Farke could forget about Gnonto with Leeds swoop for "ridiculous" star

There are just under two months left to run before the summer transfer window officially slams shut and there could still be plenty of change within the Leeds United squad before then.

The Whites failed to earn an instant return to the Premier League after they were beaten 1-0 in the play-off final by Southampton at Wembley in May.

Daniel Farke led his side to a third-placed finish in the Championship and could not get over the line in the showpiece event in London, which means that the German head coach is now preparing for another year in the second tier.

The former Norwich boss' plans have already been dented by the departure of one of his key players as Archie Gray recently moved to Tottenham Hotspur.

Joe Rodon did come back the other way from Spurs, though, to sign a permanent deal after his loan stint at Elland Road during the 2023/24 campaign.

There could be further exits from West Yorkshire before the deadline passes at the end of August and that could open the door for more signings to be made by Farke and his recruitment team.

Possible change on the wing for Leeds

Firstly, Football Insider recently reported that Leeds are expected to cash in on at least two more star players before the end of the window.

The outlet named Georginio Rutter, Wilfried Gnonto, and Crysencio Summerville as three gems who have attracted interest from top-flight clubs, and that they are all 'likely' to leave.

Earlier this summer, it was reported that the Italy U21 international, Gnonto, is pushing for a move away from Elland Road to bolster his international hopes, as a move to the Serie A could put him in the spotlight for Luciano Spalletti.

The former Inter and Zurich prospect leaving the club would mean that Leeds would likely have to dip into the market to sign a new winger, and they have been linked with a proven Championship star already.

Last month, The Athletic reported that the Whites are one of a number of teams interested in a possible swoop to sign Basel winger Liam Millar.

It was claimed that they are eyeing up the Canada international alongside fellow Championship sides Burnley and Sheffield United, who have just been relegated from the Premier League.

The former Liverpool youth player, who spent last season on loan at Preston North End, is said to be open to a return to England, but it remains to be seen how much Basel want for the electric forward.

If Leeds can win the race to sign Millar from the Swiss giants, though, then Farke could forget all about Gnonto by landing a fantastic winger at Championship level.

Wilfried Gnonto's Championship performances for Leeds

The Italian dynamo remained at Elland Road last summer after the club's relegation from the Premier League, despite reportedly wanting to move on.

Sky Sports claimed that the attacker handed in an official transfer request in an attempt to force through a move to Everton, but the Whites dug their heels in and managed to keep hold of him.

Wilfried Gnonto

The 20-year-old starlet was then a regular in the side, either as a starter or a substitute, throughout the 2023/24 Championship campaign – appearing in 36 of their 46 games.

Gnonto racked up eight goals and two assists in those 36 appearances in the second tier, along with zero goals and one assist in three play-off matches.

This was a solid return from the young whiz but his exit may not be a gigantic blow for Farke when you consider that the German boss would still have Dan James to call upon on the flank.

As you can see in the table above, the Wales international outperformed Gnonto as both a scorer and a creator of goals from a right wing position.

He produced a staggering 26 goals and 'big chances' created combined, compared to the Italian's 13, and that is why signing an out-and-out right winger may not be a priority.

Instead, Leeds could forget about Gnonto by signing Millar – who predominantly plays on the left but can also play centrally and on the right – to replace him, with James then stepping into the first-choice role on the right.

Why Leeds should sign Liam Millar

Firstly, the Canada international is a young player, aged 24, who still has time to develop and improve over the years to come, which means that Farke could work with him on the pitch to grow his value.

This means that he would arrive as a signing to make an immediate impact on the pitch whilst also having the long-term in mind, as he could be a future asset for the club.

The Whites should also sign the £8k-per-week maestro as a replacement, even if not a direct one, for Gnonto because he has proven himself to be an excellent performer in the Championship.

As you can see in the table above, the Canadian whiz produced ten direct goal contributions from the left flank, despite having to play in a wing-back role at times due to Ryan Lowe's 3-5-2 system.

A natural winger, Millar was forced slightly further back in that formation and that restricted what he could do in the final third, which is why his tally of ten goals and assists combined was particularly impressive.

In fact, he ranked within the top 1% of full-backs for progressive carries (5.90), successful take-ons (2.54), and touches in the opposition box (3.85) per 90, which speaks to how direct and electric he was down the flank.

Millar, who writer Alexandre Gangué-Ruzic described as being in "ridiculous" form for Preston, also ranked within the top 12% for Expected Assisted Goals per 90 (0.15) and the top 3% for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.18).

