Fewer touches than Butland: Clement must drop 13-pass Rangers dud

Glasgow Rangers suffered heartbreak in the Europa League on Thursday evening, with Philippe Clement’s side conceding a late Bruno Fernandes goal as Manchester United secured a 2-1 victory.

The two sides were aiming for three points to boost their chances of finishing in the top eight, thus securing a spot in the last 16.

Man United scored first courtesy of a Jack Butland howler, and it looked as though the Old Trafford side were cruising to victory.

However, with just two minutes of normal time left, a mistake by Harry Maguire gave Cyriel Dessers a sniff. Often guilty of profligacy, the striker took one touch, before firing a shot devastatingly into the corner of the United goal.

Despite this, there was more late drama as Fernandes got on the end of a cross to score what turned out to be the winner.

There were a few decent performances by the away side, while a few youngsters managed to secure some game time.

Rangers' biggest underperformer against Man United

While it was Butland who scored an unfortunate own goal against his former employers, he wasn’t the main culprit at Old Trafford, far from it.

One of them was full-back Jefte who with the clock running down, switched off at the back post and allowed that man Fernandes to ghost in relatively unmarked and find the back of the net.

It was never going to be a game full of chances for the Gers but Clement will no doubt find himself disappointed with some of the forwards, most notably Nedim Bajrami.

The Albanian looked like an interesting signing when he joined the Ibrox side last summer. He has often played out of position on the left wing during his first few months due to injury issues with other members of the squad.

Across all competitions, Bajrami had scored four goals and grabbed four assists, but given how much the Gers paid for him, this figure should be higher.

Jack Butland

Against United, Bajrami was utilised as an attacking midfielder, operating directly behind Hamza Igamane and if there was a game to prove to the supporters that he belonged in the team, this was it.

Unfortunately, he was arguably one of the poorest players in the team on Thursday evening. The former Sassuolo man completed just 13 passes during his time on the pitch, while taking only 25 touches – two fewer than Butland – proving how little he was involved.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The midfielder also gave the ball away seven times in what was a dismal performance. Writer Andy Mckellar even claimed that Bajrami was “not offering enough on the ball.”

Who could replace Bajrami in the Rangers side

Given how poor he was against Man United, the Albanian could well lose his place in the starting XI for the clash against Dundee United on Sunday afternoon.

Ianis Hagi wasn’t included in the Europa League squad, but he should be taking over from Bajrami this weekend.

The 25-year-old has been poor for a number of weeks now and considering there are plenty of youngsters such as Bailey Rice, Zak Lovelace and Findlay Curtis knocking on the door, the Albania international will need to improve, and fast.

Despite the loss, a positive display next week in their final European match should see the club secure a place in the knockout playoffs.

Newcastle’s 54-touch man was worse than Isak vs Bournemouth

Newcastle United lost for the first time in 2025 as AFC Bournemouth blew the Magpies away at St James Park this afternoon.

The 4-1 win for the Cherries means Eddie Howe’s men might slip outside the top four in the Premier League depending on other results, and it ends the club’s nine-match winning streak.

Newcastle United managerEddieHowe

Two Justin Kluivert goals had the away side in the lead at halftime, and he completed his hat-trick during the dying embers, before Milos Kerkez scored the fourth to seal a stunning win.

Several Newcastle players failed to perform as they have done in recent weeks, most notably Alexander Isak, who had a poor game.

Alexander Isak’s game in numbers vs Bournemouth

Prior to the game, the Swedish marksman had scored in eight successive Premier League matches for the Toon, including goals against Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool.

He played the full 90 minutes against the Cherries, yet failed to register a single shot, either on or off target, during the game.

Isak completed just 18 passes throughout the game, while winning only three of his seven ground duels contested and lost possession 11 times in what was a rare underwhelming display by the former Real Sociedad man.

Of course, not everyone is expected to be at the highest level every single game, but Howe would have anticipated a livelier performance.

It wasn’t just Isak, however, with defender Valentino Livramento also struggling to contain a vibrant Bournemouth attack throughout the game.

Valentino Livramento struggled vs Bournemouth

The right-back featured for the entire 90 minutes, moving from the right side of the defence to the left after Lewis Hall was subbed off, taking 54 touches during the game.

He was poor on both flanks, however, as Livramento was dribbled past three times, made two tackles, won just one of his aerial duels, and lost the ball 11 times against the Cherries.

Valentino Livramento

Going forward, he wasn’t much better. Indeed, the defender delivered three crosses during the game, but none were accurate, while he succeeded with just one dribble along with failing to make a key pass or create a big chance.

