to take advantage of the chance handed his way this afternoon.

The Everton player who was saved by Ndiaye and Grealish

Despite the impressive showings of the aforementioned duo, numerous Everton players failed to make a huge impression on the contest against Oliver Glasner’s men.

Tyler Dibling was handed his first Premier League start for the Toffees today, but he was unable to prove to the fanbase why the hierarchy forked out £40m for his signature this summer.

The youngster only managed to complete a total of six passes against the Eagles, whilst also completing none of the three dribbles he attempted – highlighting his lack of impact in attacking areas.

However, the big-money addition wasn’t alone in failing to impress, with striker Thierno Barry also struggling to make the most of a rare start at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Like Dibling, the 22-year-old cost a pretty penny this summer, costing a fee in the region of £27m after starring for Villarreal in LaLiga during the 2024/25 campaign.

Today was just his second league start since his transfer, but it appears like the wrong call from Moyes, especially given his lack of impact in Merseyside.

He only featured for the first half before being replaced by Beto at the break, but his withdrawal was understandable after achieving a total of just 18 touches.

His subsequent tally was lower than goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, with the shot-stopper achieving a total of 48 – further showcasing the striker’s lack of impact.

Barry also only managed to register four passes at a completion rate of just 50%, whilst also missing a big chance in the process – making today an afternoon to forget for the talisman.

As a result of his showing, Barry was handed a measly 4/10 match rating by journalist Jack Dawson, topping off what was a dismal outing for the forward.

As a result, Moyes desperately needs to drop the Frenchman after the international break in order to allow Beto to reclaim his starting role at the top end of the pitch.

There’s no denying that Ndiaye and Grealish saved the forward amid his poor showing, with the duo undoubtedly being the shining lights in the sensational victory.

Gio Reyna, Ricardo Pepi headline returners as Christian Pulisic is left out of Mauricio Pochettino's USMNT squad for November friendlies vs Paraguay, Uruguay

Gio Reyna, Joe Scally and Ricardo Pepi are back in the U.S. men's national team squad for upcoming friendlies against Paraguay and Uruguay. Mauricio Pochettino on Thursday announced his roster for the final two friendlies of 2025, and it doesn't include Christian Pulisic, who headlines a list of USMNT stars who have been dealing with injuries.

Getty ImagesSome major returns

Pochettino's 25-man squad for the November matches features 11 players that were not in the October camp, headlined by the returns of Reyna, Scally and Pepi. Reyna and Scally are back in the team for the first time since the Nations League collapse in March, while Pepi and Auston Trusty return to the USMNT squad for the first time since last November – Pochettino's second camp after taking over the team.

Reyna's return comes on the heels of a move to Borussia Monchengladbach, where he reunited with longtime friend and former NYCFC youth team teammate Scally in the Bundesliga. Pepi, meanwhile, is back from injury and scoring again for PSV, having recently netted in three of his last four games, including Champions League matches against Napoli and Olympiacos.

Trusty rejoins a central defense pool that includes Mark McKenzie, Tim Ream and Miles Robinson following the team's recent switch to a three-centerback system.

There are 11 MLS players, overall, on the roster, and nine are still active in the playoffs.

Sebastian Berhalter and the Vancouver Whitecaps have already advanced to the Western Conference semifinals, while Ream (Charlotte FC), Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders), Max Arfsten, Patrick Schulte and Sean Zawadzki (Columbus Crew), Roman Celentano and Miles Robinson (FC Cincinnati) and Matt Freese (New York City FC) will all play decisive Game 3 matches this weekend.

New England Revolution goalkeeper and former USMNT starter Matt Turner was not called-in for this camp.

AdvertisementAFPInjury absences

The team has been hit by something of an injury crisis in recent weeks, leading to several notable absences. Pulisic is chief among them, as a hamstring injury sustained in last month's friendly against Australia kept him out of action for AC Milan and, ultimately now, the USMNT. Interestingly, Pulisic has reportedly resumed training and is expected to return to Milan’s squad for Saturday’s Serie A trip to Parma.

Star attacker Tim Weah is also out, having recently sustained an injury with Marseille, while Cameron Carter-Vickers will be on the shelf for a several months due to an Achilles issue.

Pochettino opted to leave out several players who have either recently returned or are nearing a return. Those players include Malik Tillman and Johnny Cardoso, while Antonee Robinson, who has battled injury issues for most of 2025, is also out.

Also missing are regulars Chris Richards and Weston McKennie, who were not named to the squad.

Getty ImagesWhat Pochettino said

"As we continue to develop our squad and build on the culture we have created, this is another great opportunity for the players selected for this roster to prove they deserve to be on the final list for the World Cup,” Pochettino said. “It's important that they come into this camp prepared to show their qualities on the field and their commitment to being a good teammate. We will keep working on the competitive details in training and have the opportunity to challenge ourselves against two high-quality opponents from South America.”

