Debutant Nijat Masood, Hazratullah Zazai, Najibullah Zadran put Afghanistan 1-0 up

Sikandar Raza’s 31-ball 45, Ryan Burl’s three-wicket haul in vain for Zimbabwe

Firdose Moonda11-Jun-2022
Zimbabwe began their final preparations for next month’s T20 World Cup Qualifier with a six-wicket loss to Afghanistan, in the opening encounter of a three-match series. With only one partnership worth more than 30 runs, Zimbabwe posted a middling score of 159 for 8, but almost turned into something more competitive than it looked. Ryan Burl’s 3 for 14 gave them a chance of defending the total, but an 83-run opening stand and Najibullah Zadran’s unbeaten 44 secured victory for Afghanistan, with four balls to spare. In the absence of Sean Williams, Zimbabwe’s batting continued to look thin, with only two of their batters scoring more than 30. Wessley Madhevere, who was one of those, survived the loss of Innocent Kaia, his opening partner, to share a second-wicket stand of 30 with captain Craig Ervine. The pair was in a good position to lay a solid foundation for Zimbabwe but Ervine became debutant Nijat Masood’s first victim when he offered the medium-pacer a return catch off a leading edge.Madhevere and Regis Chakabva took Zimbabwe into the ninth over before Madhevere was bowled by Rashid Khan, to spark a collapse. Zimbabwe lost 3 for 33, which left it to Sikandar Raza and the lower order to finish strongly.Raza top-scored with 45 but gave Masood his third wicket when he cut him behind square where Hazratullah Zazai took a good catch at short third-man. Masood finished with 3 for 39, successful but expensive and it was Rashid Khan who was more economical with figures of 1 for 21 in his four overs.Related

Madande, Muzarabani, Myers back in Zimbabwe squad

Afghanistan took control of the chase through their openers. Zazai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz put on 83 in the first ten overs, which included 44 runs in boundaries. They were stopped in successive balls when they tried to take on Burl. Gurbaz was caught off a leading edge and Zazai at long-on before Usman Ghani edged to the keeper, as he tried to sweep, to leave Afghanistan on 86 for 3 in 11 overs.Four boundary-less overs followed and as a result Afghanistan’s required run-rate crept above 12 an over. They needed 61 runs off the last five overs and 54 off the last four before Blessing Muzarabani’s penultimate over cost 26 runs as Zadran plundered 16 runs off the first three deliveries, which included a no-ball. Luke Jongwe pulled things back when he bowled Darwish Rasooli in the 18th over, which went for 10. Tendai Chatara delivered the 19th, which also cost 10 and set up a tense finish.Muzarabani returned to bowl the last over, and had seven runs to defend, but Zadran took two off his first ball and swung the second over square leg to seal the win with a six.

Bhuvneshwar, Umran Malik share seven wickets to guide Sunrisers into top four

Sunrisers registered their fourth successive victory to be placed fourth on the table with eight points

Do Punjab Kings have the right personnel for their all-out-big-hitting philosophy?

