Faf du Plessis under scrutiny after Jos Buttler 'barge'

South Africa’s captain appeared to deliberately walk into opponent during heated confrontation

George Dobell at the Wanderers27-Jan-2020Faf du Plessis, South Africa’s captain, could be in trouble with the match referee after appearing to make physical contact with Jos Buttler on the fourth afternoon in Johannesburg. With du Plessis and Rassie van der Dussen batting together for more than 30 overs on a brutally hot day, England appeared to be growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of movement they were generating from the ball and, it seemed, du Plessis’ habit of picking the ball up after playing a stroke and returning it to the fielders. At one stage, du Plessis was hit on the pads by a throw from Sam Curran, who was fielding at mid-on. That appeared to lead to an exchange of words between du Plessis and several of the fielding side. As the players converged, du Plessis appeared to deliberately walk into Buttler before continuing his verbal altercation with Stuart Broad. After the game, with South Africa beaten by 191 runs, du Plessis played down the incident, saying he was just trying to show fight and did not realise he had come into contact with Buttler.”It’s part of my character,” he said. “I am always involved in a little bit of something somewhere in the game. Trying to show that fight as the leader the team, that you don’t stand back. It’s not like I am looking for it. It just happens. He said something to me and I said something back.”I don’t think we knew we touched each other. It was just myself and Broady having a go. He [Buttler] was just trying to get between myself and him. There was no malicious thing. He was trying to diffuse the situation. He didn’t do anything wrong there. It was just words from Broady.”While the contact was far from violent, the ICC’s code of conduct states that “any form of inappropriate physical contact is prohibited in cricket. Without limitation, players will breach this regulation if they deliberately, recklessly and/or negligently walk or run into or shoulder another player or umpire.”Such an incident is considered either a Level 1 or Level 2 offence and carries a maximum penalty of four demerit points, which would also bring an automatic suspension. It may not help du Plessis’ case that he is an experienced player and his side’s captain. As such, the match referee may expect him to set an example.England’s captain, Joe Root, was sympathetic, however, describing it as a moment of “handbags”.”I thought Faf was trying to use it as an opportunity to get himself going and get himself in the contest and my worry was that it was going to work in his favour,” he said. “There was absolutely nothing. It was handbags. Given what’s happened in this series, it may become a big thing but it was absolutely nothing.”Moments after the incident, du Plessis’ miserable series was ended when a delivery from Ben Stokes kept horribly low and ricocheted into the stumps of a bottom edge. It meant du Plessis had failed to reach 40 in the entire series and took his side close to a 3-1 home defeat. Speculation is rife that this will be du Plessis’ final Test as captain and possibly his final Test as a player.”It happens, that’s not me outside my bubble,” du Plessis added. “It just got a bit heated. That’s not out of my character. If you say something towards me, I will say something back. It doesn’t cause me to concentrate less. They got a ball to stay low.”Buttler attracted the ire of the South Africa players for abusing Vernon Philander earlier in the series. Buttler was fined 15% of his match fee and received one demerit point for the episode. Philander, Stokes and Kagiso Rabada have also been punished for disciplinary issues during the Tests.

Aston Villa star with 33% pass success was worse than McGinn vs Spurs

Aston Villa lost a huge clash in the race to secure Champions League football as they were hammered 4-0 at home by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The hosts kept the game tight and had chances to test Guglielmo Vicario throughout the game before Spurs eventually took the lead in the 50th minute through James Maddison.

Brennan Johnson quickly made it 2-0 to Tottenham with a close-range finish before John McGinn saw red for a rash challenge on Destiny Udogie ten minutes later, which made the rest of the match an uphill battle for Villa – who went on to concede two more in stoppage time.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery during a Premier League game.

Whilst the Scotland international let Unai Emery down with that poor tackle on the Italian full-back, the rest of McGinn's performance was, frustratingly, very good.

Whereas, Jamaica international Leon Bailey struggled badly throughout the match at the top end of the pitch and was even worse than his captain.

John McGinn's stats against Spurs

The Scottish dynamo was a workhorse in the middle of the park before his red card as he provided creativity and steel for the Villans to keep them in the match.

Unfortunately, his good work was then undone by the sending off as he gave the referee a decision to make with a needlessly rash tackle on Udogie, which let his side down.

As you can see in the table above, McGinn offered quality in possession, with three chances created for his team, and combativeness with 11 of his 16 duels won.

Bailey, meanwhile, was substituted just four minutes after the sending-off and contributed with far less in and out of possession in comparison to the skipper.

Leon Bailey's stats against Spurs

The former Bayer Leverkusen star was far from at his best against Ange Postecoglou's side as he struggled on and off the ball throughout the game.

Spurs defenders found it far too easy to get the better of him in physical contests as they collectively won five of their seven duels – three of five on the ground and two of two in the air – against the winger.

