'This is the moment I had been waiting for' – Lionel Messi revels in first MLS Cup win as Inter Miami celebrate historic title

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla – Lionel Messi waited almost three years to lift his first league title in North America. Now that the Argentine has helped Inter Miami lift their first franchise title, he admitted it was their main objective this season, and he appreciated the team-wide effort by Javier Mascherano's side to accomplish it.

  • Getty Images Sport

'The team made a huge effort'

Messi, after being awarded MLS MVP postgame, acknowledged that the trophy was the culmination of a long effort:

"Three years ago, I decided to come to MLS, and today we are MLS champions,' he said. "We reached the semifinals of the [CONCACAF] Champions Cup. Last year, we went out early in the league and were eliminated in the first round. This year, winning the MLS was one of our main objectives. The team made a huge effort – it was a very long year, with many matches – and we were up to the task all season. This is the moment I had been waiting for, and that we, as a team, were waiting for. It’s very beautiful for all of us. They deserved it."

Messi was brilliant in the deciding game of the season, having a hand in all three of Inter Miami's goals and notching two assists. This is his 48th title.

    Mascherano hails Messi's impact

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano asserted that Messi had been 'important' in the Herons' MLS Cup run in a glowing post-match summary of his star man's impact.

"He was making a big effort in these last two, three, four games, which showed how important it is for him to win. I didn't tell him to do that, but it shows how special it is. He came here to win this trophy," the coach said.

The Herons took the lead against Vancouver, but conceded a second-half equalizer – before a duo of Messi assists gave them daylight and saw off a Vancouver side that didn't quite have enough on the day.

  • Getty Images Sport

'We faced a very, very good team'

Mascherano admitted, though, that Vancouver were far from a simple opponent, and gave the Herons real trouble throughout. Emmanuel Sabbi hit the post when the game was locked at 1-1, and Mascherano conceded that had he found the net, the game could have been radically different.

"We faced a very, very good team. In the second half in the first 15 to 20 minutes, they put us under pressure. We were very lucky that the ball touched the two posts. But sometimes that's the luck you need to be champions," he said.

Saying goodbye to Alba and Busquets

Messi also took a moment to congratulate departing stars Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets on legendary careers after both announced their upcoming retirements this season.

“Given what they’ve been – as players, both were among the greatest in history, each in his position, with the careers they had and the titles they won – it’s wonderful that they can retire with this MLS title. I don’t think they’re fully aware yet of what they’re experiencing, of what it means to retire. Today, something very beautiful ends for them, something to which they dedicated their whole lives. Now a new life begins for them. I wish them the very best, because they are two friends I care for deeply. I’m happy they can leave with this title.”

The best since Henry & Vieira: Arsenal star is "the best in the world"

In the almost six years since he took the job, Mikel Arteta has helped to utterly reshape Arsenal.

He’s pulled a team out of midtable mediocrity and turned them into serious contenders for the Champions League and Premier League.

Now, part of this transformation is down to his philosophy and tactics, but also to the sensational players he has promoted and signed.

In fact, one of his signings is now undoubtedly one of the world’s best players and arguably Arsenal’s best since the likes of Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry.

Vieira and Henry's Arsenal legacies

Arsenal signed Vieira from AC Milan in the summer of 1996, after a season in which he sat on the bench watching the Italian giants win the Scudetto.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, he certainly wasn’t a bit-part player in North London; he ended his first campaign having made 31 Premier League appearances, and as the years went by, he only became more and more important to the Gunners.

For example, following Tony Adams’ retirement in May 2002, Arsène Wenger made the all-action midfielder the club’s new captain, and in the eyes of many, he is one of the best to ever wear the armband.

By the time the Dakar-born monster left the club for Inter Milan in 2006, he had made 405 appearances, in which he scored 32 goals, provided 47 assists, won three titles, four FA Cups and led the North Londoners on their legendary invincible campaign.

Now, for most clubs, the iconic midfielder would probably be considered their greatest ever player, but for the Gunners, there is only one man who can hold that title: Henry.

The legendary forward joined the North Londoners from Juventus in the summer of 1999, and while it sounds absurd today, he didn’t have the best of starts.

He failed to score a single goal across his first eight appearances for the club and later revealed in an interview that he had to “be re-taught everything about the art of striking” during that period.

Whatever Wenger taught him in those few months must have been pretty special, as he’d end his first season in red and white with a tally of 26 goals and 12 assists in 48 appearances.