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s sensational seam attack handcuffed Punjab Kings’ big-hitting line-up, despite Liam Livingstone’s 33-ball 60, to give them their fourth successive victory in IPL 2022. Sunrisers are now fourth on the table with eight points.Livingstone continued to roll out the boundaries, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan impressed with their variations once again, but it was Umran Malik who produced the most thrilling passage of play when he bowled a four-wicket last over, packed with breakneck pace, to dismiss Kings for 151. Kings lost their last five wickets for nothing as Bhuvneshwar and Malik, in particular, proved unhittable at the death.A target of 152 was right up the alley of Sunrisers, despite the loss of Kane Williamson in the powerplay. Rahul Tripathi zoomed to 34 off 22 balls and although Rahul Chahar snagged him and Abhishek Sharma in successive overs, Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram iced the game with an unbroken 75-run partnership off 50 balls. Man down…and out
Kings had suffered a major blow even before the toss, with their regular captain Mayank Agarwal sidelined from this game with a toe injury sustained during training on Saturday. Kings were dealt further blows when Bhuvneshwar and Natarajan both struck in the powerplay.Bhuvneshwar bothered Shikhar Dhawan with hard lengths and even hit him on the box, leaving him lying flat on the floor. Dhawan, however, recovered sufficiently to resume his innings, but Bhuvneshwar had him flapping a weak pull to mid-on for 8 off 11 balls.Soon after, Natarajan found inswing and the inside edge of Prabhsimran Singh. Neither Natarajan nor Pooran, who had caught it behind the stumps, was confident about the edge, but Williamson ultimately reviewed it in the nick of time to have the on-field not-out decision reversed. Kings managed 48 for 2 in six overs – their second-lowest powerplay score this season. They slumped further to 61 for 4 in eight overs.Livingstone tees off
The early strikes, however, didn’t stop Livingstone from showcasing his range once again. He unveiled a scooped four off the second ball he faced and three balls later, he scooped Marco Jansen for six more. Livingstone also used the extra pace of Malik to his advantage, shanking him for two sixes and a four, with the pick of them being a 106-metre six over midwicket. When left-arm fingerspinner J Suchith dangled one too full, Livingstone pumped him down the ground for a more launguid six. Soon after, Livingstone raised a half-century, off 26 balls, his third in his last four innings.Shahrukh gets stuck against Suchith
In stark contrast to Livingstone, Shahrukh Khan started slowly – he got off the mark on his eighth ball – and Suchith tightened the screws further by bowling into the pitch. Shahrukh scored only 14 off 13 balls off Suchith. So he tried to find runs elsewhere and swung at his Tamil Nadu team-mate Natarajan, and copped a blow on the helmet. It was Bhuvneshwar who made the incision in the 17th over when he had Shahrukh skewing a catch to short-cover for 26 off 28 balls. The struggles of Shahrukh and then Odean Smith (13 off 15 balls) meant that Livingstone faced only seven balls in overs 16 to 19.Umran Malik ended with figures of 4-1-28-4•BCCIMalik’s four-wicket last over
After having bounced out Jitesh Sharma after the powerplay, Malik dominated Kings’ lower order by hitting speeds close to 150kph. He similarly bounced out Smith and then castled both Chahar and Vaibhav Arora off successive balls. Arshdeep Singh was run-out off the hat-trick ball in one of the most dramatic final-over sequences in the IPL. It was only the third time the last four wickets (7 to 10) fell in a T20 game without adding a run.Abhishek, Tripathi steady Sunrisers
Kagiso Rabada got the new ball to stick in the DY Patil pitch and had Williamson chipping a drive to mid-off for 3 off nine balls. Tripathi dashed out of the blocks, like he usually does, hitting four fours and a six. He allowed Abhishek, the other opener, to get his eye in on a track where some balls stopped, and others came onto the bat nicely.Tripathi kept nailing the lofted drive against Varun Chakravarthy in Sunrisers’ last match against Kolkata Knight Riders, but this time when he tried to repeat it against Chahar, he picked out long-off. Unlike Varun’s, Chahar’s length was fractionally shorter and he got dip to mess with Tripathi’s timing. In his next over, Chahar had an advancing Abhishek holing out to long-on for 31 off 25 balls.Pooran and Markram seal victory
When Pooran and Markram came together, Sunrisers needed 75 off 57 balls. The pair needed only 50 balls to complete another chase and put Sunrisers in the top half of the table.Pooran could have been dismissed on 16 in the 14th over had Rabada capitalised on a mix-up by effecting a direct hit. Pooran and Markram then found a higher gear, something that Kings couldn’t do during their middle and end overs.

Move over Cerny: Rangers star who can "bring fire" is Clement’s main man

Glasgow Rangers are falling further and further away from the title race in the Scottish Premiership after they dropped points yet again on Saturday.

The Light Blues were held to a 1-1 draw by Dundee United, who took the lead in the match, at Ibrox and are now a whopping 11 points off first place.

Philippe Clement’s side are third in the division, eight points adrift of Aberdeen and 11 behind Celtic, as they have already drawn two and lost three of their opening 12 games in the top-flight.

Rangers are in the final of the League Cup, which is due to be played at Hampden Park against Celtic next month, and have won two of their four games in the Europa League.

However, their league form simply has not been good enough and Clement, who needs to turn things around to get supporters onside, will know that.

Despite that, some of Rangers’ players have stepped up and shown the fans that they are good enough and willing to fight to bring glory to Ibrox, including summer signing Vaclav Cerny.

Vaclav Cerny's form this season

The Czechia international was signed on a season-long loan from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in the summer transfer window and has not had the smoothest of starts to life in Glasgow.

In a win over Hibernian in September, some supporters got on his back for not passing the ball forwards and he bit back at them on the pitch, before being substituted shortly after. Cerny has since come out and apologised for his reaction and acknowledged that fans just want to see progressive and forward-playing football.

Vaclav Cerny

Since that moment, the left-footed forward has established himself as a fan-favourite and got the supporters back on his side by producing a number of fantastic performances for the Scottish giants.