Overall, it wasn’t a display that Howe would have been happy about and he must now ruthlessly ditch the defender from the line-up against Southampton next time out.

Could this see a return to the starting XI for Kieran Trippier? The Englishman has played just 16 matches this term for the Magpies, with only seven of those coming in the starting XI, and the manager must now drop Livramento to bring the experienced ace back in.

Despite this limited game time, the 34-year-old has succeeded with 50% of his dribbles in the Premier League, while averaging an 86% pass success rate and recovering 2.3 balls per game.

The heavy defeat today will force Howe into making some changes for the clash against the Saints. Judging by his performance, Livramento might find himself warming the bench.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was one of Europe’s hottest strikers when Arsenal snapped him up on deadline day in January 2018, and he didn’t disappoint at the Emirates following a record-breaking £56m move in what was Arsene Wenger’s final Gunners recruit.

The former Borussia Dortmund man found the net 92 times in 163 appearances, which is a stunning return, and Mikel Arteta must wish that he had such a potent attacking player in his squad right now.

The Gunners have spent generously in recent years.

ByCharlie Smith Sep 5, 2025 11 Aymeric Laporte Athletic Club to Man City (£57m)

Manchester City boosted their defence in Pep Guardiola’s second season in charge as they romped to Premier League title glory in 2018. Arriving just months after the likes of Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva and Ederson, Aymeric Laporte’s arrival for a club-record fee was a true statement of intent.

The Spain international fully justified the £57m paid to Athletic Club for his services, winning five Premier League titles during a trophy-laden period before leaving at the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

10 Christian Pulisic Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea (£58m)

Christian Pulisic arrived at Chelsea as one of the most exciting young players in Europe, with an enormous amount expected of the American following his £58m switch from Borussia Dortmund. However, it’s fair to say that he never hit the heights many expected.

He is now plying his trade at Milan, where the USA international is enjoying one of his best seasons, as he leads the Rossoneri’s league goals and assists charts at the time of writing, with WhoScored ranking him as their second-best player in Serie A behind Rafael Leao.

9 Khvicha Kvaratskhelia Napoli to PSG (£59m)

Napoli forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia completed a reported £59m move from Napoli to PSG in January 2025, where he will no doubt hope to be their most exciting attacking player since Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar were all at the club.

The Georgian departed despite Antonio Conte’s side being in another title race in Serie A, opting instead to write his own legacy in Paris. His big-money deal is likely worth more than the reported £59m all told, as add-ons were not disclosed at the time of his transfer.

8 Oscar Chelsea to Shanghai SIPG (£60m)

Oscar left Chelsea to join Chinese outfit Shanghai SIPG midway through the 2016/17 season, meaning he missed out on enjoying the Blues’ march to Premier League glory a year after surrendering their crown to Leicester City.

Of course, there may have been more than footballing reasons behind the Brazilian’s decision to up sticks and leave for China, but he did at least bring his former club a cool £60m windfall.

ByCharlie Smith Oct 8, 2025 7 Omar Marmoush Frankfurt to Man City (£63m)

With Manchester City toiling in the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, Pep Guardiola opened his chequebook to sign three big-money players – the most significant of whom being former Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush.

The Egyptian arrived at the Etihad Stadium as a player in red-hot form, with only Harry Kane scoring more goals than him in the German Bundesliga upon his departure.

City’s deal for the forward was for an initial £59m, but this could rise to £63m when factoring in add-ons.

6 Dusan Vlahovic Fiorentina to Juventus (£66m)

Dusan Vlahovic’s big-money move from Fiorentina to Juventus for an initial £58m – rising to £66m – was seen as a significant piece of business when it went through in January 2022, with plenty of teams interested in his signature.

Unfortunately, he has arguably yet to repay Juve fully, with his most recent goal returns for La Viola prior to his switch remaining the most impressive.

Vlahovic netted 20 in 24 in the 2021/22 campaign before the Turin giants got their man; his highest tally for his current club is 18 in 38 appearances last term.

5 Bruno Fernandes Sporting CP to Man Utd (£67.7m)

Manchester United have had an up-and-down time since Bruno Fernandes’ arrival in 2020, but the Portuguese playmaker has consistently stood out as their most reliable attacking player.

The Red Devils captain has registered over 150 goals and assists combined for the Premier League giants, showing what a constant source of end product he has been.

His deal signed in 2020 was for an initial £47m, but add-ons were set to take it to £67.7m.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 2, 2025 4 Virgil van Dijk Southampton to Liverpool (£75m)

Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool

Has there ever been a more influential January signing than Virgil van Dijk? When the Dutchman joined Liverpool from Southampton for a whopping £75m in January 2018, some raised their eyebrows, but he has become one of the greatest centre-backs in history.