This shows that the Villa forward did not hold the ball up well enough for his team as the Tottenham players beat him in the majority of their battles.

Leon Bailey

The lightweight dud also left a lot to be desired with his play in possession of the ball. He only completed 33% (4/11) of his attempted passes and created just one chance, compared to McGinn's aforementioned 86% pass accuracy and three chances created.

This shows that Bailey was significantly worse on the ball than the Scottish whiz, as he gave up possession far too easily throughout the game and created very little.

Towards the start of the second half, the 26-year-old gem had a terrific opportunity to flash the ball across goal for Ollie Watkins to potentially have a tap-in, but blazed his effort over the bar and behind for a goalkick and prevented his team from getting back into the match.

Overall, Bailey's big struggles in and out of possession show that he was even worse than McGinn, who impressed at both ends of the pitch before the red, as he let Emery down badly in the final third.

Desde 2017 o time do Alfredo Jaconi não vence o Colorado.

The signing Beale could make to replace Huggins at Sunderland

Sunderland will hope that a soul-crushing defeat in the Tyne-Wear Derby doesn't derail their Championship campaign, Michael Beale's side unbeaten in their last three in the bread and butter of the league before a reality check was handed out courtesy of their arch-nemesis Newcastle United in the FA Cup.

The full-backs in the 3-0 Magpies humiliation let Sunderland down big time, especially down the left-hand side of the Stadium of Light turf with Aji Alese looking uncomfortable and tense which resulted in the stand-in defender giving away possession 15 times and only winning a solitary duel in the game.

With Niall Huggins sidelined potentially for the entire season, on top of Dennis Cirkin suffering a setback recently in his recovery from injury, the priority for the Black Cats this month should be to recruit a new left-back and Beale could well have found his desired man according to reports.

Sunderland transfer latest – Bogdan Mykhaylichenko

Sunderland are reportedly interested in adding another Ukrainian to their ranks this month in the form of Bogdan Mykaylichenko, the current Dynamo Zagreb defender linking up with fellow compatriot Nazariy Rusyn on Wearside if a deal was pulled off.

Bizarrely – as reported by Croatian newspaper Rijeka Danas – Mykhaylichenko's current contract with the Croat giants could be terminated owing to the full-back using his phone in the dressing room after a recent Zagreb defeat.

Ukrainian journalist Ihor Burbas has further added fuel to the fire by confirming that Sunderland are very much keen on adding the 26-year-old to their squad for more numbers in the left-back area according to reports, via Sport Witness.

The controversial defender has divided opinion in Croatia, but based on his Anderlecht and Shakthar days prior to this switch to Zagreb, Mykhaylichenko would be a shrewd and worthwhile acquisition to help out Trai Hume on the opposite flank with creativity and flair in abundance and fill in for Huggins competently.

Mykhaylichenko's style of play

Criticised by his manager Sergej Jakirović for his attitude at the club, Beale and Sunderland can offer Mykhaylichenko an escape and a way to let his football do the talking again.

The 26-year-old has a pedigree that the Black Cats would love to have in their squad, picking up two assists in the Champions League for Shakhtar in back-to-back contests up against Real Madrid even when playing at the Santiago Bernabeu back in 2022.

In total, over his full career to date, Mykhaylichenko has amassed 16 assists from the left-back spot whilst also fancying himself going forward with eight goals scored next to his name.

In fleeting appearances for Zagreb this season, the current number 15 has also shown his prowess teeing up teammates to score – registering two assists in the UEFA Europa Conference League back in September last year versus FC Astana, despite only being on the pitch for a mere ten minutes.

The wantaway full-back could complement the Sunderland system perfectly and fill in for Huggins, giving Beale's men even more drive and energy down the wings alongside Jack Clarke's vibrant displays on his same flank and then Hume on the opposing channel.

The Northern Irishman's vigour has been crucial for the second tier playoff chasers this campaign, winning 3.06 tackles per 90 minutes on average over the last year according to FBRef as a hot-headed and aggressive figure.

It was evident in one tussle with Newcastle player Anthony Gordon in the Tyne-Wear Derby, Beale wanting more passion from his side and for more wins to be tallied up as a result so to maintain a playoff spot.

Mykhaylichenko's potential deal to come into the club feels like a win-win situation, risk-free as it's a free transfer deal and could offer Sunderland yet another attacking outlet to overwhelm Championship defences on their way to a potential promotion.

It would also soften the blow of Huggins being in the treatment room for the foreseeable future, allowing Beale fewer selection headaches subsequently.

Sky journalist drops "news" on Man Utd interest in Joshua Zirkzee

Manchester United twice led against Spurs at the weekend, and twice they were pegged back. Manager Erik ten Hag will nonetheless be pleased to signs of life from an attack that scored multiple goals for just the seventh time in 21 Premier League matches this season.