He has racked up seven goals and five assists in 19 appearances in all competitions for the Light Blues, including two goals and two assists in four outings in the Europa League.

As you can see in the table above, Cerny caught the eye with a strong performance against Dundee United in the 1-1 draw at Ibrox on Saturday, scoring the equaliser in the game.

His eight key passes were impressive but none of them represented a ‘big chance’ for the player taking the shot, which suggests that the quality of chances he created were not particularly high.

Whilst Cerny has provided a burst of attacking quality in recent weeks, as a scorer and a creator, another player has stepped up to be Clement’s main man in the middle of the park – Nicolas Raskin, who has had his struggles in a Gers shirt.

Nicolas Raskin's struggles for Rangers

The Belgian central midfielder joined the Scottish giants from Standard Liege on a permanent deal in the January transfer window in 2023, at the same time as Todd Cantwell.

In his first five months in the Premiership, Raskin failed to hit the ground running with consistently impressive performances for the Light Blues. He registered zero goals and one assist in 12 league appearances and made 2.3 tackles and interceptions per game, which shows that he was not exceptional in or out of possession.

The Rangers number 43 then struggled for fitness in his first full season at Ibrox. He missed a whopping 22 matches through injury in the 2023/24 campaign, which meant that the young whiz only made 18 appearances in the Premiership.

As you can see in the table above, Raskin’s form did not improve too much in comparison to his first five months in Glasgow, as he struggled to stand out on or off the ball for Clement or Michael Beale.

The 23-year-old gem then missed the first nine games of the current season through injury and, because of his stop-start career at Rangers, supporters may not have expected much from him this term.

Nicolas Raskin's emergence as Clement's main man

The Belgian dynamo has emerged as a starter in recent weeks and his exceptional performances on the pitch show that he is becoming the manager’s main man.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Last year, former Standard Liege boss Luka Elsner hailed the midfielder in an interview with Rangers Review. He said: “Nico is able to bring fire to a game by himself and always gives his best. For me, those are the qualities that stand out and make him some kind of special player.”

Raskin is finally living up to that high praise and is bringing the ‘fire’ to the game with his dynamic and combative displays for Rangers this season.

Despite only starting two of his four appearances, the 23-year-old star is averaging more tackles per game (4.3) than any other Gers player in the Europa League this term, which speaks to his quality out of possession.

He also lead the team in tackles per game (3.1) in the Premiership and this suggests that Raskin is the best player at the club at breaking up play and winning possession back for the side.

As you can see in the table above, the former Liege maestro has significantly outperformed summer signing Connor Barron as a defensive force in the middle of the park, whilst offering a similar level of reliability in possession with his passing.

The midfield metronome has also completed 1.4 dribbles per game, with a success rate of 72%, and this shows that he can drive the team forward in transition to push the team up the pitch.

Overall, Raskin is impacting games in all phases by being outstanding defensively, reliable in deep possession with his passes, and a threat in transition as a dribbler, which is why he is Clement’s main man right now.

Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals focus on top-two finish

Big picture

There isn’t a great deal of jeopardy in the contest. Both Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals have qualified for the playoffs but there is the small matter of confirming a place in the top two, which offers an extra shot at a place in the IPL final.A scrappy victory over the defending champions, led by their former captain, may well be just the kind of tonic the Capitals need as they move into the final stretch of the IPL. Mumbai Indians were in full-on fightback mode on Saturday but Shreyas Iyer weathered the blows like a grizzled old pro who knew just when to go for the KO. This team already has a great pair of openers and a phenomenal bowling attack. Now they’ve found their middle-order marshal.

Super Kings also learned a valuable lesson, albeit in a loss to Rajasthan Royals. After going down in that high-scoring game, they will be better informed about what to do and what not to when batters come at them as hard as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube did.

In the news

Marcus Stoinis has spent three games on the sidelines as a result of injury. It is as yet unclear if he has recovered well enough to take part in tomorrow’s match.1:52

Has R Ashwin underperformed this IPL?

Likely XIs

Chennai Super Kings: 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Moeen Ali, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Dwayne Bravo, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Josh Hazlewood/Sam CurranDelhi Capitals: 1 Prithvi Shaw, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Steven Smith, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 Rishabh Pant (capt & wk) 6 Shimron Hetmyer, 7 Axar Patel, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Avesh Khan

Strategy punt

  • Prithvi Shaw is a destructive batter, when the ball comes down perfectly straight. Bowlers capable of moving the new ball have troubled him in the past. So he might want to be off strike when Deepak Chahar has the ball. The head-to-head reads 55 runs off 50 balls and five dismissals.
  • South Africa may not want him in their T20 side anymore but Faf du Plessis is among the first names down on the Super Kings team sheet. He sets the tone for their entire innings, so taking him out assumes top priority. Enter R Ashwin (45 runs off 45 balls, three dismissals) and Kagiso Rabada (31 off 28, three dismissals). Capitals will do well to open the bowling with this pair.

