3 dream wingers Sunderland could sign if they need to replace Jack Clarke

Sunderland would be doomed if they didn't have Jack Clarke to rely upon in their side, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur dud the first name on Michael Beale's Black Cats teamsheet week in week out currently.

Scoring 13 times this campaign for the underwhelming promotion hopefuls, which has included three strikes in his last five games, the ongoing transfer rumour mill suggests the electric 23-year-old is being lined up for a move up a division off the back of a fantastic individual campaign so far.

Beale could well have a list of replacements for the Sunderland star-man in his back pocket as a result, with these three names coming to mind as potential faces to come in to replace Clarke this month…

1 Liam Millar

Formerly on the books at Liverpool, Liam Millar's loan spell away from current parent club Basel with Preston North End this campaign has certainly caught the eye of Beale's promotion hopefuls.

Just this weekend gone, the Canadian winger terrorised Archie Gray all game for Ryan Lowe's outfit in a slim away day defeat versus Leeds United – the Preston number 23 only needing 32 touches of the ball at Elland Road as he assisted Preston's shock early opener.

The 24-year-old attacker caused Daniel Farke's men even more havoc in the reverse fixture just last month, scoring a stunning solo strike to win the game 2-1 with a number of Leeds shirts just standing back for Millar to unleash a sensational curled effort.

What may also interest the supporters at the Stadium of Light is comparisons to former Black Cat Aiden McGeady, with PNE skipper Alan Browne saying in December: "I don't think we've had someone similar to that, probably since (Aiden) McGeady in terms of one-v-one. We've had some pace and got past players that way, but to actually have that skill to go past a player – it's quite rare in football now actually. "

Noted as being interested in the breakout Preston star according to football journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon – the ex-Liverpool youngster now onto five goals and six assists in all competitions this season so far – Sunderland could view Millar as a signing worth making to soften the blow of Clarke leaving.

2 Amad Diallo

Amad Diallo for Sunderland

It wouldn't be a proper transfer window without the Black Cats being linked with a move for Amad Diallo in some capacity, a heartfelt reunion with the former on-fire loanee always seemingly on the cards.

A recent report from TEAMtalk indicates that this window will be no exception to that rule, with the Manchester United trickster only wanting a move away from Old Trafford this month if he can return back to Wearside despite further interest from Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough.

Diallo could fill the void left behind by Clarke perfectly, the fringe Red Devils figure a different beast when playing at the Stadium of Light compared to his constant presence on the periphery at Old Trafford.

Not suited to filling in down the left wing arguably, with the attacker more adept at playing down the right-hand flank, Diallo's unpredictability on the ball and desire to excite the Sunderland faithful means he's a Clarke-style player – the 21-year-old forward helping himself to 14 goals and four assists during his first spell with the Black Cats which even saw teammate Luke O'Nien describe the Ivorian winger as "incredible".

Is it time for Diallo to finally put pen to paper on a joyful homecoming?

3 Kwame Poku

Kwame Poku for Peterborough United.

In the same ilk as Diallo, Sunderland could opt to sign another dangerous winger in Peterborough United star Kwame Poku who fits the bill of Clarke but predominantly operates down the right channel.

Attracting interest from the Premier League according to Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony, Sunderland could make a statement signing by purchasing the 22-year-old attacker this January.

On 18 goal contributions in total for the League One promotion candidates in all competitions this season, the former Colchester United forward has also shown glimpses of his ability to play up a level in the second tier with a further two assists from 20 Championship appearances managed across his career to date.

Linked with a move for Poku in November last year according to TEAMtalk, alongside the likes of Kieran McKenna's Ipswich Town also showing signs of interest, the Black Cats could well reignite their intrigue in the Posh star this month if Clarke exits.

Women's exhibition T20s set to include players from West Indies, South Africa, Sri Lanka