By the time the Les Ulis-born superstar left the club for Barcelona in 2007, he had chalked up a frankly astounding tally of 226 goals and 104 assists in 370 appearances and won two Premier Leagues and three FA Cups.

He returned for a brief spell in the 11/12 season, scoring twice in seven appearances.

Overall, when it comes to Arsenal legends, few players can match up with Henry and Vieira, but one of Arteta’s best signings is undoubtedly on his way.

Arsenal's future legend

The good news for Arsenal fans is that the squad is full of players who could go on to become club legends, but when it comes to someone performing at a world-class level, it’s hard to ignore Declan Rice.

The £105m man has been incredible for the club since his move in 2023, but towards the end of last season, and especially this year, it feels like he has taken another step forward.

Whether it’s hunting opposition players to steal the ball from them, marauding up the pitch with it at his feet or creating chance after chance with his outrageous set-piece delivery, the Englishman is operating at a truly unbelievable level.

In fact, he’s playing so well and has become so important in everything the Gunners do that it’s become increasingly hard to disagree with Thomas Frank’s assertion that he is among “the best in the world.”

That might sound hyperbolic to some, but it really, truly is not, and for those still unconvinced, you only need to look at his underlying numbers.

Moreover, something else that will help him reach the levels of Henry and Vieira is his mentality.

The England international is clearly someone who gives everything in every performance, and while he hasn’t got the armband, he is also undeniably a leader and will be a big reason for the Gunners winning anything this season.

Ultimately, while he needs those medals to get the respect he deserves, Rice is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world and will become an Arsenal legend.

He's becoming a Saka & Eze hybrid: Arsenal have signed an "agent of chaos"

The increible international has the ability to be as important as Saka and Eze for Arsenal this season.

Suryakumar withdraws appeal against Siddique to spark debate

Suryakumar Yadav, the India captain, withdrew an appeal against Junaid Siddique on Wednesday night in Dubai despite the batter being given out by the third umpire. The incident took place in the 13th over of the UAE innings. Siddique was beaten while attempting a pull off Shivam Dube, and was found outside the crease when wicketkeeper Sanju Samson collected the ball and under-armed a direct hit to the stumps at the striker’s end. As soon as he missed the ball, Siddique seemed to point towards the towel that Dube appeared to have dropped while delivering the ball.Even as the square-leg umpire referred the decision to third umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge, Suryakumar walked up to the umpire at the bowler’s end to have a chat, and withdrew the appeal after he saw the replays on the big screen. The third umpire had declared Siddique out by that stage.Related

Siddique was out one legal ball later, when he toe-ended a slog off a Dube slower delivery to Suryakumar at mid-on to leave UAE 55 for 9. It was Dube’s third wicket; UAE were eventually bowled out for 57, which India overhauled in 4.3 overs. On ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show, Aakash Chopra suggested that Suryakumar’s decision was based on the match situation at the time, which was heavily in India’s favour.”It’s event-specific in my opinion, it wouldn’t have happened if [Pakistan’s] Salman Agha was playing on 14th [of September] and the game is in the balance, and he’s just roaming around, he [Suryakumar] won’t do that,” Chopra said. “It was a good throw, presence of mind from Sanju to hit the stumps.”If he was [outside the crease], it should be out, in my opinion. But opinions may vary. The problem is the moment you bring in ethics and generosity, it opens a can of worms: ‘oh, you did this today, why are you not doing the same thing tomorrow?’ Why go down that route?”Will you do it? If that’s the case, it’s like walking. You nick it and you walk. But the day you do not walk, that’s the day that decides which side of the divide you are on and that’s when you look like a hypocrite. I’m not saying SKY is going to do it again, or not do it again. But if it is within the rules and the umpire has given it out, just stay out. That’s it.”India went on to pull off their fastest chase in men’s T20Is, in terms of overs left – eclipsing the 6.3 overs’ chase against Scotland at the T20 World Cup in Dubai in 2021.

Chelsea open talks to sign "powerful" £35m forward with 15 goals in 2025

Chelsea have now opened talks to sign a “powerful” new forward who’s scored 15 goals this season, joining the likes of Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain in the race for his signature.

Blues open talks to sign new forward amid resurgent form

After a slow start to the campaign, there were a few questions asked about Enzo Maresca’s position as manager, but the Italian’s side have since returned to form, winning their last three matches on the spin in all competitions.