Now, imagine the kind of impact he could have when playing as a natural winger in Farke's 4-2-3-1 system. The former Liverpool ace could thrive with his magical play on the ball, allowing the manager to forget all about Gnonto by providing fantastic quality and depth out wide.

£100,000-per-week ace wants Arsenal exit as Premier League trio offer escape

A £30m-rated player wants to quit Arsenal, with three Premier League sides targeting him and could offer an escape route in the coming weeks.

Players who could be sold by Arsenal this summer

Both Mohamed Elneny and Cedric Soares have just a few days left of their Gunners deals and will leave after June 30 when their contracts expire, as already confirmed by the club in their 22-man release list.

A succession of players could follow Soares and Elneny out of the door fairly soon, with 30-year-old midfielder Thomas Partey entering the final 12 months of his contract and attracting rumoured interest from abroad.

Partey is wanted by Saudi and Turkish sides, with the Ghanaian appearing more surplus to requirements after making just 14 Premier League appearances last campaign. Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is also expected to leave Arsenal after the Englishman lost his number one spot between the sticks to David Raya last season.

Sporting director Edu Gaspar and manager Mikel Arteta are set to make some crucial decisions on squad players over the coming weeks, with Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira, Emile Smith Rowe, Eddie Nketiah, Aaron Ramsdale, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Nuno Tavares, Olekasandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney coming as players who could be sold by Arsenal this summer as well.

The Gunners will need funds from player sales to financially back their transfer activity, as they seek to challenge Man City for another Premier League title next season.

Reiss Nelson wants to leave Arsenal as Premier League trio eye moves

As per CBS Sports, uncertainty also surrounds the future of Reiss Nelson. The £100,000-per-week ace, who Arsenal value at around £30 million, started just one top-flight match last season – making the rest of his 15 appearances from the substitute's bench.

CBS claim Nelson favours a move away from Arsenal this summer, with Crystal Palace, West Ham and Brighton all interested in offering the 24-year-old an escape route.

“I think Reiss Nelson will go this summer and don’t think he will be the only academy product to do so,” said journalist Charles Watts on Nelson's future to CaughtOffside earlier this year.

“Arsenal need to bring in some cash to help boost the finances and the likes of Nelson, Eddie Nketiah and Emile Smith Rowe will all generate interest. Nelson was very close to leaving last summer when his old deal was running out. Brighton were very interested, as were AC Milan. I’ve been told the offer from Milan was a really appealing one to the winger and there were many at Arsenal who believed that he would end up moving to Italy.

“But Nelson loves Arsenal and Mikel Arteta was happy with the performances he produced over the second half of last season. Arsenal didn’t want to lose him on a free and so they pushed for him to sign a new deal and ultimately he decided to stay put.

“However, I don’t think that means he will definitely stay this summer."

There wasn’t much support from Anisul Islam Emon, Rony Talukdar, Mahedi Hasan and Fazle Mahmud, none of whom got past 14.From 93 for 5 in the 14th over, Nurul Hasan and Jaker Ali finished well, adding an unbroken 52 for the sixth wicket. Left-hander Mohammad Naim holed out for 13, while Tanzid Hasan and Sabbir Rahman both fell lbw to spinners for a duck and a scratchy 7 respectively. Rahim and Yasir Ali started the rebuilding job to take Dhaka to 50 for 3 at the halfway mark. They added 86 runs for the fourth wicket, a stand which ended when Yasir was caught for 34 but not before giving Dhaka some standing ground. The final push came from Rahim, who ensured Dhaka got 50 off the last five overs. He finished unbeaten on 73 off 50 balls with three sixes and seven fours, as his side put up a respectable 145 in 20 overs without any further loss of wickets. It was Dhaka’s third win in five games, putting them in the top three and on course for a playoff spot.

Newcastle considering early summer bid for "wonderful" £5k-a-week player

Newcastle United could make an early bid for a "wonderful" player in the summer transfer window, as they look to take advantage of his current club's financial issues.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies' season ended more positively than many expected in the end, with Eddie Howe getting players fit again and guiding his side to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League.

A new goalkeeper looks to be the order of the day at St James' Park, suggesting that Nick Pope is no longer seen as the perfect option between the sticks, and Arsenal stopper Aaron Ramsdale looks like a primary target there. He and Howe know each other well after working together at Bournemouth in the past, and it is clear that David Raya is now very much first choice at the Emirates.

Alexander Isak has impressed greatly for Newcastle this season, scoring 21 goals in 27 league starts, but that's not to say that a new striker isn't needed, particularly if Callum Wilson is no longer at the club next term. Sevilla ace Youssef En-Nesyri has been backed to join Newcastle, following a strong campaign of his own that has seen him find the net 15 times in La Liga.

