Crystal Palace linked with Calum Chambers

Crystal Palace have been advised to revive their interest in Arsenal defender Calum Chambers this summer by former Premier League striker Marcus Bent.

What’s the story?

The Eagles have been linked with the versatile 26-year-old in recent weeks as Patrick Vieira looks to overhaul his first team squad, while a recent report in The Express has claimed that Chambers is one of several Arsenal fringe players up for sale this summer.

Palace have already bolstered their ranks with several impressive acquisitions, but Bent believes that securing the Englishman’s signature would be another great addition for the south London club.

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, the former Everton ace said: “Calum Chambers is a good player, whether Crystal Palace can get him, they have to look at that, but he would be an amazing signing.”

Patrick Vieira must revive Crystal Palace’s interest

With the departures of Gary Cahill, Mamadou Sahko, Scott Dann, Nathaniel Clyne and Patrick van Aanholt leaving Palace’s backline looking rather threadbare, bringing in someone as versatile as Chambers could solve multiple issues at once.

The Southampton academy graduate is comfortable playing either at centre-back or right-back and has even played a large portion of his career as a defensive midfielder, so he could offer cover and competition in various positions.

With 149 Premier League appearances to his name, Chambers has a good amount of top-flight experience under his belt, but after making just eight league starts last term, it’s perhaps time for him to leave the Emirates Stadium in search of regular game-time.

The report in The Express states that Arsenal are set to demand a £10m fee for the defensive beast this summer, but with his contract set to expire in a year’s time, Palace could secure themselves a bargain deal.

His potential arrival may not cause as much excitement amongst the fanbase as the likes of Joachim Andersen and Michael Olise, but Vieira must still revive Palace’s interest in Chambers ahead of the upcoming campaign.

He would be a pragmatic and practical signing, one who could help to plug several gaps in the first team setup and help steer the south London outfit to a solid Premier League finish next term.

Liverpool fans bemoan Berardi rumours

A number of Liverpool supporters are unhappy about the Reds’ reported interest in signing Italy winger Domenico Berardi this summer.

Last season proved to be a difficult one at Anfield, but Jurgen Klopp’s side ended up saving their campaign with a third-place finish in the Premier League. A number of Reds players failed to hit their usual heights, with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino arguably the most culpable in that respect.

It could be that Klopp believes another wide player needs to come in this summer in order to improve competition for places in 2021/22.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Liverpool are interested in Berardi, and Sassuolo would be willing to sell him for €40m (£34.3m).

The 26-year-old has scored five goals in 14 appearances for Italy and he has played three times at Euro 2020 this summer. However, the one-club man has never played in the group stage of any European club competition, which suggests that a move to Anfield would be quite a step up for him.

Leeds handed transfer update on Matheus Cunha

Beren Cross has delivered a major transfer update on Leeds United’s pursuit of Hertha BSC star Matheus Cunha.

What’s the story?

According to recent reports from German publication Bild (via Sport Witness), Bielsa’s side have already expressed their interest in signing the forward, and that a move could be on the cards after the 22-year-old received approval from Hertha to leave.

And now, speaking on a Facebook Live video, Cross said: “Cunha, yeah I mean I think anybody that’s done a basic level of analysis or read some of the stuff around Cunha will know that he’s a bit like (Rodrigo) De Paul, really, he’s a very exciting footballer – he’s got a lot going for him.

“There’s a lot in his profile which would suggest he would fit Leeds United’s model. But from what I’ve been told, he’s on a long list rather than a shortlist. He’s somebody that they are aware of and they do like but as I’ve said, I think half of Europe is interested as well, and I think his price, if he does move, will skyrocket.”

Great fit for Leeds

Dubbed as “something special” by former Hertha BSC boss Bruno Labbadia, the £55k-a-week earning Cunha enjoyed a superb campaign in the Bundesliga last season, scoring eight goals and providing another eight assists in all competitions.

At 22, he has still got plenty of time to realise his potential, and Bielsa will likely feel that the versatile forward could thrive under his leadership.

Cunha often found himself either playing as the number ten or out wide on the left, but also had a stint up front too, and saved some of his best performances for Germany’s best sides – he scored and assisted against Bayern, bagged a brace against Borussia Dortmund, and also netted against Bayer Leverkusen too.

The Brazilian looks every inch a big-game player, and given his performances last season, will surely have Leeds fans buzzing at the prospect of him linking up with the likes of Raphinha at Elland Road in the Premier League.

Given that supporters have already made their feelings clear about just how excited they would be to see Cunha at Leeds, Cross’ latest update about Leeds definitley having him on a list of targets is a promising one, to say the least.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa’s side have opened talks with this Premier League star…

Spurs now want Ramsdale

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur have now become one of the teams interested in signing Sheffield United keeper Aaron Ramsdale this summer.