Most recently, the Blues picked up a 3-0 victory on the road against Nottingham Forest, which cost Ange Postecoglou his job, and Pedro Neto put in a very impressive display, chipping in with a goal and an assist, while also completing three dribbles.

Alejandro Garnacho’s performance, on the other hand, wasn’t quite as eye-catching, with the 21-year-old still yet to get off the mark in front of goal since arriving from Manchester United, and Jamie Gittens hasn’t exactly hit the ground running either.

The former Borussia Dortmund man is without a goal or an assist in his opening eight games this season, with the Englishman’s form likely to be a concern for Maresca.

That’s the risk clubs take when they decide to sign up-and-coming talents, rather than ready-made top players, and it is certainly a questionable approach from the west Londoners, who have the capabilities to attract some of the best wingers in the world.

However, according to a report from TEAMtalk, Chelsea have joined the race for a new youngster, having opened agent talks over a deal for Vasco da Gama starlet Rayan Vitor, who certainly isn’t short of potential suitors.

Barcelona, PSG, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are also named as interested parties, with the 19-year-old emerging as one of the best young talents to come out of Brazil in recent times, but a deal would be relatively expensive.

The teenager has a £35m release clause in his contract, although the Blues may be able to hash out a deal for closer to the £26m – £29m mark.

Chelsea now in pole position to sign £80m "key target" ahead of PSG and Liverpool

The Blues are looking to complete a statement deal.

BySean Markus Clifford Oct 18, 2025 "Powerful" Vitor could be a future star

Jamie Carragher has previously made it clear exactly what he thinks of Chelsea’s recruitment policy, saying: “The club hides behind a prolonged transitional period that keeps being extended, focusing on signing the same type of young players in every transfer window.”

In truth, the young Brazilian would probably fall into that category, but that’s not to say he wouldn’t be a long-term success at Stamford Bridge, having shown signs he could go on to become a future star.

The Vasco da Gama star has 15 goals to his name in 2025, and he has received plaudits from scout Ben Mattinson.

That said, having signed Garnacho, Gittens and Estevao in recent times, it would be a questionable decision to bring in yet another young winger, and signing a centre-back should be a priority, given that Maresca is light on options at the back.

Forget Odegaard: Arsenal can get Gyokeres firing by starting "explosive" star

Arsenal supporters, alongside Mikel Arteta in unison, all spend the international break the same way; praying all the players return to London Colney injury-free.

This desperation has been exacerbated further by the fact that Martin Ødegaard suffered a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee against West Ham last weekend.

The Norwegian midfielder had been back to his dazzling best against Olympiacos three days earlier – supplying Bukayo Saka’s goal – but will now spend at least a few weeks on the sidelines, which could be a significant blow for the Premier League leaders.

So, which player should Arteta deploy in Ødegaard’s absence, and why could he be the man to get the best out of Arsenal’s most high-profile summer signing, Viktor Gyökeres?

Viktor Gyökeres' Arsenal form in numbers

Having arrived from Sporting Clube de Portugal for around £65m, one of the club’s biggest-ever outlays, scoring a whopping 97 goals in just 102 appearances for the Lisbon-based giants, sky-high expectations were placed on Gyokeres.

The widely accepted narrative was that all Arsenal needed to get to the next level is a top-class number nine, something they arguably have not had since the days of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Well, so far, in ten appearances, Gyökeres has scored just three times for the Gunners, bagging a brace during his home Premier League debut against Leeds, before also netting when Nottingham Forest visited North London.

However, the Sweden international has also missed four Opta-defined big chances in the Premier League, as well as three in the Champions League, evidence to the zeitgeist that he probably should have scored more goals.

Nevertheless, Gyökeres is a player who needs service to thrive, underlined by the fact that, of all Arsenal outfield players to have completed 90 minutes this season, he averages the lowest touches-per-90 at just 24.1.

Between this international break and the next, Arsenal’s four Premier League fixtures are against Fulham, Crystal Palace, Burnley and Sunderland, so many will be expecting Gyökeres to rack up the goals, but which teammate can help get the best out of him?

Arsenal's sensational creator can get Gyokeres firing

In their most recent outing against West Ham, Arteta did what many were calling for by deploying Ødegaard and Eberechi Eze alongside each other for the very first time, both in a central role.