The women’s T20 exhibition games, scheduled to be held during the IPL 2019 playoffs, are set to involve overseas players from as many as six countries, an improvement on last year’s one-off Women’s T20 Challenge, which saw representation only from Australia, England and New Zealand, apart from current India regulars. Some of the top women’s international players likely to be invited for the three-team tournament include West Indies’ Deandra Dottin and T20 World Cup-winning captain Stafanie Taylor, South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk and fast bowler Marizanne Kapp, and Sri Lanka’s Chamari Atapattu. The overseas players – all prominent names in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and the English Kia Super League (KSL) – are likely to be grouped with players who had participated last year, including Australia’s Meg Lanning, Ellyse Perry, Alyssa Healy and Megan Schutt, New Zealand’s Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine, and England’s Danielle Wyatt.ALSO READ: Women’s games during IPL 2019 – what’s the best way forward?ESPNcricinfo understands the three teams will square up against each other in one round-robin league, with all fixtures likely to be held at a single venue for logistical reasons. Chennai, which is likely to host the IPL final on May 12, could stage the final of the women’s tournament, too.The planning around these exhibition matches during the IPL has taken over four months. Staging a full-fledged domestic women’s T20 league in India – in the manner of the eight-team WBBL or the six-team KSL – however, was deemed implausible from the outset given the concerns of the BCCI’s think-tank over the depth of India’s domestic pool of players.Last year, the one-off Women’s T20 Challenge in Mumbai was played as a curtain-raiser to the first IPL 2018 Qualifier, and comprised two teams – the Supernovas and the Trailblazers – that featured Indian and prominent foreign players. The match was conducted as a means to test the feasibility of starting an IPL-style women’s T20 league in the country. Although the game was a last-ball thriller and was telecast by the board’s host broadcaster, the crowd presence at the venue was thin, partly because the game had a 2pm start.

Cucurella hair pull, Diaz disaster: VAR’s worst decisions yet

Yet again, another weekend passes with VAR unfortunately making the headlines…

Wolves were on the end of another debatable decision or two this past weekend, with Gary O'Neil once again bemoaning the use of VAR to hand Fulham two spot-kicks and fail to send at least one of Marco Silva's men off.

Previously, Newcastle United's recent 1-0 victory over the visiting Arsenal was littered with controversial decisions. Firstly, Kai Havertz's forceful challenge on Sean Longstaff was only deemed worthy of a yellow, with some suggesting it warranted a greater punishment.

Bruno Guimarães' clubbing forearm on Jorginho wasn't deemed a red-card offence to the amazement of many, while Anthony Gordon's 64th-minute winner was checked by the VAR for a number of potential offences, though the goal stood. Mikel Arteta was visibly furious in the post-match presser, labelling the decision to award the goal a 'disgrace'.

That chaos spilt over into the following Monday's derby in north London, as Chelsea were on the receiving end of a few controversial decisions.

Tottenham Hotspur's Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero were sent off, but both could have been given their marching orders a lot earlier in the fiery encounter, as the pair perhaps warranted red cards for serious foul play and violent conduct respectively.

So, after a pretty hectic weekend in the Premier League, the spotlight is once again on the division's officiating.

That has led Football FanCast to create a list of some of the worst VAR decisions since the start of last season. It seems a new low is being set this year!

16 Soucek handball incident vs Chelsea

11 February 2023: West Ham 1-1 Chelsea

Chelsea were left incensed after the referee denied their claims of a penalty following a handball in the penalty area by West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek.

Conor Gallagher's low strike looked to be heading on target before Soucek's hand diverted the ball away from goal into the hands of Łukasz Fabiański.

VAR did not intervene to award the penalty to the surprise of many, with Craig Pawson and Neil Swarbrick at fault.

It appears the officials thought the hand was in a natural position and therefore deemed it as not a deliberate attempt to handle the ball.

BT Sport's (now TNT Sports) referee pundit Peter Walton believed it was the incorrect decision.

"The law is quite clear, it actually says unnaturally bigger. VAR clearly thinks the arm was in a natural position to break his fall.

When you analyse it, you can see it's past his knee and then he decides. For me, it's deliberate and I'm disappointed VAR did not give the referee the opportunity to have a second look," Walton said.

15 Estupinan goal disallowed vs Crystal Palace

11 February 2023: Crystal Palace 1-1 Brighton

Brighton left-back Pervis Estupinan had his goal wrongly disallowed due to the offside lines being drawn against the wrong Crystal Palace player.

The video assistant referee who made the error was subsequently withdrawn from the next two Premier League matches he was scheduled to officiate.

The incident was put down to 'human error' in a statement released by the PGMOL.

Lee Mason was the man at fault in this instance.

For De Zerbi's men, that error turned out to cost them three points in the M23 derby.

14 Martinelli disallowed goal vs Manchester United

4 September 2022: Manchester United 3-1 Arsenal

Gunners captain Martin Odegaard nicked possession off Christian Eriksen in the build-up to Gabriel Martinelli's opening goal at Old Trafford last September.

However, the goal was disallowed by VAR, who deemed Odegaard to have fouled Eriksen, which was a controversial call, to say the least.

The referee on the day was Paul Tierney, with Lee Mason the VAR official.

The verdict was later judged incorrect by a panel comprising of three former players, a representative from the Premier League and the PGMOL.