The Lowdown: Lloris replacement?

As long-time number one Hugo Lloris’ future hangs in the balance at Tottenham, and with no new deal agreed yet, links will keep emerging to his possible heir.

The Frenchman has been a mainstay for Tottenham since he signed from Lyon in the summer of 2012, making 373 appearances for the Lilywhites in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

His current contract expires at the end of next season, though, with Spurs seemingly contemplating his replacement between the sticks.

The Latest: Spurs now want Ramsdale…

As per the Daily Mail, Spurs are now looking at Blades keeper Ramsdale and could offer him a route back into the Premier League after he was relegated last season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-2/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Named on England’s standby list for Euro 2020, the 23-year-old finished 2020/2021 as, arguably, one of the Yorkshire side’s bright sparks in what was a disappointing campaign.

Wolves are also said to be eyeing a move for the 6 foot 2 Ramsdale but Spurs are now ‘planning’ for life without Lloris as he continues to be linked with a move away.

The Verdict: Good shout?

He has no shortage of praise from both coaching staff at Bramall Lane and big name pundits.

Alan Shearer, for example, told the Premier League’s YouTube channel recently that Ramsdale is ‘strong’ and ‘fearless’ whilst carrying ‘lots of potential’.

Meanwhile, former Blades interim manager Paul Heckingbottom also lauded him as ‘excellent’ for his end of season form (Yorkshire Post).

As a result, we believe he should definitely be considered at the very least – especially given his potentially cheap price tag after Sheffield United’s relegation.

Sunderland dealt Crooks blow

An update has emerged on Sunderland target Matt Crooks, regarding Ipswich’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich are preparing to make a second offer for Sunderland transfer target Matt Crooks this month. The Tractor Boys have already seen an opening salvo of £400k turned down by Rotherham and are now lining up another attempt to prize him away from the Millers.

Last month, Sunderland were named as one of the clubs competing with Ipswich for his signature. Rotherham, however, will need some convincing to part ways with him to a direct League One rival.

Johnson needs him

Kristjaan Speakman must act swiftly in order to land Crooks in the coming weeks/months. Ipswich are clearly seriously interested in completing a deal for him and are showing their ambition by attempting multiple bids for the midfielder.

If the Black Cats continue to drag their heels and opt against getting involved in a bidding war then they could miss out on Crooks  and they will see one of their rivals strengthen their team with a player they wanted, which could be frustrating for fans to see. It would be a transfer blow for the club and their supporters would likely be gutted that a player of Crooks’ quality did not arrive at the Stadium of Light.

Last season, Rotherham boss Paul Warne compared Crooks’ importance to that of Mo Salah’s for Liverpool, with his performances highlighted more than others if things are not going well. He admitted that transfer speculation could have been getting to his head and labelled him as “influential” for the club.

He told The Star:

“I don’t know how many of my players are absolutely 100 percent but I think Crooksy sticks out because he was so influential over the last couple of years.

“If (Mohamed) Salah doesn’t play well for Liverpool everyone notices. With Crooksy, he is getting more like the player we want him to be.

“Has the transfer rumour and anything else that has gone on in his life affected him? Maybe. But that is just an excuse. It might not have.”

The £1.9k-per-week powerhouse could be a terrific addition to Lee Johnson’s side, as he has been able to be influential for a side drifting between League One and the Championship. Sunderland lacked goalscorers from midfield last term, with Chris Maguire’s tally of five the most any midfielder managed outside of penalties, which suggests that Johnson needs a threat in the middle to supplement his attackers.

Crooks managed seven goals in all competitions for Rotherham in the 2020/21 campaign. This suggests that he could be an even greater goal threat in League One as it is a step down from the second tier. Therefore, he could be exactly what the ex-Bristol City coach needs in his midfield.

West Ham source lifts lid on new priority for Moyes

In a teasing transfer development, a West Ham United source has lifted the lid on a new transfer priority for manager David Moyes this summer (Football Insider).

The Lowdown: Moyes eyeing summer deals

As relayed by club insiders Claret & Hugh, Moyes wishes to strengthen his squad with marquee additions and it is believed that the signing of a striker and a permanent deal for Manchester United ace Jesse Lingard are priorities.

Lingard recently returned to his parent club after a phenomenal loan spell with the Hammers during the second half of 2020/2021.

The Englishman racked up nine goals whilst assisting four others under Moyes and there is a belief that the Irons boss is ‘desperate’ to see him return to east London permanently (Evening Standard).