Van Dijk has won the Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool, as well as other trophies, and he still feels like his side’s most important player in their title charge this season.

3 Mykhailo Mudryk Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea (£89m)

With all due respect to Mykhailo Mudryk, there arguably hasn’t been a worse value-for-money incoming winter signing in Premier League history. His deal was meant to be worth up to an eye-watering £89m, though it is highly doubtful that £27m of add-ons will come into effect.

The winger has been a huge flop for Chelsea, barring smatterings of quality, and has scored only 10 goals in 73 matches for the Blues, also chipping in with a paltry nine assists.

His career in west London took an even worse turn in December 2024 when he tested positive for a banned substance, suspending him from football altogether.

Man Utd on red alert as January opportunity emerges to sign "fantastic" ace

Perhaps looking to replace Marcus Rashford, INEOS are now reportedly on red alert to sign a Manchester United target who could now leave his current club for free in January.

Marcus Rashford transfer latest: Who could sign the Man Utd star?

Man Utd transfer news

Even amid Manchester United’s disastrous run of form under Ruben Amorim, Rashford’s exile continues to steal the headlines. The Carrington graduate is yet to impress Amorim enough to earn an opportunity and recently admitted that he’s ready for a new challenge.

An exit seems an inevitability at this stage, with the one question left to answer being where Rashford will find himself in 2025.

Whilst that question mark remains, Manchester United must turn their attention towards finding a replacement capable of becoming the star of the show under Amorim – and that’s where one potential opportunity could come into play.

According to The Times, INEOS are now on red alert to sign Dani Olmo for Manchester United if the Spaniard becomes a free agent ahead of the January transfer window amid Barcelona’s failure to gain La Liga’s approval to register their summer signing for the second half of the campaign.

Barcelona’s financial frustration could quickly become Manchester United’s gain in pursuit of the ultimate January bargain.

The Catalan giants are running out of time to win their case to register one of their star men – and he certainly shouldn’t wait around if he’s unable to feature for the rest of the season, especially given the interest already emerging for his signature.

"Fantastic" Olmo would sharpen Man Utd attack

With Rashford exiled, Alejandro Garnacho struggling to impress and the forward pair of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee yet to fully convince, Olmo could emerge to solve Amorim’s attacking problem.

Able to play on either flank and, more crucially for the new manager’s system, in the No 10 role, the Spaniard could offer Manchester United the perfect partner for Bruno Fernandes in the two attacking-midfield roles.

A player with the eye for goal that Zirkzee otherwise lacks, Olmo could be someone who complements Fernandes’ ability, making it too good an opportunity for INEOS to ignore if he becomes available as a free agent in the January transfer window.

Hansi Flick would certainly be a frustrated figure if Barcelona were unable to register Olmo, having told reporters earlier this season (as relayed by Pasion Futbol): “He’s a fantastic footballer. He gives us a lot of balance. What he’s been doing with Pedri is spectacular.”

Now, just halfway through his first season in charge, Flick could be forced to bid farewell to one of his star men as Manchester United look to take full advantage.

£53.5m duo ruled out, Alisson call made: Liverpool predicted XI vs Girona

It is fair to say that Arne Slot’s time at Liverpool so far has been a success. The Dutchman has helped his side reach the summit of the Premier League table, where they find themselves four points clear of second place Chelsea. Of course, they have a game in hand, which will be against Everton following last Saturday’s postponed fixture.

Things are beginning to get hectic for the Merseysiders, with a festive period packed with fixtures. They will play both domestic and European games, with a clash against Girona up next. Impressively, the Reds are top of the Champions League table too, and have been formidable.

Slot’s side are yet to lose a game in Europe so far, after a fantastic start to the competition.

Liverpool’s Champions League record

The Reds have been the dominant side in the Champions League so far in 2024/25. In the competition’s new look format, where you play eight games rather than six, they are yet to drop a single point.

Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher and Virgil van Dijk

So far, Liverpool have played five games and won five games. They have had some tough fixtures, too.

The best win of the bunch was surely the most recent win against Real Madrid, which saw Slot’s side run out 2-0 winners against the current holders of the prestigious trophy. Goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo sealed the win for the Reds.

Their other wins in the competition include a fantastic 3-1 win at the San Siro over Italian giants AC Milan and a 4-0 thrashing over 2023/24 Bundesliga invincibles Bayer Leverkusen at Anfield. It has been a fantastic tournament so far for Slot and his side.