The North Londoners went onto the lose the game by a two-goal deficit but had that goal stood, things could've turned out differently, to Mikel Arteta's frustration.

13 Luiz red card vs Fulham

20 October 2022: Fulham 3-0 Aston Villa

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz was shown a straight red card for violent conduct after clashing with Fulham forward Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The Brazillian was judged to have pushed his head into the Serbian, but his red card was later rescinded and he did not serve a suspension.

The referee on the day was Michael Oliver, with Paul Tierney on VAR.

It capped a rotten night for Steven Gerrard, who was sacked later that evening after his 10-man side fell to a 3-0 defeat to the Cottagers.

12 Henderson penalty incident vs Brentford

5 November 2022: Nottingham Forest 2-2 Brentford

Brentford forward Yoane Wissa rounded Forest's goalkeeper Dean Henderson but fluffed his lines and failed to convert.

However, VAR deemed the United loanee to have brought down the fast-moving Wissa and subsequently awarded the penalty, which Bryan Mbeumo scored.

Henderson's arm remained almost still in the action and it appeared the Bees forward ran into it rather than a cynical foul.

Steve Cooper said after the match: "My feeling on the penalties and VAR is, if the one he's given against us is a penalty, then he has to give four in the game."

The referee on the day was Andre Marriner, with Lee Mason once again on VAR.

11 Mitchell own goal disallowed vs Crystal Palace

3 September 2022: Newcastle United 0-0 Crystal Palace

Newcastle thought they'd taken the lead after Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell turned the ball into the back of his own net. But VAR intervened and ruled the goal out.

Eagles 'keeper Vicente Guaita found himself on the deck after Joe Willock collided into him, however, replays showed that it was Mitchell who pushed the Newcastle player into his keeper.

The referee, who was recommended to the onfield monitor, clearly missed the push as he focused on the contact made between Willock and Guaita.

It was a game that ended goalless, which made it even harder to stomach for Eddie Howe's side. The Newcastle boss gave his thoughts on the controversial decision after the match.

"I disagree with the decision. I thought it should be a goal. I thought Joe was pushed. He is running in and is pushed into the keeper. I am not sure what Joe is supposed to do there. For me it is a perfectly good goal," Howe said.

The referee on the day was Michael Salisbury, with Lee Mason on VAR.

10 Romero pulls Cucurella's hair vs Tottenham Hotspur

14 August 2022: Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Chelsea's left-back Marc Cucurella had his hair pulled by Spurs centre-back Cristian Romero as a corner kick came into the box. It was checked by VAR, but rather surprisingly, they decided against taking action.

The laws of the game do not name hair pulling as a foul, let alone violent conduct, so it is down to the referee and VAR's judgement, who on this occasion saw no wrongdoing.

The Chelsea defender spoke about the incident post-match, saying: "For me, it is too clear in the game, on the pitch. I didn't see it on the TV, the video. I think it's very clear, but this is one error of the referee or VAR."

Thomas Tuchel also vented his frustrations at the VAR blunder: "Since when can we pull hair in a football match? They checked and nothing happened — absolutely ridiculous," the Blues boss said.

It appears the rules may need adding to…

Anthony Taylor was the referee on the day, with Mike Dean on VAR.

9 Digne handball vs Crystal Palace

20 August 2022: Crystal Palace 3-1 Aston Villa

Villa's Lucas Digne was adjudged to have handled the ball inside his own penalty area after Marc Guehi's header struck his arm at close range.

It wasn't initially awarded as a penalty by the on-field referee, but VAR intervened and awarded the South Londoners the spot kick.

It was completely accidental by Digne, who was jumping naturally to try and head the ball clear. Guehi's header travelled all of one to two yards before it struck the Frenchman's arm, leaving him little to no chance of moving it out of the way as he began to land back on his feet.

The decision was later deemed incorrect by the aforementioned independent panel, but that didn't compensate Villa for the goal they conceded as a result…

The referee on the day was Andy Madley, with John Brooks on VAR.

8 Cornet disallowed goal vs Chelsea

3 September 2022: Chelsea 2-1 West Ham United

The Hammers thought they'd clinched a 90th-minute equaliser when Maxwell Cornet fired home a well-struck shot, but a highly-controversial VAR decision ensued, as the goal was disallowed.

In the build-up, Jarrod Bowen was deemed to have fouled Chelsea shot-stopper, Edouard Mendy, but replays showed only the slightest bit of contact.

David Moyes was left seething post-match. "It is a scandalous decision, absolutely rotten from one of the supposedly elite referees," the Irons manager said.