This experiment was short-lived, but came a week after Eze had got the nod through the middle at Newcastle, when many had believed Arteta would go for the more defensively solid trio of Martín Zubimendi, Declan Rice and Mikel Merino, as he had at Anfield.

Now with Ødegaard set for a spell in the treatment room, Eze has to be given the keys to this team, made a central figure with the Gunners likely to be tasked with breaking down a low block on a tri-weekly basis, a challenge that often proves to be their kryptonite.

When he signed for the club in August, Sporting Director Andrea Berta labelled the England international “creative and explosive”, while Arteta described him as “powerful and exciting”, noting that he “will give us a new dimension in our attacking game”.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Meantime, speaking on talkSPORT, Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish called his former star player “sensational”, praising both his quality on the pitch as well as character and dedication.

Well, since making the move from South London to North, Eze has already shown his quality, scoring his first goal for the Gunners during last month’s EFL Cup tie at Port Vale.

The statistics below also give a sense of what Eze has added to his new team.

As outlined, despite limited minutes, Eze has instantaneously established himself as a creative force in this Arsenal team.

No player averages more shots on target on a per-90 basis, while he also ranks highly in terms of chance creation and dribbling.

At Crystal Palace last season, he created 11 big chances in the Premier League, while his ability in this department has been best showcased in Arsenal colours so far by his jaw-dropping assists for Gabriel Martinelli’s goal to salvage a draw against Manchester City.

This pass underlines exactly how he can get the best out of Gyökeres. The Swede thrives when he has open space to run into, his first goal against Leeds Exhibit A in that regard, but teammates have often been hesitant to play the early pass, as they are still adapting to having that sort of striker transplanted into the team.

Well, Eze, a new arrival himself of course, appears best-equipped to provide Gyökeres with the services he requires.

At Craven Cottage on Saturday, Eze needs to be utilised high and centrally, getting as close to Gyökeres as possible, because getting the best out of both will be key to Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes.

‘Been a bad, bad time’ – Danny Dyer has tender message for Jarrod Bowen and wife Dani amid West Ham struggles

Danny Dyer and daughter Dani have been chatting about Jarrod Bowen amid a tough time at West Ham. The Hammers sacked manager Graham Potter after just nine months in charge and have since appointed Nuno Espirito Santo as his replacement. Bowen clashed with angry fans at the start of the season after the team's Carabao Cup exit but swiftly apologised and has gone on to score three times in seven appearances in the Premier League for the Hammers.

Tough times at West Ham

Dyer's love for West Ham is well known and he's admitted it's been a difficult time for Hammers fans after a dismal start to the season that has seen a change in management. Potter was sacked after managing just six wins from 25 matches in charge after succeeding Julen Lopetegui and West Ham will be hoping Espirito Santo can revive the club's fortunes. The new boss started his tenure with a 1-1 draw away at Everton, with Bowen scoring the equaliser to grab a vital point for the Hammers.

AdvertisementGetty Images/GOALDyer shows his love for Bowen

Dyer has been happy to show his love for Bowen and hailed the West Ham captain for his efforts this season. Chatting with daughter Dani, Bowen's wife, on their Live and Let Dyers podcast he was told Bowen was taking a nap. The former EastEnders star replied: "Jarrod. He is asleep. He only got back from scoring a goal against Everton. It's been a bad, bad time and obviously you know it's been difficult for everyone involved. But your man, my son in law, has come to the front again. I almost want to go upstairs and turn him over. Tuck him in a little bit more, if his feet are out, maybe cover his feet, if they're a bit cold, just to let him rest for another couple of hours. He really has earnt it."

Bowen confident West Ham are on the right track

Bowen spoke about the club's fortunes after the draw with Everton and is confident the club are moving in the right direction under their new boss. He told BBC Sport: "It's a big point for us. We had chances to win the game. They had chances as well so, on reflection, it's probably a fair result. It speaks to the character of the team after going down 1-0. We've got a really good group here that really want to work hard and change our fortunes, and I think you saw that. We've had Nuno for two days and I thought we put in a really good performance. It's about time, putting the work in and listening to the new gaffer. We're heading in the right direction and tonight's a good start."

The new West Ham boss also spoke about his aims: "We have to build on that. Now it is about keeping it simple and trying to give the boys a good identity. We will get there in terms of identity and character, but now it's keeping it simple. The clear message was how we have to approach the game. It is a tough place to come and Everton are a good team in a good moment."

