McDermott, Peirson rescue draw after Meredith's burst rocks Queensland

The home side were in danger of defeat midway through the final day but an unbroken sixth-wicket stand came to their aid

AAP18-Nov-2024Queensland held on for a draw on the final day of their Sheffield Shield match against a Tasmania side that dominated from the outset. The hosts were in dire straits on Monday’s final day at Allan Border Field until Ben McDermott and wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson combined for an unbroken 99-run stand for the sixth wicket. The match was called a draw with an hour to play with Queensland 225 for 5 in their second innings, a lead of 55. Queensland have not won any of their past six games in Brisbane, a run comprising four losses and two draws.Related

Tasmania posted 461 in the first innings but the weather conspired to cruel their hopes of a first win of the season after most of day two was lost to rain.Queensland resumed at 274 for 7 and immediately lost day-three centurion Matthew Renshaw who added just one to his overnight tally.Pace bowlers Riley Meredith and Lawrence Neil-Smith, both with three wickets in the innings, cleaned up the tail and the hosts were quickly bundled out 20 runs short of avoiding the follow on for 291. Tasmania skipper Jordan Silk had no hesitation sending Queensland back in.Mitchell Owen picked up Renshaw and Bryce Street before lunch to brilliant diving catches by first slip Beau Webster and wicketkeeper Jake Doran.Meredith was the destroyer in the hour after the interval and took three wickets to have Queensland teetering at 126 for 5, still 44 runs shy of making the visitors bat again, before McDermott and Pearson knuckled down to ensure there was no embarrassing loss.Tasmania opener Jake Weatherald was named man of the match for his superb 186.Queensland captain Mitchell Swepson conceded Tasmania had dominated the game.”We play Shield cricket to win and unfortunately we haven”t been able to get into positions to win,” he told AAP. “Tassie were driving the game from the first day when we weren’t quite on with the ball. We were lucky to get away with a draw here.”A day-night clash with top of the table Victoria starts on Sunday at the Gabba. Queensland must win to get their season moving in the right direction.”Where we are on the table, we need a few wins and we have great belief in this group,” Swepson said. “The Gabba has been a fortress for us and is somewhere we think we can play an aggressive brand of cricket. The pink ball adds a different element and you’d like to think there would be a result at the Gabba where the wicket is pretty spicy for Shield games.”Tasmania will play NSW away on Sunday as they also look for an elusive first victory of the summer.

Australia strike twice before rain saves Sri Lanka from further damage

Australia will now have more work to do then they would have anticipated in the last two days

Tristan Lavalette31-Jan-2025Australia’s menacing attack was left frustrated after the final two sessions of day three were washed out as Sri Lanka had respite from a Galle surface starting to play tricks. The day started amid sunny conditions and 27 overs were bowled before rain cascaded on the ground out of nowhere just before lunch. There was no further play for the remainder of the day, with stumps called more than two hours ahead of schedule. In response to Australia’s massive first-innings of 654 for 6 declared, Sri Lanka were 136 for 5 at stumps with Dinesh Chandimal playing a lone hand so far with an attractive 63 not out. Kusal Mendis is unbeaten on 10.Australia are still in the box seat to claim victory in the first Test after dominating the opening seven sessions of the match. But the wet weather has added intrigue and given Sri Lanka hope of escaping with a draw. Rain is forecast for Saturday, but clear weather is expected on the fifth day.The pitch had been mostly benign over the opening two days with sharp turn negated by the slowness of the surface. But it did start showing signs of wear in the morning session with several cracks notable and the ball occasionally exploded off the surface. After such a dismal performance by the top-order, where they lost three wickets within 10 overs late on day two, Sri Lanka resumed on 44 for 3 and still 410 runs away from the follow-on.Their hopes of chiselling into that target rested on Chandimal and Kamindu Mendis, who entered with an average of 74 from 10 Tests since debuting against Australia on the ground in 2022. In that match, Chandimal scored 206 not out in a big victory for Sri Lanka. They were confronted by the old guard of left-arm quick Mitchell Starc and offspinner Nathan Lyon starting in tandem having each claimed a wicket on the previous evening. Starc, attired in long sleeves, found some swing and also helped deepen the emerging footmarks.Chandimal was pinned down initially by Lyon. But perhaps having closely studied Australia’s first-innings playbook, Chandimal decided to go on the attack against Lyon who loomed as Australia’s talisman having had little to do in the pace-dominated home series against India.A fascinating battle emerged as Lyon bowled from around the wicket aiming at the developing footmarks. Chandimal was undaunted as he unfurled the sweep to good effect and clubbed Lyon to the boundary. He enjoyed luck on the next delivery when he edged past stand-in skipper Steven Smith’s outstretched left hand at first slip in the type of tough chance he has often snaffled in his career.A stubborn Dinesh Chandimal kept Australian bowlers at bay•AFP via Getty ImagesChandimal capped the most productive over of the innings when he reverse swept Lyon to the boundary. But Sri Lanka’s solid start was rocked when Kamindu fell in tame fashion on 15 when he was strangled down the leg side by Starc as Sri Lanka fell to 67 for 4.Chandimal remained unruffled despite copping a blow in the midriff by a shorter delivery from Starc. He continued to defy Lyon by backing his attacking instincts. Much like Australia’s batters on the opening two days, Chandimal danced down the wicket to good effect to club Lyon over cover.Chandimal had a productive partnership with skipper Dhananjaya de Silva to underline there were still plenty of runs on offer on this surface. But, once again, Sri Lanka were derailed by recklessness when de Silva was stumped by a mile after he ran down at left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann and missed a short and wide delivery.Having triggered Sri Lanka’s woes by dismissing opener Oshada Fernando, Kuhnemann continued his strong return in his first Test match since the India tour in early 2023.Chandimal reached his half-century off 91 balls before Sri Lanka, not for the first time in this match, were relieved by the sight of rain.