Stats that matter

  • Super Kings have been the best six-hitting team in the IPL. They have cleared the ropes 96 times with Ruturaj Gaikwad topping the list of players (20) with the most maximums this season.
  • Shikhar Dhawan appeared invulnerable in the India leg of the tournament, averaging 54 and striking at 134. But after four matches in the UAE, those figures have gone down to 20.5 and 114.
  • The Delhi franchise is one shy of 100 wins in the IPL.

Cristiano Ronaldo's new strike partner? Al-Nassr open talks over Victor Boniface deal with Jhon Duran also targeted ahead of Anderson Talisca's exit

Talisca is said to be on his way out of Al-Nassr after spending almost four years with the Saudi Pro League side after having joined them in 2021 from Guangzhou Evergrande. As per reports, the Brazilian has agreed to join forces with Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce. As such, Al-Nassr are now looking to sign a striker to partner with Cristiano Ronaldo as the Portugal captain's hunt for his first trophy with the Saudi Arabian club continues.

As per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Al-Nassr have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen's Boniface regarding a potential summer move to Saudi Arabia. The Nigerian striker has shown a lot of promise under Xabi Alonso over the last two seasons and the Saudi Pro League side believe that Boniface could be the right option to support Ronaldo in attack.

Getty ImagesDID YOU KNOW?

The report has suggested that Al-Nassr also have Aston Villa striker Duran high on the wishlist for the summer but are aware that the West Midlands side are keen on keeping the Colombian striker at the club and will not be willing to enter into any sort of negotiations regarding a transfer fee.

WHAT NEXT FOR AL-NASSR?

Talisca is set to confirm his move to Fenerbahce over the next few days, however, Al-Nassr are not likely to sign his replacement this month as Stefano Pioli has his attack sorted with Angelo, Otavio and Sadio Mane playing behind Ronaldo. However, they will look to make new signings in the summer with Boniface likely to be their number one target.

Lost the ball 13x: Clement must boldly ditch Rangers star after Malmo

Glasgow Rangers delivered arguably their most complete performance of the season in their 2-0 win over Malmö.

The Europa League victory saw the Light Blues dominate from start to finish, with the only complaint being that there should have been another three or four goals added to the final total.

Three points is all that matters, however, and Philippe Clement will be hoping the momentum can carry forward onto Sunday, as they face Hibernian in the Premiership.

Due to the short turnaround, the Belgian may make a few changes to his starting XI. Despite the good display, there was one player who wasn’t quite at his best – Vaclav Cerny.

Vaclav Cerny’s game in numbers vs Malmö

The Czech winger joined on loan for the season from Wolfsburg, already scoring once and grabbing two assists in eight games prior to the Malmö clash.

He was deployed in his favourite right-wing position against the Swedish champions yet couldn’t quite find the spark that he has shown in previous games this term.

The winger failed to score, register an assist or even make a key pass during his time on the pitch. He also missed a big chance while taking two shots that were both off-target, summing up his evening.

Cerny won only three of his eight total duels while losing possession 13 times and was eventually replaced by Ross McCausland.

The Northern Irishman capped off an impressive cameo by scoring the second goal of the match with a neat finish off the post.

The question for Clement now is, will Cerny start on Sunday? Or is there other options ready to step in for the league tie?

Why Clement could drop Cerny for Hibs clash

If the Czech star is dropped from the starting XI, McCausland is the prime candidate to replace him.

The youngster hasn’t quite had the same opportunities this term due to Cerny’s arrival, but he has scored twice in all competitions for the Gers.

McCausland has started only twice all season, with those coming in the Champions League qualifiers against Dynamo Kyiv.

Despite averaging just 33 minutes per match in the Premiership, the 21-year-old has succeeded with 50% of his dribble attempts, won 53% of his total duels, averages 1.7 shots and 0.7 key passes per game, showing that he likes to make an impact during his limited time on the pitch.

With rotation going to be key for Clement, this could see McCausland make his first league start of the campaign against the Easter Road side this weekend.

Given his impact from the bench in midweek, perhaps Clement will stick with a tried and trusted XI that got the job done in Sweden.

The main focus will be securing all three points, especially as the Gers are trailing both Celtic and Aberdeen in the race for the league title.