Ahead of next year's home World Cup, Pochettino is tasked with helping drive the growth of the sport in the U.S., telling BBC Sport this week that "the motivation is massive. Sometimes you feel that people don't understand too much.

"You find some coaches that say, 'Oh you know, you need to know the culture of the American player.' I say 'No, I know the most important thing is the culture of football and soccer. We need to translate the culture of football to the American player.' I think after one year we are making great progress.

"We are building with people that the language of football is only one, and it doesn't care if you are American, Brazilian or English. Our football is to compete in the way that you need to compete, if you want to win."

West Indies batting flops to give Australia the advantage after 15-wicket day

West Indies’ pace bowlers surged under lights on the second day at Sabina Park as the Test moved at a breakneck speed, with Australia stumbling to 99 for 6 amid a torrid working over in some of the toughest conditions imaginable.Sam Konstas’ miserable series ended with a duck, leaving his Test prospects for the Ashes in jeopardy. Cameron Green, on the other hand, played outstandingly for an innings worth far more than the 42 on the scoreboard, although he could have been run out on 14. By the close of another hectic day, which saw 15 wickets fall, Australia held a lead of 181 which was already considerable in the conditions, but West Indies had given themselves a glimmer.Related

  • Konstas will play for Australia again, but will he play Ashes?

Earlier, West Indies had been dismantled for 143, with Australia’s bowling sharing the success. Scott Boland, who replaced Nathan Lyon in the XI, finished with three wickets. Australia took a first-innings lead of 82, but it also meant they started their second innings at the beginning of the final session, as the lights took full hold. The passage of play when West Indies took the new ball was electrifying. Konstas wasn’t able to get off the mark as he jabbed at a short-of-a-length delivery from Shamar Joseph and was caught in the gully. It left Konstas, who had been billed as the future of the top order, with 50 runs in the series at 8.33.Usman Khawaja managed to take his balls-faced tally in the series to over 300 – a not-inconsiderable achievement given the conditions – but inside-edged a big drive against Shamar Joseph into his stumps, making it all six dismissals for the series from around the wicket.

Then, Alzarri Joseph turned up the throttle against Steven Smith with a spell where he touched 147kph and produced the fastest over by a West Indies bowler in the series. He had only been able to bowl seven overs in the first innings due to back problems but was cleared after scans in hospital.Smith was dropped on 1, a low chance to Justin Greaves at second slip, and appeared to have trouble sighting the ball, which is a challenge he has spoken about in day-night Tests. With Alzarri Joseph’s 12th delivery to Smith, he found the inside edge with a fuller delivery, pinning Smith back in the crease.West Indies spurned a golden chance to remove Green when he and Travis Head were caught ball-watching over a single. The pair resisted briefly, but it couldn’t last for much longer as Head sent a low catch to second slip against Greaves.Beau Webster was defeated by late movement from Alzarri Joseph, on a virtually unplayable delivery, and Alex Carey edged a wild drive to slip two balls after being clanged on the helmet by a bouncer that necessitated repair work on it. Carey’s stroke was one of a batter not backing their chances of hanging around.Scott Boland, who replaced Nathan Lyon in the XI, finished with three wickets•AFP/Getty Images

As with the opening day, the game moved at a much more sedate pace for the first two hours. West Indies had fought hard during the morning session, which took on a similar pattern to Australia’s first innings, where the scoring rate was low. They were 73 for 3 at the interval and later 124 for 5, before tumbling in a heap thanks to a mixture of good deliveries and poor batting.Brandon King, who had opened after injuries to John Campbell and Mikyle Louis on the first day, had been solid during the opening exchanges before falling to a bail-trimming lbw against Josh Hazlewood. There was a brief moment of controversy when Campbell was nearly run out by Pat Cummins’ under-arm flick from mid-on. Nitin Menon didn’t call for the TV umpire and said Australia hadn’t appealed. Replays showed Campbell’s bat bounced but had been ground fractionally over the line beforehand. There was a heated conversation between Cummins and Menon in the aftermath.Pat Cummins celebrates dismissing Roston Chase•AFP/Getty Images

Roston Chase had battled through 70 balls when he edged a lifter from Cummins to first slip as he tried to drop the bat and gloves out of the line.Campbell, meanwhile, had shaped up well, showing good judgement with tip and runs while latching onto anything slightly lose, especially a crunching cover drive against Hazlewood. However, a moment of misjudgment ended his stay when he shouldered arms to Boland.Louis, who hurt his knee on the opening day, played the worst shot from the top order – a swipe across the line – to leave West Indies 95 for 5.But Australia were not blemish free. Carey missed two chances – the first when he dived across in front of first slip for an edge off Greaves, and then a low inside edge from Shai Hope. However, Hope fell on the next ball, when a delivery nipped sharply from Boland and scooted past the inside edge. From there, the innings – which also included Greaves being run out coming back for a third, beaten by Konstas’ excellent throw from the deep – subsided till they were all out.