Nottingham Forest could hire "legend" Nuno replacement after Marinakis advice

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo is now facing an uncertain future at the City Ground, amid tension with maverick owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Nuno is a hugely popular figure among the Forest fanbase after guiding them back to a place in European football, with Crystal Palace’s demotion to the Conference League handing them a place in the Europa League.

Forest were in and around the top four all season long in 2024/2025, which nobody expected at the start of last term, and it is testament to the excellent job Nuno has done with very limited depth compared to his Premier League counterparts.

Losing the Portuguese would be a bitter one to take for Forest supporters, but it is a very realistic possibility, as Nuno cast doubt on his own future in a press conference this week – admitting that relations with Marinakis have soured.

These comments are believed to have escalated tension behind-the-scenes, especially since they came 48 hours before a heated clash with Palace after Forest took their place in the Europa (The Guardian).

While Forest have enjoyed a stellar last fortnight in the transfer market, sealing a plethora of deals with the latest one being Douglas Luiz from Juventus, Nuno’s potential exit is a worrying scenario amidst what is a vital campaign.

Nottingham Forest could replace Nuno with Ange Postecoglou

If Nuno were to depart, reliable media sources claim another ex-Tottenham boss in Ange Postecoglou would be a leading candidate for the job.

This is backed up by journalist Graeme Bailey, who also tells TBR Football that Forest could hire Postecoglou off the back of some key advice to Marinakis from the Greek tycoon’s family.

Postecoglou guided Spurs to their first major trophy in 17 years with their Europa League triumph in May. However, the Australian, who’s won at least one piece of silverware at nearly every club he’s been at, also watched on as the Lilywhites slumped to a 17th-placed finish in the Premier League last term.

It is worth noting, though, that his Tottenham squad held the 59-year-old in very high esteem, and he was very popular at Hotspur Way, with Son Heung-min calling him a club “legend”.

Liverpool surge into race for Spurs and Man Utd target likened to "best in the world"

Liverpool are believed to be battling two of their rivals for the signing of an influential Premier League player in the summer transfer window.

Slot explains subs after dramatic Liverpool win

The Reds started their title defence with a late 4-2 win at home to Bournemouth on Friday evening, but they weren’t always entirely convincing at Anfield. Arne Slot’s substitutions didn’t work too well, allowing the Cherries to score twice and make it 2-2, but Liverpool’s head coach has now explained his reasoning behind the changes.

“Jeremie felt his hamstring a little bit so that’s a risk – especially if the other full-back Conor Bradley is already out with an injury. With Joe Gomez only training twice, I didn’t feel he could already play half [an hour] in this intensity, so I started off with Wata [Endo] in that position, knowing that I could always bring Joe maybe later on for 10, 15, 20 minutes.

“Milos Kerkez plays every duel as if his life depends on it, which is a great quality, but if you play against such a good winger like [Antoine] Semenyo when you’re already on one yellow card, it’s a risk – especially knowing that we have [Andy] Robertson as well, so that’s explained in that sense.

“Hugo Ekitike came later in pre-season, comes from a good team but I don’t think you can compare that with Liverpool and you can’t compare the league. So for him to already be able to play 70 is a big, big, big bonus for us – but 90 is a risk.

“The other substitution was Macca, who has been out for two, two-and-a-half months [and] only in training for two-and-a-half weeks, so not able to play 90 yet. And the other one was Florian in the end, that was simply because I wanted to bring a No.9 in because we were 2-2.”