Centre-back additions are also a must, in terms of squad depth and covering for the absence of Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, and Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo has been strongly linked with a move to the Magpies while Lloyd Kelly is expected to join from Bournemouth.

Newcastle want to sign "wonderful" player

According to a fresh claim from Football Insider, Newcastle could make an early offer for Leicester City midfielder Kasey McAteer, and the Foxes may be forced to sell him this summer in order to aid their financial woes. Everton and Crystal Palace are also believed to be interested in securing the services of the 22-year-old, however, so there will be a battle to snap him up.

All three clubs are "monitoring the situation" of the forward, who is out of contract at the King Power Stadium at the end of next season, meaning now is the time for the Foxes to cash in on him.

Kasey-McAteer-Leicester-City

McAteer could be an interesting signing by Newcastle, not necessarily coming in as a big-name addition, but a homegrown talent with plenty of potential. This season, he has scored six times in the Championship – more than Harvey Barnes' tally of five in a similar role – playing his part in Leicester winning the title and returning to the Premier League,

Meanwhile, Johnnie Jackson once lauded him during a spell on loan at AFC Wimbledon, saying: "His ability is there for all to see, but he has a real versatility about him in the positions he can play. A wonderful attitude to his work. He wants to work hard and improve. When you are looking at loanees, that’s the type you want."

Howe must ensure Newcastle's 7/10 star is a regular starter in 24/25

The Magpies talent produced an excellent display in the final outing of the season as Newcastle attempted to seal European qualification.

ByEthan Lamb May 19, 2024

The fact that Leicester are likely going to be forced to sell the £5,000-a-week McAteer means that Newcastle could even eye a cut-price deal, especially due to his contract situation, and he could be a handy squad player at St James' Park, proving to be capable of excelling on either flank.

  • WHAT UNITED SAID

"The focus will be to design a world-class football destination and home for Manchester United fans, coupled with a wider masterplan comprising mixed-use developments which will benefit the local community, attract new residents, increase job provision, and make it a vibrant destination for visitors from Manchester, the UK and all around the world," the club's announcement said.

    WHAT NEXT FOR UNITED?

It has been reported that partial-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to have a decision made regarding Old Trafford by the end of the year. It emerged this week that United are open to demolishing their iconic ground and build a 100,000 capacity 'Wembley of the North' stadium, which would cost around £2 billion ($2.6bn).

ECB confirms schedule for Pakistan, Ireland visits

England have confirmed Emirates Old Trafford and the Ageas Bowl as the venues for fixtures against Ireland and Pakistan this summer. Ireland will visit later this month for three ODIs, while Pakistan have already arrived in the country ahead of Test and T20I series. The ECB has been working to salvage as much of its home international programme as possible after the Covid-19 shutdown, and said that discussions remained ongoing about the possibility of Australia touring, and a proposed women’s tri-series featuring England, India and South Africa.Ireland had been due to play their series, part of the World Cup Super League, in September but agreed to move the games forward, with all three ODIs to be held behind closed doors in Southampton from July 30 to August 4.The first Test against Pakistan will begin a day later in Manchester, with the teams then moving down to Southampton for the second and third matches at the Ageas Bowl, starting on August 13 and 21. They will return to Manchester for T20Is at Emirates Old Trafford on August 28, 30 and September 1.”Confirmation of these matches against Ireland and Pakistan is another important step for our game as we begin to safely stage international cricket again, but also to minimise the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had, and will continue to have, on cricket at all levels,” ECB chief executive Tom Harrison said.”It has taken significant effort and expertise to allow us to reach a position where cricket is now ready and able to return to the field of play from the elite level to recreational cricket.”We owe a significant debt of gratitude to the players, staff and administrators of the Cricket West Indies, Cricket Ireland, and the Pakistan Cricket Board for their willingness and co-operation to get international cricket back up and running and allow these matches to be staged.”Sports fans across the world will benefit as international cricket returns to our screens while it will also provide much-needed financial aid at all levels of cricket in England and Wales as we aim to withstand the challenges in front of us.”It must be reiterated that there is still much work for the ECB and the cricket network to do as we try to plot a path through this pandemic. Chief amongst our priorities is to build on our commitment to support and grow women’s cricket and at the elite level discussions continue to progress to determine the best and safest way to host a tri-series against India and South Africa.”We also continue to explore options for our England men to play white-ball series against Australia this summer and hope to have news on those series soon.”The majority of Pakistan’s 29-man squad flew to the UK in late June, despite disruption caused by a number of positive Covid-19 tests. Ten players did not take the initial flight, but all but one have now returned the two negative tests required to participate in the tour.Like West Indies and Pakistan, Ireland’s players are expected to given an ‘opt out’ by the selectors in case any have concerns about Covid-19 in the UK.