Kelly, Boyce provide Blaze base for solid victory

Kathryn Bryce spearheads bowling as Freeborn-Wraith stand falls short of rescuing Warwickshire

A rain-hit 50-overs match on a club ground might bear little resemblance to a T20 at the Kia Oval but The Blaze will draw some confidence from a 47-run victory over Warwickshire Women in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup as a dress rehearsal of sorts for Sunday’s Vitality Blast semi-final.After Marie Kelly’s List A career-best 66 and opening partner Georgia Boyce’s 46 had laid the foundations for a total of 218 for 6 after opting to bat first in a match reduced to 39 overs-a-side, The Blaze dismissed Warwickshire for 171, despite a determined effort by Abbey Freeborn (56 off 73 balls) and Nat Wraith (75 off 71) to give the visitors a chance after being reduced to 13 for 4.Kathryn Bryce (3-18), Georgia Elwiss (3-26) and Grace Ballinger (3-26) shared the bowling honours for The Blaze, for whom Sarah Bryce had made an unbeaten 32, with two wickets each for Warwickshire’s Georgia Davis and Amu Surenkumar.Winning the toss and electing to bat in a match reduced to 39 overs per side after morning rain at the Lindum Sports Club Ground in Lincoln, The Blaze established a strong foundation as Kelly and Boyce shared an opening stand of 106, Kelly hitting eight fours and a six.Kelly, making her first List A appearance of the season, pulled Surenkumar for her maximum early in the innings, generally driving and pulling strongly. She found the boundary three times in the same over off Davis, completing a 47-ball half-century against her former county when she swept Millie Taylor for her seventh four.Taylor, making her List A debut for Warwickshire and unique in the English county women’s game as a left-arm wrist spinner, broke the stand when she turned one past Kelly’s bat for a stumping. Boyce, back with The Blaze after playing for Yorkshire in the Women’s Vitality Blast, was in sight of a fifty of her own when she miscued to mid-off.Kathryn Bryce – reprieved when given out leg before on 13 on the grounds of being distracted by bowler Hannah Baker’s cap dropping out of her pocket – added another 10 before she was stumped.Elwiss, Heather Graham and Ella Claridge all fell cheaply, but Sarah Bryce (32 off 19) and Sarah Glenn added 37 off the last 18 balls of the innings – 26 at the expense of England seamer Issy Wong.Needing to chase at 5.6 an over, Warwickshire suffered a disastrous start, slumping to 13 for four inside five overs. After Bethan Ellis had been caught at square leg off the next, Ballinger took wickets with the last ball of her second over and the first of her third as Lucy Higham took a fine catch at backward point to remove Davina Perrin and Sarah Bryce an easy one as Sterre Kalis skied a top edge, Kathryn Bryce holding a return catch as Surenkumar departed. An inswinging delivery from Bryce accounted for Katie George, leaving Warwickshire 28 for 5 after 10 overs.Freeborn and Wraith rebuilt well, the former clocking up her third half-century off 60 balls, Wraith her second of the campaign off 50, with three boundaries each and some enterprising running between the stumps, their partnership passing 100 in the 28th over.Yet once the breakthrough came, breaking the stand at 112, the home side made it count. Freeborn, who had survived a sharp caught-and-bowled chance to Kirstie Gordon on 52, fell shortly afterwards, leg before attempting to ramp Elwiss. Wong then came and went quickly, top edging Elwiss into the off side, before catcher Glenn combined with Elwiss again to run out Taylor off the next ball.Ballinger returned to have Davis caught on the legside boundary before Wraith departed as the last wicket to fall, caught at wide mid-off off Elwiss.

Yankees Fan Ejected After Trying to Pry Fly Ball Out of Mookie Betts's Glove

A New York Yankees fan who likely paid thousands of dollars for a front-row seat at Game 4 of the World Series has been ushered out of the ballpark after just three outs.

In the bottom of the first inning, Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres hit a foul ball down the right-field line. Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts chased it down and caught it at the wall in foul territory.

After Betts caught the ball, a fan in the front row grabbed his glove with two hands and ripped the ball out of his possession. Fan interference was called, Torres was ruled out, and that fan was quickly ushered out of Yankee Stadium.

That will go down as one of the strangest player-fan moments in World Series history.

The New York faithful haven't had much to cheer for in the 2024 World Series, as Los Angeles won the first three games and took a 2–0 lead in Game 4 on Freddie Freeman's first-inning home run.

MLB Divisional Round Full Schedule: Key Dates & Times

The 2024 MLB playoffs are in full swing as the wild card round comes to a close. It's shaping up to be a great postseason with underdog stories like the Detroit Tigers dominating in the opening games. But titans await in the second round, like the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers, who both boast MVP candidates on their rosters.

There is nothing like October baseball and the going gets good when the Divisional Round starts. The series shifts from best-of-three to best-of-five so both sides get to settle in and get to know each other. Momentum will swing. Epic moments will be had. It's going to be a lot of fun.

With most of the matchups set, it feels like a good time to lay out what the Divisional Round will look like over the next week and change.