The ruled-out goal sunk West Ham into the bottom three as a result.

The referee on the day was Andy Madley, with Jarred Gillett on VAR duty.

7 Toney goal vs Arsenal

11 February 2023: Arsenal 1-1 Brentford

Ivan Toney's 74th-minute equaliser wrongfully stood after VAR failed to draw the correct offside lines. The officials were focused on whether a block from Ethan Pinnock on Gabriel amounted to an offside.

However, they did not examine Christian Norgaard, who was in an offside position when he delivered the ball for Toney to head home into an empty net.

Mikel Arteta said after the game: "I just looked at it back and it is offside. We'll probably be given an explanation later in the week but today we haven't got any.

"It's too late, the goal was allowed, we dropped two points."

This led to Lee Mason actually leaving his position at PGMOL.

Another blunder that swayed the final result…

England stick with unchanged Test group for West Indies

England have stuck with the players who claimed a historic Test whitewash in Sri Lanka last month in naming their squad for the Caribbean. Ollie Pope, who left Sri Lanka to join up with the Lions in the UAE, misses out and there was no room for Jason Roy, despite speculation he could be included as a spare top-order batsman.Ben Foakes, who was not part of the original party for Sri Lanka but claimed the Man of the Series award after making his debut as wicketkeeper after an injury to Jonny Bairstow, is the only official addition to the 16-man group. In the ODI squad, David Willey returns following injury and Joe Denly is included, having been called up as an injury replacement for Liam Dawson (Denly subsequently won the Man of the Match award in the only T20I against Sri Lanka). Dawson, Sam Curran and Olly Stone, who provided cover for Liam Plunkett in Sri Lanka, are the players to drop out.The conclusion of the ECB Cricket Disciplinary Commission’s investigation into Ben Stokes and Alex Hales after their behaviour on a night out in Bristol in 2017 means that both are included without caveat.England’s 3-0 Test success in Sri Lanka via a brand of attacking batsmanship had led to the suggestion that Roy, a fixture at the top of the one-day order and who featured for the Lions in a four-day game against Pakistan A last month, could be selected for the first time. Denly has however been retained, having been overlooked for a debut in Sri Lanka. The depth available to Joe Root means that England could still field a three-man spin attack, if conditions in the Caribbean dictate, but they also retain plenty of pace options. James Anderson and Stuart Broad, England’s record-breaking new-ball pairing, could be reunited, while Sam Curran, Chris Woakes and Stone can all stake a claim.Bairstow, who scored a century on his first appearance at No. 3 in Colombo, is likely to get a run at the position in three Tests against West Indies, ahead of the 2019 summer’s Ashes.Ed Smith, England’s national selector, said that the Test squad’s success in Sri Lanka merited a continuity of selection, but backed those names that missed the cut to keep pressing their cases for future series.”Jason Roy is a very talented cricketer,” said Smith. “It was great to see him playing so well in the last couple of Championship games for Surrey and he went on to be part of the Lions. We continue to watch his development as an all-round cricketer closely, but we are very happy with the squad we’ve chosen.”On Pope’s absence, having been squeezed out of consideration in Sri Lanka by Ben Foakes’ surefooted debut, Smith added: “Nothing has changed in that he is already a very good player and is only going to get better, and we are very excited at what he can do in an England shirt.”In time he’ll be able to make a claim in all sorts of positions. But we felt, as a selection panel, it was best for him to continue his development in the Lions rather than not get many opportunities in the West Indies.”Next year also promises to be a defining one for England’s one-day squad, as they attempt to win a first World Cup on home soil. Eoin Morgan’s side features a largely settled batting order – barring some competition between Roy, Bairstow and Hales at the top – but there has been some jockeying among the bowlers.Willey missed the last tour with a back problem but has been a consistent part of the set-up since 2015, while Plunkett is fully available again after a clash with his wedding. Mark Wood has also been persisted with, despite one underwhelming appearance in Sri Lanka, with Sam Curran and Stone seemingly slipping back in the race for a World Cup spot. The five-ODI series against West Indies will be followed by three T20Is, for which England have yet to name a squad. They then face Ireland in a one-off game in Dublin, followed by five ODIs against Pakistan to kick off the home season before the start of the World Cup on May 30.England Test squad: Joe Root (capt), Moeen Ali, Jimmy Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Ben Foakes, Keaton Jennings, Jack Leach, Adil Rashid, Ben Stokes, Olly Stone, Chris WoakesEngland ODI squad: Eoin Morgan (capt), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

3 players Clement could sell to fund Rangers’ January spending spree

Glasgow Rangers have enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon spell under Philippe Clement, however, it will be all in vain should they not build upon this platform and aim for success this term.

