A Copa da Primeira Liga definiu nesta segunda-feira os confrontos das quartas-de-final da competição, que vão ocorrer no final de agosto. A definição ocorreu em reunião, em Belo Horizonte, com os representantes dos clubes. No encontro também foi debatido mudanças no estatuto da entidade.

Com a definição dos jogos, o destaque ficou para os confrontos entre times mineiros e gaúchos. Já Flamengo e Fluminense vão enfrentar, respectivamente, as equipes Paraná Clube e Londrina.

Após a fase de grupos, oito times ficaram de fora das finais: Brasil de Pelotas, Criciúma, Ceará, América-MG, Chapecoense, Joinville, Figueirense e Avaí.

تلقى فريق الأهلي السعودي صدمة جديد بعد هبوطه لدوري القسم الأول “يلو” وابتعاده للمرة الأولى في تاريخه عن الدوري الممتاز “كأس الأمير محمد بن سلمان”.

وكان الأهلي الملقب بـ”قلعة الكؤوس” قد هبط لدوري يلو للمرة الأولى في تاريخه وهو ما تسبب في صدمة كبيرة لجماهيره ومتابعيه.

وأنهى أهلي جدة الموسم المنقضي من الدوري السعودي في المركز الخامس عشر برصيد 32 نقطة وهبط إلى دوري يلو بصحبة الحزم صاحب المركز السادس عشر برصيد 17 نقطة والفيصلي الذي تواجد في المركز الرابع عشر برصيد 33 نقطة.

وأفادت صحيفة “الرياضية” السعودية، أن عقد شركة “MG” مع النادي انتهى أخيرًا ولا توجد نيةٌ لدى مسؤولي شركة السيارات لتجديده خلال الموسم الجديد.

وأوضحت الصحيفة، أن العقود الاستثمارية والرعاية التي أبرمتها الإدارة، وتبقَّت على نهايتها مدةٌ زمنيةٌ طويلة، لا يوجد فيها شرطٌ جزائي للإلغاء في حال هبوط الفريق إلى دوري الدرجة الأولى، وهو ما حدث بعد احتلاله المرتبة الـ15 بالدوري السعودي.

ولم تتواصل تلك الشركات حتى الآن مع إدارة الأهلي لمخاطبتهم بشأن فسخ العقود، ولكن قد يتم مناقشة الأمر خلال الأيام المقبلة.

Crystal Palace confirmed the signing of Watford midfielder Will Hughes on Saturday afternoon.

And, as to be expected, the transfer news had a number of Eagles supporters talking on social media.

The 26-year-old has become Patrick Vieira’s sixth signing in charge at Selhurst Park and has penned a three-year contract.

Palace have reportedly paid the Hornets an initial £6m for Hughes’ services, with a transfer potentially rising to £10m in the future with add-ons.

The central midfielder rejected a new five-year deal at Watford earlier in the summer and was training with the club’s Under-23’s as his future was up in the air.

Hughes, who can also operate on either flank, has over 300 games of senior football under his belt, with 77 of his appearances coming in the Premier League.

Geoff Lawson has been removed as Pakistan coach, just days after it was announced that he would see out the rest of his contract, ending in August 2009. The announcement came shortly after a meeting he had with PCB chief Ijaz Butt – responsible for the recent public flip-flops on the coach’s future – at which Lawson was told a decision would be conveyed to him by Saturday, following discussions within the board.”Geoff Lawson has been relieved of his duties as coach of Pakistan,” Raza Rashid, PCB spokesman, said. “He will be paid three months’ salary as agreed in his contract in case of termination.” The contract of David Dwyer, the trainer Lawson brought with him, has not been ended though it is understood that he is reluctant to stay without Lawson.Surprisingly, Lawson is believed to have heard of the decision after it became public. In fact, as news emerged, Lawson was on his way to train with some Pakistan players. “I have heard nothing yet from them,” Lawson told Cricinfo at the time. Later, he confirmed receiving a letter from the board informing him of the decision.A PCB official denied this, claiming Lawson “had been informed by the board” when the decision was made public. Earlier in the afternoon Lawson had met Butt for the first time since the former Test player took over as chairman. It is believed Lawson’s performances as a coach weren’t discussed at the meeting.It brings to an end an uncertain experiment, which began in July 2007 when Lawson beat the much-fancied Dav Whatmore to succeed Bob Woolmer as Pakistan’s coach. At the time it was widely thought a number of players in the national side had preferred Lawson, possibly because they were wary of Whatmore’s tougher attitude.The start was promising, as Pakistan reached the final of the ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa in September last year. But from then on problems emerged. A new, unsettled team under Shoaib Malik, an inexperienced captain, lost vital series against South Africa at home and India away. Pakistan’s frontline fast bowlers, expected to prosper under a former fast bowler, were plagued by injuries, and the losses only added to the pressure on the new pair of Lawson and Malik.It didn’t help that 2008, Lawson’s first full year in charge, was a disturbingly barren one for Pakistan. Australia pulled out of a full tour, the Champions Trophy was postponed and Pakistan was left to feed off minnows from Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. The opportunity to mould a team never arose, so that by the time Pakistan lost in the final of a Twenty20 tournament in Toronto, the push to remove Lawson, with a new administration in place, was higher than ever before.Matters weren’t helped by the increasingly tetchy relationship with the local media, where rarely an opportunity went by from either side to have a dig at the other, as well as the previous selection committee, with whom Lawson had several run-ins. Ultimately he was only in charge for 15 months and five Tests.Though it is early still, replacement names have been predictably bandied about, with Javed Miandad once again apparently in contention. Miandad, along with Aamir Sohail, have met board officials in recent days, though Miandad is reported to be in the running for a position in the governing board.Intikhab Alam is also in the running, at least in the short term. “Inti might go along with the team to the Abu Dhabi series in the capacity of coach,” a board official said. “Nothing is certain yet but a number of options are being looked at, including looking at the whole question of whether we need a coach as such.”