Even after an improved showing, United have still recorded the fewest goals (24) of any side in the league's top 13, and they have the poorest goal difference (-5) of any team in the top 11. £72m summer signing Rasmus Hojlund has only been able to find the net twice in 16 league outings so far, and United would be wise to recruit another striker who can take the pressure off him. Those efforts, it seems, are already underway.

United make contact over Zirkzee

According to Sky Sport Germany's Florian Plettenberg, United have enquired about Joshua Zirkzee at Bologna. Recruitment staff at Old Trafford have "a high opinion" of Zirkzee in light of what he's done this season, and they've listed him as a target for 2024.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

"Talks took place" over a possible deal, but the Red Devils learned that "Bologna won't let him go" during the winter window. Come the summer, however, it could be a different story, with a €40m release clause (the equivalent of about £34m) due to come into effect.

"Graceful" Zirkzee gives United clinical touch

Zirkzee joined Bayern's academy in 2017 and, after loans at Parma and Anderlecht, he resettled at Bologna in 2022. His first year was quiet – he only started five league games and scored two goals – but he's enjoying a breakout season in 2023/24. He's bagged seven goals and set-up two more, form that had seen him start every single league game prior to a yellow-card suspension last time out.

Compatriot Rafael van der Vaart says the "very graceful" Zirkzee is "not normal", and European football expert Alex Barker has warned that he'll be a "terrifying" proposition if he maximises his potential. Journalist Zach Lowy, meanwhile, reckons he'll be "one hell of a bargain" if he leaves for £34m.

The numbers illustrate why. As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old is among the most prolific forwards in Serie A this season, and he's reached seven goals from an xG of just 4.5, which points to the clinical touch that United sorely need.

Serie A's player of the month for both November and December, it seems like only a matter of time before he earns a call-up to the senior Dutch national side, and it's not too late for him to play his way into their squad for Euro 2024

United should be wary of his former club Bayern, who negotiated a 50% sell-on clause as part of the sale agreement with Bologna. That means they're able to buy him back for €20m, and they might see that as a smart business move, because they'd be able to sell him on again for a significant profit.

Reporter hints at "huge" Spurs boost after Son and Sarr contract update

Tottenham may be in line for a "huge boost" behind-the-scenes if internal contract reports out of N17 come to fruition, says journalist Paul Brown.

Spurs form under Postecoglou this season

Barring a torrid November and some real injury problems this term, it's been quite a debut campaign in the dugout for new manager Ange Postecoglou.

Super agent "taking care" of Spurs transfer for player after £60m discount

Tottenham could grab a bargain this winter.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 19, 2023

The Australian, following his arrival from Celtic in June, made the best start of any new manager in Premier League history – winning eight out of his opening 10 top flight matches in charge.

His aggressive, high-octane style has won over both supporters and critics for the most part as Spurs contend for Champions League qualification. The feel good factor around Tottenham, and renewed faith in their manager, is a far cry from Antonio Conte's regrettable last few months in charge of the Lilywhites.

One of their star players in this period, Destiny Udogie, was recently awarded with fresh terms and a brand-new contract running until 2030. There have been reports that Spurs could tie down Son Heung-min after the Italian, with Postecoglou's captain really taking the mantle superbly from Harry Kane.

Fabrizio Romano has also suggested that young midfielder Pape Matar Sarr is in line for a new and improved deal as well. The 21-year-old is shining as one of Tottenham's surprise success stories of the campaign, often partnering the likes of Yves Bissouma to great effect in midfield.

Journalist moots "huge" potential boost after Son and Sarr news

Reporter Paul Brown, speaking to GiveMeSport this week, mooted a "huge boost" for Spurs if they do manage to secure both Son and Sarr to new deals.

The Tottenham duo are imperative cogs in Postecoglou's fluid attacking system, and Brown believes Spurs won't have an issue sealing new deals for Sarr and Son.

richarlison-heung-min-son-tottenham-opinion

“They’ve both become really important players for Spurs. I don't think anyone saw just how important Sarr would become, but Son was always going to be a key player once Kane left," said Brown to GMS.

“I think being able to tie them both down long term would be a huge boost for Spurs and it doesn't look like that's going to be an issue, as they're both happy there. You can see that under Postecoglou players are playing with a smile on their faces again and I think getting them to sign long-term won't be an issue really."

After a difficult 2022/2023 under Conte, Son has especially found a new lease of life playing both out wide and more centrally at points this season. The 31-year-old appears to have rediscovered his panache, with Postecoglou praising the South Korean on more than one occasion.

“He’s been outstanding as a leader and as a player," said Postecoglou after his north London derby heroics in 2-2 draw.

“I’m so happy for him. When I talk about that great environment with the players, Sonny is leading that with Madders and Romero.”