The Latest: West Ham source lifts lid on new priority…

According to Football Insider, an Irons source has claimed that West Ham and Moyes now have an ‘equally big’ transfer priority this summer alongside both the Lingard permanent deal and a new forward.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-updates-copy/” title=”West Ham updates (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, West Ham are now apparently on the hunt for a ‘top level’ centre back with GSB now willing to spend big money to sign one this summer.

Moyes wants a commanding presence to marshal his back four and build his defence around with David Sullivan now ready to mandate scouting for elite defenders who could be tempted by West Ham.

The Verdict: Exciting…

While signing a new defender is debatably not as crucial as bringing in a new striker or Lingard, especially considering the lack of depth up front if Michail Antonio gets injured again, this still comes as an exciting claim.

It could highlight GSB’s ambition to provide Moyes with some strength in depth for the all-important 2021/2022 campaign – a season in which they will be competing in Europe.

A top level centre-half could certainly be a huge boost for West Ham and their manager and the notion West Ham are willing to properly back the gaffer comes as even more exciting.

Everton fans on Anguissa transfer update

Many Everton fans have been buzzing over a transfer update on Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.

As per The Mirror, the Goodison Park club are considering a move for the Fulham midfielder, of whom Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly a big admirer.

He is believed to cost around £25m with two years left on his current deal at Craven Cottage and may seek a move back up to the Premier League if Scott Parker’s team find themselves relegated at the end of the season.

The Cameroon international could well be an upgrade on Everton’s current options in the middle of the park, as he has averaged more interceptions (1.5), shots (0.8) and dribbles (2.7) per game in the top flight than Abdoulaye Doucoure, Allan and Andre Gomes so far this season.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Ghislain Konan links

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to the club’s reported interest in Stade de Reims left-back Ghislain Konan.

According to the Daily Mail, Villa are monitoring the 25-year-old, who is thought to be open to a Premier League switch this summer.

Southampton are also thought to be keen on Konan, who would cost around £5.1m.

The Ivory Coast international has been a regular for Reims this season, making 32 appearances in all competitions. He’s scored twice and provided one assist this season, and should he move to the Midlands, he could provide competition to Matt Targett.

Targett has starred under Dean Smith during the current campaign, starting every league fixture in the 2020/21 season, and was rewarded with a contract extension through to 2025 last month.

Villa fans react

@villareport shared the links to Konan on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon. These fans all seemed to be happy at the update, with one describing the full-back as ‘unreal’.

Pundit backs Fonseca for Wolves job

There is almost an expectation that Bruno Lage will become Nuno Espirito Santo’s successor but Get Italian Football News’ Editor in Chief, Conor Clancy believes that Paulo Fonseca could be a great fit for them.

Fonseca was recently relieved of his duties by Roma almost immediately after Jose Mourinho was on the market following his sacking from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year and he will take charge from next season.

Wolves have a large Potuegese contingent within their squad, eight first-team players to be precise and Fonseca has experience of similar tasks during his time at Shakhtar Donetsk, as they are famous for having a lot of Brazilian players in their ranks.

The Portuguese manager has a history of winning trophies which is something Wolves haven’t experienced for a long time and Clancy believes that he could be a good alternative that Wolves target, he exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“He’s proven how he can work from his time at Shakhtar as they always have a lot of Brazilian players and he won things there. I’d presume that Portuguese is the language of the dressing room or at least some corners of it so I do think that Wolves seems like quite a nice fit for Fonseca.”

After being granted a work permit to move over to England take charge at Molineux, Lage appears to not be far away from being appointed as the club’s next manager, however, Fonseca could be someone that remains on their radar.

Fonseca has been linked with several jobs since leaving his role at Roma, including the vacant roles at both Everton and Celtic which would provide two totally different tasks for him.

Fresh blow to potential Newcastle takeover

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group looking to buy Newcastle United have dealt a fresh blow to the chances of a takeover going through.

As per The Mirror, the KSA consortium has reportedly ‘turned its attentions’ to Inter Milan and is ‘working on’ a deal with the current Serie A league leaders.

Newcastle takeover blow

The news that the group is turning their attentions elsewhere suggests that they are starting to lose interest in a takeover at St James’ Park.

At the moment, there has been no clear pathway made for the KSA’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) to come back onto the table, and it is vital that this happens if the original bid has any chance of coming back into fruition.

There is also the pending arbitration case between Newcastle and the Premier League, which may produce a negative result for the former.

Nonetheless, with the Tyneside club dramatically increasing their chances of avoiding relegation to the Championship with a 3-2 win over West Ham on Saturday, it is likely that talks over a potential takeover for the Magpies will have to resume at the end of the season, especially given the strong interest from the consortium in Inter.