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has proposed a two-Test offshore series with Pakistan in November this year, an offer the fixture-starved Pakistan Cricket Board is considering.If agreed, the Tests would take place in Abu Dhabi, after the three-ODIseries between the two sides on November 12, 14 and 16. “We havereceived a proposal from the WICB about two Tests this November,” a PCBofficial told Cricinfo. “Many things have to be considered, such as the TVrights, gate money and so on. We will seriously consider the proposal.”Ijaz Butt, the newly appointed chairman of the PCB, said monetary issues needed to be sorted out before confirming the Test series.”We hope the proposal materialises and we find some sponsor for the Test matches,” Butt told . “We have to pay the West Indies Cricket Board (for the Tests) according to ICC regulations. Time is short, but I am hopeful something positive will come out.”Pakistan are likely to push for the series to happen as they haven’t played a single Test this year. But apart from the financial and logistical factors, they will have to weigh up the impact of playing a Test series once again in a neutral venue.It is territory they have covered before. In the immediate aftermath of9/11 in 2001, a number of teams refused to tour Pakistan for securityreasons. The situation compelled Pakistan to play a two-Test seriesagainst West Indies in 2002 in Sharjah and then against Australia later in the year.Increasing political instability and militant violence over the last 18months has meant that Pakistan finds itself in a similar situation.Australia pulled out of a full tour in March and the Champions Trophy, also scheduled to be played in Pakistan, was postponed to September-October 2009 after a number of teams refused to visit due to securityconcerns. If the series goes ahead in Abu Dhabi, it may well set aprecedent for the immediate future.The previous PCB administration had invited West Indies for a two-Testseries in Pakistan to fill gaps in their Future Tours Programme this November but turned down the offer as they still weren’t convinced about the security situation.

In recent comments cited by Football.London, Patrick Vieira revealed that he and his transfer team have identified that the Eagles are lacking a prolific centre-forward, and are working on completing a deal for a player in the position prior to Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

When asked whether he was planning on bringing a new striker in this summer, the Frenchman said: “Yeah, this is something that we identified a couple of weeks ago, we knew that it would be important for us to reinforce that department, to have more options. The window is still open, and we’re trying to improve that department, and anything can happen.”

Music to the ears of fans

While Palace did manage to score their first two Premier League goals of the season in the 2-2 draw with West Ham United on Saturday, rather than Christian Benteke, Jordan Ayew or Wilfried Zaha finding the back of the net in the fixture, it was on loan Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher who finished the match with a brace.

Indeed, considering the fact that none of the Eagles forwards have mustered a single goal between them over the club’s three league fixtures thus far, it would indeed appear as if Vieira is in need of a fresh face in the position prior to the closure of the summer transfer window.

As such, the Frenchman’s latest comments are sure to come as music to the ears of Palace fans, as, following an impressive result at the London Stadium, the addition of a proven goalscorer before Tuesday could well prove to kickstart their club’s season, having been disappointing over their opening two fixtures of the campaign against Chelsea and Brentford.

However, should Vieira fail in his task to bring in a new striker over the coming days, it could well turn into a long season for both the 45-year-old manager and fans alike.

Carille também voltou a mostrar confiança para o Brasileirão. O treinador acredita que o Corinthians “brigará por coisas grandes” no campeonato e faz planos.