'I told Paul Pogba not to join Man Utd' – Patrice Evra says Red Devils wanted to 'humiliate Sir Alex Ferguson' by signing French midfielder as club legend urged him to join Real Madrid instead

  • Evra warned Pogba against joining Man Utd
  • Believes the signing was made to 'humiliate SAF'
  • Pogba waiting on ruling over four-year doping ban
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Pogba came up through Manchester United's youth system having joined the club as a 16-year-old. However, in 2012, after failing to persuade Sir Alex Ferguson that he should be playing more, he moved on a free transfer to join Italian giants Juventus. Four years later, having established himself as one of Europe's top midfield players, the Frenchman returned to Old Trafford but Evra believes the Red Devils' top brass made the signing simply to 'sell shirts' and 'humiliate Ferguson'.

    WHAT EVRA SAID

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Evra said: "Manchester United brought Paul Pogba back because they wanted to humiliate Sir Alex Ferguson. I told Paul to not go back because he wanted Real Madrid and Madrid wanted him, but Florentino Perez didn’t want to pay the money.

"His agent called United, and he signed with him without telling me. The club was happy because they were selling shirts, you know the kids love Pogba – it was more commercial than anything on the pitch.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Glazer family of Manchester United spent an astronomical price to acquire Pogba. As a result, high expectations were placed on the gifted midfielder, but during his six-year stay, he was unable to live up to those expectations and left again in 2022 signing on a free transfer to Juventus yet again.

Pogba also rejects many of the claims made by Evra within the interview, which are either a distortion of the truth, or wholly inaccurate.

He is also disappointed that numerous claims were not verified before they were published.

Azam Khan, Mohammad Hasnain get Quetta Gladiators over the line

In a contest that ebbed and flowed, Islamabad United came up short in the end

The Report by Danyal Rasool20-Feb-2020

Azam Khan smacks a pull shot•PSL

The tournament might have begun with a decidedly underwhelming opening ceremony, but that isn’t a term you’d use for the opening match. The two most successful sides in the PSL showed a packed Karachi crowd exactly why they were on top, with a game that ebbed and flowed, and was finally settled with a Ben Cutting six over long-off to seal a win for the defending champions. Azam Khan had set up the win with a scintillating 33-ball 59, while Mohammad Hasnain put in a Man-of-the-Match performance, his figures of 4-0-25-4 ensuring Islamabad United wouldn’t even bat their full 20 overs.Islamabad were bowled out for 168, a below-par total given how the first half of their innings unfolded, after Colin Munro’s dismissal off the first ball. The template they execute so successfully was working like a dream, with the overseas picks doing their job expertly. Dawid Malan steered the innings with a half-century that propelled Islamabad to the 100-mark in the 11th over, and he was ably assisted by Luke Ronchi, who played the kind of cameo the PSL is so familiar with. But once Ben Cutting came into the attack and began varying the pace intelligently, Islamabad saw the runs dry up and wickets ensued.Cutting would account for Malan, who saw that he needed to take on even more of the scoring burden, and when the batsman holed out, the wheels fully came off. For the rest of the overs, Islamabad flailed in the face of a bowling attack that had their measure by now, and would wind up their innings five balls short.Islamabad still made a game of it when Muhammad Musa, brilliant at the start, removed Jason Roy in the first over, and they nailed the Powerplay with Shane Watson and Ahmed Shehzad also back in the hut. But Azam’s brilliance wrested the game back in favour of the defending champions. A supporting knock from Mohammad Nawaz took them close enough to the target that they could afford a late wobble and Quetta were also helped by some late generosity from Musa.Turning pointFor all that had gone against Islamabad, they looked the likelier team in the final four overs. The Azam hurricane had been withstood, Nawaz was gone, with with four overs to go, Quetta still needed 37 with their last recognised pair of Cutting and Sohail Khan at the crease. But Musa, so brilliant he didn’t concede a run in his first nine balls and dismissed Roy, ended up undoing most of that good work with a horror 18th over. One in the slot to Ben Cutting went the distance, before he found a ball slipping out of his hands, turning into a beamer that the keeper failed to prevent from reaching the boundary. Sohail Khan would punish the free hit with another six. The first four balls of that over yielded 19 runs, and Islamabad’s challenge would end with a whimper.Star of the dayThere was cynicism about his place in the side because he was the head coach’s son. There was ambiguity about whether he was fit due to his rather rotund frame. The Karachi crowd shouted at him when he walked out to bat, an unflattering reference to someone who is perceived not to have earned their place on merit. But Azam Khan was the reason Quetta opened their title defence with a victory. He looked a shade uncertain when he came on, but it would last all of four deliveries. From the moment he pulled the fifth to midwicket, Azam was on his way to an unstoppable half-century.There was no bowler he didn’t spare, but he took a particular liking to the opposition captain Shadab Khan, whom he carted for a six and two fours in the 15th over to bring Quetta in line with an asking rate that had begun to head northward. He combined easy power with surprisingly nifty running between the wickets alongside Sarfaraz Ahmed, and dissipated the pressure he would have felt at the start of his innings, finding a bit of breathing room. The big missIt hasn’t been a happy start for Shadab as captain. Islamabad would have hoped the added responsibility would see him return to the levels of form witnessed from the legspinner in his first two seasons, but that didn’t happen today. Azam was responsible for much of the pounding Shadab took, smashing him for 31 runs in the 13 balls he faced. Even after Azam had been dismissed and Shadab brought himself on for the final over, things wouldn’t turn in his favour, with Cutting’s six the final ignominy on a forgettable day that saw him leak 46 in 3.3 wicketless overs.Where the teams standQuetta go to the top of the table, becoming the first side to register points at this year’s PSL, while Islamabad United will look for their opening points against Multan Sultans on Saturday.