West Ham star shines for England

Bowen was also in action for England over the international break and put in a fine cameo in Tuesday's 5-0 win over Latvia that confirmed the Three Lions' qualification for World Cup 2026. The West Ham star grabbed an assist for England's fifth goal and also created more chances than any other players on the pitch despite only featuring for the last 30 minutes of the match in Riga. Former defender Micah Richards was impressed with his performance. He told the Rest is Football podcast: “I think watching the game, it’s more the way they press, the high [press]. But it is [also] about how they’re winning the ball back so quickly. So, once it goes past the first line and then the second line, not even in the mid-block, [they win the ball back] between high and mid-block. Everyone’s out [pressing]. And even a perfect example of that was Bowen.”

As undroppable as Raskin: Rangers found a new Morelos in "intelligent" star

Hold the back page! Hold the front page! While you’re at it, hold all the pages in the middle as well!

Rangers football club have won a match!

On Saturday night, against a backdrop of widespread anti-Russell Martin protests, the Gers beat Hibernian 2-0 at Ibrox in the League Cup quarter-finals.

When Martin Boyle seemingly broke the deadlock for Hibs, the mood turned mutinous but, thankfully for Martin, referee Nick Walsh disallowed the goal for handball.

Then, very much against the run of play, Rangers scored twice on the cusp of half time, with Nicolas Raskin breaking the deadlock, heading home James Tavernier’s inch-perfect corner.

Soon after, in injury time, Raskin was the architect, playing the ball in-behind for Mikey Moore, who squared it to Bojan Miovski to score his first goal in Rangers blue.

So, finally something for Martin to build on ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League opener against Genk in Govan, but which members of his squad have made themselves undroppable?

Nicolas Raskin's return

Raskin was back in the Rangers lineup on Saturday and, as literally every onlooker could’ve predicted, he made the team so much better!

Before this, following a falling out with under-fire manager Martin, the Belgian was left on the bench for Champions League qualifiers against Viktoria Plzeň and Club Brugge, before not even being included in the matchday squad for the Gers’ last two matches, the drab goalless draw with Celtic and then the miserable 2-0 defeat at the hands of Hearts.

Following the latter, presenter Darrell Currie was perplexed as to how Martin thinks it could possibly be a good idea to leave his “best player in the stand”.

Last season, Raskin was named Rangers’ Players’ Player of the Year and Fans’ Player of the Year, underlining that he was unquestionably their stand-out performer.

Earlier this month, the 24-year-old started and scored for Belgium in a World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan at Stade Constant Vanden Stock, alongside Youri Tielemans and Kevin De Bruyne, who aren’t bad are they, suggesting he is pretty decent?

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Thus, going forward, Martin has to set aside his differences and build the team around his talisman, but has someone else made themselves equally as undroppable as Raskin?

Rangers' new star attacker

As already mentioned, Miovski bagged his first goal for Rangers during Saturday evening’s victory, and it’ll likely be the first of many.

During his time at Aberdeen, the North Macedonian international scored four times against Rangers, but could have more than that for the club in just a few weeks’ time.

In total, he netted on 44 occasions for the Dons, so how does that compare to recent Rangers strikers?

As the table outlines, in recent years, Dessers and Morelos are the only Rangers strikers regularly reaching 20 or more goals in a season, with the Colombian, by some distance, the club’s best centre-forward of the recent era.

Well, Miovski has shown that he is capable of reaching those heights himself.

His tally of 26 goals in the 2023/24 season for Aberdeen, thereby earning his £6.8m move to Girona, is made all the more impressive by the fact that the Dons actually finished down in the bottom of the Premiership table, with four of these goals coming in Europe too, on target against BK Häcken, HJK and PAOK.

In, what should be, a more dominant team, Miovski will be capable of scoring even more goals, hoping this weekend simply opens the floodgates.

Upon his arrival, Martin praised the striker’s “movement, intelligence, and ability to score goals”, so could he be the man to keep his boss in situ?

Thus, ahead of the Thursday night European tie with Genk, the North Macedonian is simply undroppable, clearly the Gers’ best striker option, with Danilo having done very little since arriving from Feyenoord, while the jury is still out on new signing Youssef Chermiti, considering he hasn’t scored a senior goal for anyone since May 2023.

Ferguson thinks he knows Rangers stars who are an Ibrox problem for Martin

This weekend feels huge for the manager.