– Vamos brigar por coisas grandes, por objetivos grandes, vaga na Libertadores, chegar nas últimas oito ou dez rodadas lá em cima para não distanciar. Vamos brigar pela parte de cima – projetou Carille.

Opener’s 136 single-handedly holds Notts together for first win of Blast

If you are England, then you habitually look away now. But perhaps the time has come when you shouldn’t. Joe Clarke, who has been easy to ignore since his career went off the rails, played one of the finest T20 innings ever produced in England, an innings so mellow in its destruction that birds might have fallen from the sky, or traffic outside the Northampton ground come to a halt in supplication.Clarke’s 136 from 65 balls, with 11 sixes and six fours, was the eighth-highest T20 score in England and the best by a Notts batter. His 11 sixes have only been surpassed by three players – Graham Napier and Cameron Delport, both for Essex, and Chris Gayle for Somerset. Gayle might have possessed more awe, but surely none of them played with Clarke’s sweetness of touch. In this sort of form, very few do: he is the best England-qualified batter without an international cap in the country.He single-handedly took hold of Notts’ stuttering start to the Blast and guided it into winning territory at the third time of asking. Northants’ innings was the undercard, but they can feel good about getting within 14 runs.They retained slight hopes of chasing down Notts’ 214 for 7 with 87 needed off the last seven overs, and Josh Cobb on 55 from 24 balls, and going long at every opportunity, but then Cobb yanked a hamstring, the offspinner Matt Carter, who was excellent throughout, reasserted control, and from then on it was just a matter of how close they could get.It is worth reminding ourselves after Clarke’s gentle demolition of Northants’ attack that there is not one England batter who is but two. Alex Hales, he of the Johnny Ringo moustache, is the sharpshooter who will probably never escape those “Wanted: Alive or Dead” posters, and appeals for clemency are regularly lodged on his behalf. But Clarke, too, was once England’s golden child, only for his magical adventure to turn into the Golden Child, Eddie Murphy style, a mess of a film which ranks at 22% on Rotten Tomatoes.He does not make light of his mistakes, as he made clear in a revealing interview in ESPNcricinfo last year, and he saw a psychologist last summer to help him further understand that phase of his life and how to respond to it. More pertinent for his batting career, though, might have been a discussion with Peter Moores, Notts’ coach, who told him he was sort of a messed-up version of Marnus Labuschagne.By his own admission, he has missed out on a couple of Championship hundreds that were in the offing this summer, but If the ego of a talented youngster has finally given way to the substance that is found in true quality, then the runs may be about to flow. And England are not exactly drowning in that commodity, not in Test cricket at least. Forgiveness is given most readily to those who are most needed – that’s just the desperate way of the world.Cold statistics illustrate how much Clarke dominated Notts’ innings. His 136 came off 65 balls at a strike rate of 209. The rest of Notts’ batting line-up managed 67 off 57 at a strike rate of 117. Clarke hit 11 sixes; the rest mustered only two more. It was a supreme one-man show.From the second ball, it felt as if he meant business as the left-arm spinner Graeme White was treated to the gentlest of inside-out blows over extra cover, a shot played as if he was carrying out an MOT on his timing. Dropped on 29, he exacted mean punishment. White and the swing (non-existent on this occasion) of Ben Sanderson were most harshly dealt with, with Sanderson conceding three sixes in succession in the 16th over.The first of these blows left Sanderson with hands on hips, as he exchanged a few words of despair with the non-striker, Steven Mullaney. A shimmy across his stumps, followed by the laziest six over midwicket, left Sanderson with hands on knees. The next ball, with the bowler by then disorientated, was a full toss which was deposited over long-on. By then Sanderson didn’t know where to put his hands – or put the ball.Only the South African Wayne Parnell, the one bowler of international quality, escaped punishment – or sixes – and, suitably, he almost pulled off a return catch, on 125, although he was probably just grateful he escaped with his hand intact. He was also caught off Brandon Glover’s waist-high no-ball on 127, a second blemish which saw Glover removed from the attack. He fell in the last over, a nine iron down the ground against Tom Taylor.The rest of Notts’ much-vaunted batting line-up failed to fire, although Peter Trego, promoted up to No. 3 in the absence of Ben Duckett, who did not travel to Northampton as a Covid precaution, did share in an 82-run stand before he became one of a succession of batsman to slog to deep midwicket.Clarke marked his hundred with a beating of his chest – although he did not appear to follow up with some appropriate verses from St Luke about requesting God to be merciful because he was a sinner. It is time for England to be merciful though and to contact him to state, in the clearest terms, that runs are now all that matter.