Since the Belgian took over in mid-October, the Gers have won six and drawn one of their seven matches under his leadership, securing passage into the League Cup final in the process.

The final takes place next month and winning a trophy this early on in his spell at the club will be a major confidence boost, especially as they look to chase down Celtic in the hunt for the Premiership crown.

Having inherited Michael Beale’s squad, Clement will have to make do until January at least, then he can begin to bring in his own targets.

It remains to be seen whether there is a budget for new signings following the lavish spending during the summer, as £6m was spent on Danilo and £4.5m spent on Cyriel Dessers.

There are several players out of contract at the end of the season and the former Club Brugge boss could potentially cash in on a few of them in the next few weeks in order to fund some January transfers.

He may also try and cash in on a few players who might not have the brightest of futures at Ibrox and here at Football FanCast predict the three players the Light Blues could move in the January transfer window…

1 Ben Davies

Ben Davies

The defender arrived from Liverpool last summer when Giovanni van Bronckhorst was in charge, costing around £4m and on the surface, it looked like a shrewd piece of transfer business.

Although he never made an appearance for the Anfield side, Davies had featured over 150 times in the Championship and brought some experience with him to Ibrox.

Safe to say, his move to Scotland hasn’t exactly worked out. Indeed, in the league last season, Davies ranked way down in 16th position across the squad for tackles per game (0.9) along with ranking seventh for interceptions per game (0.8), thus indicating he wasn’t the most positive influence defensively.

He also made a huge blunder during an Old Firm clash in April, falling to clear a ball in the box and former Gers striker Kenny Miller criticised the player, saying: “But it’s so poor from Ben Davies. He should be heading that out.”

Stoke City were linked with a move for him during the summer, and despite nothing materialising, Davies could command a decent transfer fee should Clement decide to sell him in the coming months.

2 Borna Barisic

Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

The Croatian left-back has been a mainstay alongside Connor Goldson and James Tavernier in the back four at the club since the start of the 2018/19 season.

During this period, he has made 218 appearances for the Glasgow side and, despite lacking consistency defensively, his attacking attributes have more than made up for it.

Barisic has registered 52 assists over these 218 matches and his attacking presence down the left wing is something which has helped the club secure a league title and the Scottish Cup over the last couple of years, along with reaching a major European final.

The 31-year-old has entered the final year of his contract at the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign and could this be the last few months that the supporters see the Croatian at Ibrox?

AS Roma are reportedly keen on luring him to Serie A according to TEAMtalk, while Nottingham Forest are another club that will be aiming to secure him on a pre-contract agreement in just a few weeks.

Clement has Ridvan Yilmaz and Johnly Yfeko as left-back options, while Dujon Sterling and Adam Devine can also operate on the left side of the defence.

The Belgian could thus command a fee in January, and he should cash in on the player before it’s too late.

3 Scott Wright

Rangers winger Scott Wright.

Although not out of contract at the end of the current season, Wright only has a deal until 2025 and the next few transfer windows will be the best time to move him on with regard to securing a decent fee.

The winger has been at the Light Blues since January 2021 and during his spell in Glasgow, he has won a Premiership medal, scored a goal to secure victory in the Scottish Cup final and featured in a major European final.

Not bad achievements by any stretch of the imagination, but if Clement wants this Gers side to be a consistent force in Scotland, an improvement on the Scot will be required.

The 26-year-old has netted just nine goals across 94 appearances for the club and went the whole of last season without finding the back of the net.

This led to claims that his future lay away from Ibrox, and he came close to departing, seemingly securing a move to Turkish side Pendikspor, yet the move fell through as he decided to remain in Glasgow and fight for his place at Beale’s side.

A fee of £500k was mooted for his move abroad and if he puts in a few decent showings between now and the transfer window opening, he could secure Clement a decent fee which could be used to sign someone else.

While January represents a risky time to try and add some quality, the Belgian may already have some targets in mind before taking the job, and he could explore whether a move for them is possible or not.

The likelihood is he will have to move on a few of his players before bringing anyone new into the club and the £54k-per-week trio mentioned could probably fetch the largest transfer fees, without perhaps comprising the quality of the squad.

It could be an exciting few months ahead for the club, with a cup final to prepare for and the chance to secure European football after Christmas.

Clement has a challenge on his hands to make Rangers the dominant force in Scottish football once again, yet initial impressions are excellent and the Ibrox faithful will be hoping the honeymoon period can translate into a long and happy marriage.