Liverpool’s star individuals have been on fire in the Champions League this season. As per Sofascore, the player with the most goals and assists is, unsurprisingly, Mohamed Salah with five. He has also played the most key passes per game with 2.4 and created the joint-most big chances with four, alongside Gakpo.

The Reds have been imperious this term in Europe and will be hoping to continue their form in Spain on Tuesday night. Slot’s side are set to face Girona away from home, although they will be without a few key players.

Liverpool team and injury news

Before looking at those who will miss the game, it seems like goalkeeper Alisson will be back from an injury that has kept him out for two months. Slot confirmed in his pre-match press conference that the Brazilian goalkeeper will be back in the fold.

He explained that it “is definitely nice to have him back” for their Champions League game in Spain. It remains to be seen if he starts ahead of the in-form Caoimhin Kelleher, who has been a key player in the past few weeks.

Moving on to absentees, the Reds will still be without wingers Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota. Italian international Chiesa, who arrived for a £12.5m fee, will miss the game after reportedly going down with an illness.

Jota, who was signed for £41m, trained with the side this week, after recovering from the chest injury he sustained against Chelsea. However, the clash in Spain has come too early for his return.

There are other key absentees for Liverpool ahead of their clash in Spain. Alexis Mac Allister is suspended for the game after picking up three yellow cards.

There is another injured trio, with Conor Bradley, Ibrahima Konate and Kostas Tsimikas all set to miss the game due to fitness issues. Konate sustained his knock in the famous win against Los Blancos last time out.

Liverpool’s predicted lineup vs Girona

With just one player returning from injury ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Spain, and the fact they had a weekend off, it seems Slot will make minimal changes to the starting lineup against Girona.

Alisson – who Jurgen Klopp previously hailed as the “best in the world” – should well come back into the side despite Kelleher’s impressive form, and Trent Alexander-Arnold should start at right-back once again after he was rested against Newcastle United.

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold

Slot will be forced to make one change, that of Mac Allister due to his suspension. Dominik Szoboszlai seems the most likely player to step into the team alongside Ryan Gravenberch.

Slot might not decide to change the front three that started against, which consisted of Salah, Gakpo and Darwin Nunez. However, given his goal-scoring form in the Champions League, Luis Diaz could come back into the side.

Mohamed Salah celebrates with Luis Diaz

'Naive' Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney sent strong Wrexham transfers warning ahead of potential 'huge step-up' to the Championship

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been sent a “naive” transfer warning as Wrexham look to make history with a third successive promotion.

Hollywood co-owners overseen meteoric riseLooking to make history with third promotionFace big hurdles on road to the Premier LeagueFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Dragons have enjoyed a meteoric rise under the stewardship of Hollywood co-owners, with a remarkable adventure – which has been caught on camera by the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series – carrying them from National League mediocrity to within touching distance of the Championship.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Reynolds and McElhenney have never shied away from the fact that they want to lead Wrexham into the Premier League, potentially with more A-list investors welcomed aboard along the way. Big money has been spent on reaching this point.

WHAT STUART WEBBER SAID

More will be required, though, in order to hit ultimate targets, with the Welsh outfit being advised that there can be no room for sentiment when it comes to squad building. Stuart Webber, who was promoted to the top-flight as sporting director at Norwich and Huddersfield, has told : “The step-up to the Championship is huge, and I think what people have to remember about Wrexham, which has been an amazing story so far, is that some of their players were with them in the National League.

“People don't realise how big the gap is between League One and the Championship: Norwich are mid-table, and 75% of their squad are international players. Outsiders will automatically look at the success of Ipswich, who did the double-promotion, but they did spend a lot of money in League One and brought very good Championship-level players in.

“Wrexham haven't really done that: they've done it on more of a budget. They spent big money to get out of the National League and the same to get out of League Two, but less so this time around, so to expect them to go up and then be super competitive based purely on momentum, it would be quite naive to think that.”

GettyDID YOU KNOW?

Webber added on the challenges that lie in store for Wrexham, with relatively smooth sailing having been enjoyed on the back of a stunning takeover in 2021: “One thing I'd say about the owners is that everything they said they were going to do, they've done.

“They haven't been like fake owners, which often clubs have had, who start off with a load of enthusiasm and then the money runs out and then you never hear from them again. Rob and Ryan have delivered and really connected with the club, but if Wrexham are promoted, I hope the project gets the patience that it needs and they don't get some harsh lessons as a Championship club.”

"Incredible" manager responds to West Ham offer after talks this week

West Ham United have made an offer and held talks with an “incredible” European manager this week as they scour the market for a potential Julen Lopetegui replacement, with the Spaniard’s job hanging by a thread.