It was clear that some new signings are being managed carefully by Slot but perhaps there is a need for more defensive depth at Anfield…

Liverpool battling to sign Premier League captain

According to The Daily Mail, Liverpool are “targeting a move” for Brentford captain Nathan Collins, potentially seeing him as an alternative to Crystal Palace ace Marc Guehi. The 24-year-old is also wanted by Manchester United and Tottenham, with interest in him “surging” as the transfer window nears its conclusion.

Nathan Collins in action for Ireland.

Collins has been linked with a move to Liverpool already this summer, with the Reds reportedly entering the race for him, and he could be a strong squad addition for Slot.

He is now a proven Premier League player, appearing 116 times in the competition and at 24, he is already a top-flight captain. Meanwhile, Thomas Frank has hailed his concentration levels, comparing that attribute to something that the “best players in the world” have in their armoury.

Nottingham Forest in active talks to sign £26m midfielder alongside McAtee

Nottingham Forest are now in active talks to sign an “exceptional” midfielder alongside Manchester City’s James McAtee, according to a report.

Forest closing in on deal for McAtee

It was recently revealed that Forest are now closing in on McAtee, having struck an agreement on personal terms, and Fabrizio Romano has since reported that a deal could be wrapped up in the very near future.

“Nottingham Forest are closing in on James McAtee deal with Manchester City! Agreement at the final stages for fee in excess of £20m, NFFC confident to get it done… here we go, expected soon.”

The Man City ace usually plays in an advanced midfield role, so it will be interesting to see where he slots into Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, given that Morgan Gibbs-White agreed to extend his stay at the City Ground earlier this summer.

However, the Tricky Trees still remain keen on strengthening their options in the engine room, having made no new additions to their midfield up to this point, and they have now set their sights on a player from one of Europe’s biggest clubs…

Indeed, according to a report from The Athletic, Nottingham Forest are now in active, club-to-club talks over a deal for AC Milan’s Yunus Musah, and if those negotiations are successful, personal terms are expected to be a formality.

Perfect for Gibbs-White: Forest planning bid to sign £22m star after McAtee

As Nottingham Forest look to bolster their squad ahead of a European campaign, they’re plotting a move to sign an “exciting” midfielder valued at £22m

There is a feeling that Milan could be willing to sanction a departure, too, with sporting director Igli Tare saying: “I consider Musah an excellent player, but we are looking for profiles with characteristics that fit the project we have with coach Allegri.

“We are seeking deep-lying midfielders for a three-man midfield. Musah doesn’t have these characteristics.”

Fellow Serie A midfielder, Juventus’ Douglas Luiz, also remains an option for Forest, with Nuno keen to bring in a midfielder after selling Lewis O’Brien and Danilo already this summer.

"Exceptional" Musah could excel at the City Ground

A deal for the American would not break the bank, with a transfer fee of around £26m previously being touted, and there are plenty of indications that he could be capable of kicking on at the City Ground.

The Milan ace is still young at 22-years-old, but he has already made 188 appearances at first-team level across spells with his current club and Valencia, while also collecting 47 caps for his national side.

During that time, the USA international has displayed his versatility, regularly featuring in central midfield and on both wings, and his dribbling ability could make him an exciting wide option for Nuno.

He'd revive Fernandes: Man Utd chasing the "best English CM since Scholes"

Manchester United are looking to spark a resurgence this year, but the first couple of fixtures since the off-season have issued a reminder that this squad has a long way to go before it gets to where they need to be.

Ruben Amorim has recently spoken of his belief that the Red Devils are closer to their goals this season, but then you would hope that this is so, for United finished 15th in the Premier League last season and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, now excluded from European competition.

Fans would be understood for wanting a few more additions before the close of the transfer window, United having claimed one point from their opening two league fixtures.

The frontline has been reshaped, and efforts for Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens continue, yet Amorim remains intent on signing a central midfielder to establish the balance he needs for his tactical engine to start purring.

Man United searching for a midfielder

Much had been put into the bid for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba this month, but the Seagulls have barred the Cameroonian’s exit, and so INEOS have shelved their interest for the time being.

Brighton & Hove Albion's CarlosBalebain action with Manchester City's Mateo Kovacic

But a deal for another midfielder could yet be struck before the end of the window, with GIVEMESPORT revealing that Kobbie Mainoo could leave Old Trafford, and a replacement brought in.

It’s an ambitious one, but that player could be Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, with The Athletic’s Mark Critchley and Laurie Whitwell confirming on Tuesday United’s interest in the England international.

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton

It seems unlikely that the Eagles would sanction their prized midfielder’s exit at this late stage, but it’s encouraging to note that Man United’s interest is genuine, though they would have to cough up something in the ballpark of £100m, a fee that would eclipse the club’s transfer record.

What Adam Wharton would bring to Man United

Described as “the best deep-lying English midfielder since Scholes” by a CONCACAF-certified coach, need we really say anymore?