AB de Villiers feeling 'in some of the best form of my career' as he joins Brisbane Heat

AB de Villiers has arrived in Australia for his long-awaited Big Bash stint with the Brisbane Heat feeling in some of the best form of his career and ready for the “big role” he has to play on and off the field.De Villiers replaces Tom Banton for the latter stages of the tournament with the Heat currently fifth in the table, having four wins and four defeats from their eight matches. It was a lengthy process to bring de Villiers to Australia with the chances of the signing having seemingly slipped away until the deal the was agreed in early October.De Villiers joins on the back of 325 runs at 46.42 and a strike-rate of 152.58 in the Mzansi Super League for Tshwane Spartans, who finished runner’s up.”I had a fantastic tournament in South Africa, had a few good knocks, felt in some of the best form of my career so hopefully we’ll see more of that in this tournament,” he said the morning after arriving in Brisbane ahead of his first match against the Adelaide Strikers on Tuesday.Even with so many matches behind him – 304 in all T20s – de Villiers admitted he still gets butterflies but believes that is a good thing and is ready to embrace a broader role with the Heat.”I’ve said it many times before, wherever I play around the world, whether it’s a club game or a World Cup semi-final, I feel the same pressure when I go out to bat,” he said. “I’ve always got that pressure I put on myself to perform at the best of my ability. I’ve done it so many times, it doesn’t guarantee success but I know what to expect, I know the butterflies are a good sign generally.”All I can do is go out and enjoy myself, make sure I have a good influence on my team-mates and make sure I have an impact on the game with bat in hand. Then there’s the fielding and the off-field stuff, I have big role to play as an individual and not just a cricketer.”The Heat captain Chris Lynn has urged team-mates to make use of every moment de Villiers is with them as they hunt for a place in the knockouts in what has so far been a topsy-turvy tournament.”Experience is everything, there were a couple of games where we needed that experience so to have him is just gold,” Lynn said. “We’ve got a young team and the guys are mad if they aren’t like a sponge over the next few weeks.””It’s a natural role for me,” de Villiers said. “I’m 35 and have played quite a bit of cricket around the world. I’d hate to think that I won’t have that kind of role. I had a similar role in South Africa. I enjoy guys asking me questions about my batting. Like to think we’ll help some of the youngsters understand what’s needed to achieve success.”Where de Villiers bats is yet to be determined with the Heat needing to reshape the order now that Banton has departed, but it is likely to be at No. 3 or 4. All eyes will be on the team if de Villiers and Lynn are at the crease together for any length of time. “It could be interesting,” de Villiers said. “I don’t know what to expect to be honest. I’ve a feeling it’s going to work and will be nice to watch.”Lynn, who was a key part in long project to get de Villiers to the Heat, was in no doubt of his standing. “In my opinion he’s probably the No. 1 entertaining batsman in the world. When he gets going he hits the ball 360 degrees whenever he wants. I believe he’s two steps ahead of the game compared to everyone else. I think he’s the best in the game and the way he thinks is totally different to other batters around the world.”