Ravindra, Latham and Bracewell book New Zealand's semi-final spot

So many teams are in transition right now, but all through this Champions Trophy, New Zealand have been showing that their new generation is ready for the big time. It was not so long ago that Kane Williamson was carrying this batting line-up. Seems Rachin Ravindra wants that responsibility now.He didn’t mind slotting into an unfamiliar position. He didn’t flinch having to come out at 15 for 2. He didn’t stop smiling when he brought up his hundred, an innings that confirmed not just his team’s spot in the semi-finals but also India’s. Pakistan and Bangladesh are now officially knocked out.Related

This was a game that Najmul Hossain Shanto’s team had to win to stay alive. But they batted like that was just too much trouble. Bangladesh started at nearly a run a ball. But ten of the next 15 overs went for three runs or fewer. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah fell from the pressure created in this period. A combined 511 matches’ worth of experience was only good for 6 runs in a do-or-die game. Their wickets left Shanto with no way forward. He kept having to readjust to a new partner, to a new match situation, and in the end, produced a staccato innings of 77 off 110. He could have done better. The others should have done better.Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana raised Bangladesh’s hopes with a fiery opening spell, rattling Will Young’s stumps in the first over and snaring Williamson for a rare single-digit score. The infield was richly populated at that point. The whole atmosphere was buzzing, the crowd also getting in the act. Into this walked Ravindra. One of the best things about his batting is his touch. It’s so pure. Down at No. 4 – he was brought into the XI to replace an ill Daryl Mitchell – there was possibly a risk that he wouldn’t be able to take full toll. But as luck would have it, he began his innings within the field restrictions and that meant he could profit from his timing. His first five fours were all about finding the gaps because his timing always took care of the rest.Ravindra had to wait 11 overs since the field spread to find his next boundary but that didn’t mean he was stagnant. His first 23 runs came off 21 balls with five fours. His next 28 runs came off 29 balls with one four. There was one chance in between all that. A mix-up with his Wellington team-mate Devon Conway could have resulted in him being run-out had Tanzid Hasan been able to get a direct hit in the 12th over.

Bangladesh weren’t able to take their chances. New Zealand did. Williamson did have a hand in proceedings here, picking up smart catches at short midwicket and cover. Michael Bracewell, after wrapping up an uninterrupted ten-over spell, ran 30 yards to his right to pick up a diving catch that probably wasn’t even his. But he decided to take charge and it worked.Bangladesh also weren’t able to rotate strike. New Zealand could. Those were the biggest points of difference between the two teams. The pitch did become much better for batting under lights, though, a fact Mitchell Santner was looking forward to when he won the toss and decided to chase and of all people, Bracewell was his ace in the hole with the ball. The 34-year-old offspin-bowling allrounder himself couldn’t believe he had taken 4 for 26. In the mid-match interview, he said, “Funny one, once you let go [of the ball] you don’t have much control what happens at the other end.”Bracewell contributed 43 of 178 dot balls that plagued Bangladesh. You have to go back to 2012 to find an innings they had paced quite so poorly. Rotating strike was a struggle and the avenues they chose to get out of that weren’t ideal. Perhaps the pitch was too slow in the afternoon to be able to work the ball into gaps. Mushfiqur made a play against Bracewell but he couldn’t clear the long boundary with his slog sweep. Bangladesh were 106 for 4 in the 23rd over. At a time when consolidation was actually needed, Mahmudullah made an ill-advised trip down the track and skewed a leading edge to cover.

Bracewell contributed to his success by slowing his pace down. Bangladesh contributed considerably more. They exit the tournament having faced more than 50 overs of dot balls. Their decision-making left them so short on batting resources that they had Taskin on strike for the 45th over and it ended up as a maiden. The death overs were a total flex for the Black Caps. At one point, they were more than happy with just three fielders on the boundary, instead of the five allowed.Bangladesh were reminded what could have been towards the end of the chase when there was sharp turn, leading edges, low bounce and even a direct-hit run-out. The wicket merely added to their regret at the one that got away – Ravindra was 26 when Tanzid missed – and the runs that got away – 260 would have made this game so much more competitive. As it happened, New Zealand went into the chase knowing all they needed were a couple of partnerships and they got those. Ravindra put on 57 runs with Conway and then 129 with Tom Latham, who is so good as a crisis manager. You can almost imagine him side-kicking whoever leads the earth’s remaining population during the zombie apocalypse. First things first, though, there’s an ICC trophy up for grabs.