Julen Lopetegui battles against West Ham sack with Wolves game crucial

Lopetegui has now been handed the Wolves game on Monday as one last chance to save himself from the Hammers axe, according to multiple reports in the media, and their clash against Gary O’Neil’s side is seen as crucial in determining his immediate future.

The Telegraph claims the Wolves game is seen as a “cup final” to decide Lopetegui’s fate, while it is believed former Chelsea and Brighton head coach Graham Potter is in pole position for the West Ham job if they do decide to part company with the 58-year-old.

In any case, Lopetegui is clinging to his position by a thread, as West Ham reportedly shortlist a number of candidates for their vacant managerial position.

There were reports that Potter was poised to be appointed by West Ham, with Lopetegui “set to be sacked”, but this turned out to be premature. GiveMeSport reporter Ben Jacobs, taking to X, shared the familiar faces on their radar, whilst also lifting the lid on a very young, progressive new name.

Former West Ham backroom coach Edin Terzic is a particularly interesting name, not least because he worked under Slaven Bilic at the London Stadium in an assistant capacity.

The German guided Borussia Dortmund to an unlikely Champions League final against Real Madrid last season, and is out of work, but Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg shared that Terzic won’t be West Ham’s new manager after all.

Edin Terzic rejects West Ham offer in talks to replace Julen Lopetegui

German newspaper Bild, via Sport Witness, have now shared exactly why the 42-year-old won’t be enjoying a homecoming to Rush Green.

It is believed West Ham have made an offer to Terzic, during talks on Wednesday, but he flatly turned down their approach with the Hammers’ proposal not to his liking.

Technical director Tim Steidten and co were apparently refuted because Terzic has his sights set on coaching a team higher than 14th in the table, with the tactician apparently making it clear that he wasn’t interested in succeeding Lopetegui.

The coach is very young and has already made some noteworthy accomplishments in the early stages of his managerial career, including two major trophies at Dortmund, so this could be seen as a real disappointment by supporters.

Noted for his “incredible” work at Dortmund, it appears West Ham won’t be able to turn to their ex-employee in search of a resurgence.

Maresca likely to sell ace who Thiago Silva called "the future" of Chelsea

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is likely to give the green light for his side to sell a player, who ex-fan favourite Thiago Silva interestingly called “the future” of the club.

Players who look set to leave Chelsea in 2025

The writing is on the wall for a few members of Maresca’s squad once we reach the turn of the year, with left-back Ben Chilwell and midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka looking like sure-fire favourites to leave Chelsea.

Chilwell has been deemed surplus to requirements by Maresca, playing just 45 minutes in all competitions this season and failing to make a single Premier League matchday squad under the Italian.

It’s been quite a fall from grace for him considering the 27-year-old once captained Chelsea and featured regularly for the likes of Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel, but injuries have also blighted his time at Stamford Bridge overall.

Chilwell is now attracting interest from clubs in England, Spain and Italy ahead of the January window, and Chelsea are actively encouraging clubs to make a move for the £200,000-per-week defender as they look to get him off their wage bill (Simon Phillips).

Meanwhile, Chukwuemeka is a transfer target for Barcelona, and Italian heavyweights AC Milan have also been linked with the 20-year-old who appears out of Maresca’s long-term plans.

Benoit Badiashile had been tipped to leave as early as January, but Fabrizio Romano and other reliable media sources like GiveMeSport’s Ben Jacobs are now pouring cold water on the Frenchman’s potential exit.

Chelsea officials also have decisions to make on their crop out on loan spells, including Cobham academy graduate and boyhood supporter Trevoh Chalobah.

The Englishman is on a temporary spell at Crystal Palace right now, but the Eagles have no option or obligation to buy him in their deal, so Chalobah is set to return next summer.

Chelsea likely to sell Trevoh Chalobah in 2025

Some reports have even suggested Chelsea could use Chalobah as a makeweight in talks to sign Murillo from Nottingham Forest, with Jacobs sharing his own update on the 25-year-old’s future for GMS.

The reporter claims that Chalobah is likely to be sold by Chelsea next year, with Maresca appearing to see no long-term future in west London for the “impressive” versatile defender, who Silva tipped for greatness back in 2021.

“He is a player who I knew from France where he was playing at a lower level for Lorient, and he’s made the step-up, and he’s playing here because he deserves to,” said Silva on Chalobah.

“Some people said that he didn’t have the ability to do so but he’s made it because of his own capacities. That’s something that makes me really happy because a player like Trevoh Chalobah is the future of this club.”

Maresca unceremoniously axed Chalobah from his pre-season squad at one point, which would’ve left a bitter taste in his mouth, and the tactician looks as if he’ll be sticking to his guns.