Wharton, 21, has only been at Crystal Palace since January 2024, joining from Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, but already he has showcased a considerable degree of quality in Oliver Glasner’s trophy-winning system, and England’s top outfits have taken note.

At the Theatre of Dreams, Wharton would occupy a role currently being filled by Bruno Fernandes, who has moved into a deeper berth than he has principally played across his four-and-a-half years as a Red Devil.

Fernandes, 30, has been the subject of transfer speculation brewing from the Saudi Pro League this summer, but he issued an emphatic response, rejecting the concerted approach from Al Hilal.

Bruno Fernandes

It’s a good thing too. Not only did the Portugal international score 19 goals and supply 19 assists across all competitions for Man United last season, but he also inspired and roused the rabble as they flattered to deceive.

His playmaking knows no bounds, and that’s why signing Wharton could work so well for the overall fluency of Amorim’s unit, allowing Fernandes to shift back into a more advanced role, facilitated by Wharton’s presence.

Hailed as a “generational talent” by journalist Matthew Stanger, Wharton’s 2024/25 campaign was affected by injury, limiting him to just 16 Premier League starts, but he still ranks among the top 12% of midfielders across Europe for progressive passes and the top 8% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

Signing him would open up a fluent channel between the thirds, Wharton’s passing feeding into Fernandes’ more prolific take on the ball-playing art.

There’s no denying that Man United’s midfield talisman has looked somewhat out of sorts over the first couple of weeks of the term, but Wharton could revive him, all right, and take this proud football club right back to the forefront of domestic and continental football.

'Offering me a new contract!' – Ruben Amorim sees funny side of showdown talks with Man Utd chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Ruben Amorim has laughed off speculation surrounding a meeting with Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, joking that he was offered a new contract. The Portuguese coach is under pressure after a poor start to the season, with the Red Devils sitting 14th in the Premier League and already out of the Carabao Cup. But Amorim insists the talks were 'normal' and part of a long-term project.

  • Ratcliffe flies in to meet Amorim

Ratcliffe travelled to Carrington to meet Amorim on Thursday, along with CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. Manchester United have only one league win from their first four games and were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town. Despite the scrutiny, Amorim said the meeting was simply to discuss data, progress and support, and joked that the hierarchy are handing him a new deal.

Amorim jokes about what was discussed

"New contract, he was offering me a new contract!" Amorim joked when asked about Ratcliffe’s visit. He added: "No, it’s normal things, just to show the support, explaining that it’s a long project. I spoke with him, Omar and Jason, just trying to see all the data around the team. A normal meeting.

"This is football and this is the club with more pressure, maybe, than any in the world, but we want to win. We need to be more aggressive and more clinical. The rest, I think we are improving compared to last year."

  • Man Utd boss under immense pressure with results lacking

Amorim is still searching for consistency after an expensive summer rebuild and remains under pressure following a 3-0 defeat to rivals Manchester City. While he believes the team are playing better overall, results remain underwhelming. Ratcliffe’s visit was framed as a show of support, but the spotlight will only intensify if results do not improve quickly, with Amorim not willing to drop his 3-4-3 system.

Unbeaten centuries from Karun Nair and Dhruv Shorey saw Vidarbha chase down their target of 292 in style against Rajasthan and march to the semi-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.Vidarbha captain Nair notched up his fourth consecutive century and his fifth in the season and finished with an unbeaten 122. He tops the run charts this year with a whopping 664 runs, which is also his average as he has only been dismissed once in six innings.Nair and Shorey shared an unbroken 200-run stand for the second wicket as Vidarbha gunned down their target in 43.3 overs. Shorey first shared a 92-run opening stand with Yash Rathod before Nair joined him at the crease. The two then made short work of the chase, with Shorey hitting ten fours and three sixes to finish on 118* off 131 deliveries. Nair was more aggressive in his approach, taking just 82 balls for his 122, with 13 fours and five sixes. After being put in to bat, Rajasthan started slow and had only managed 15 runs when opener Abhijeet Tomar fell to Nachiket Bhute in the seventh over. One over later, his opening partner Manav Suthar was sent packing by Yash Thakur.Mahipal Lomror and Deepak Hooda then stitched a 71-run stand before the two fell in the space of four overs. Shubham Garhwal and Kartik Sharma then added 82 runs for the fifth wicket before Thakur struck again, removing Garhwal for 59. Kartik then shared a 50-run stand with wicketkeeper Samarpit Joshi but the two fell in consecutive overs, with Rajasthan’s score still under 250. Deepak Chahar smacked three sixes and two fours en route to a 14-ball 31 that helped Rajasthan get close to 300. Thakur was the pick of the bowlers for Vidarbha, with figures of 4 for 39.Vidarbha will play Maharashtra in the second semi-final in Vadodara on January 16.
