Struijk’s red card appeal unsuccessful

Leeds United have been unsuccessful in their appeal against Pascal Struijk’s red card.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by The Athletic, Marcelo Bielsa’s side have had their appeal against the centre-back’s three-game suspension rejected.

The 22-year-old was sent off for a challenge on Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott in the Whites’ 3-0 loss to the Reds last weekend, with the Reds’ star suffering a dislocated ankle as a result of Struijk’s tackle.

The report continued to state that the referee in the fixture, Craig Pawson, informed the FA that the decision to send the defender off was his call, rather than that of VAR, despite having not originally awarded a free-kick for the challenge.

Finally, it is claimed that VAR did review the incident, but decided that Pawson had not made a clear and obvious error in giving the Leeds player his marching orders.

Fans will be fuming

Considering the fact that Elliott himself labelled his injury as an “accident” as well as stating his belief that the FA’s decision to uphold the centre-back’s three-game ban was “wrong,” the fact that the defender will now miss the club’s Premier League fixtures against Newcastle United and West Ham United, as well as their Carabao Cup clash against Fulham, is sure to have left both Marcelo Bielsa and fans of the club fuming.

Indeed, Struijk’s absence will cause something of a selection headache for the Argentine coach, with injuries to both Robin Koch and Diego Llorente leaving the 66-year-old with only Liam Cooper as an experienced option in the centre of his defence for the trip to Newcastle on Friday.

Meanwhile, fans of the club are also sure to be furious – quite rightly – with the decision to uphold the 22-year-old’s ban, as not only was Elliott’s injury a freak accident, but the unavailability of the defender for the club’s upcoming clash will undoubtedly reduce their side’s chances of picking up a decent result for the long away trip to the North East this week.

The former Australia batsman Darren Lehmann is interested in taking up the England coach’s job, which is up for grabs after Peter Moores was sacked last week. He would consider any offer from the ECB after Shane Warne had said the England board should consider Lehmann ahead of the Ashes.”Yes, I’m interested,” Lehmann told the . “It’s something I would definitely consider. Warne is a very good friend of mine and he knows what I want to do. You would never knock back an opportunity like that.”Lehmann is not the first Australian whose name has been brought up for discussion, with Tom Moody also being linked to the position. South Africa’s Graham Ford, the Kent director of cricket, has also expressed an interest in filling the post.Lehmann, 38, played 27 Tests and 117 ODIs for Australia and also captained Yorkshire during his stint as an overseas player from 1997 to 2006. He has been an assistant at Australia’s Academy and has been signed up as coach by the Deccan Chargers for the second IPL season. However, Lehmann said he was keen to take up bigger challenges. “I’m working with second-stringers at the moment and anyone would want to work with players at that international level,” he said. “I’ll talk to them if they want to talk to me.”England will not appoint a new head coach for the upcoming tour of the West Indies. Andrew Strauss, who replaced Kevin Pietersen as captain, will be supported in the Caribbean by Andy Flower, England’s assistant coach, Phil Neale, the team operations manager, and other specialist coaches and support staff. Although no official interim appointment has been made, understands that Flower will be the senior man in the coaching hierarchy and has been named, along with Strauss, as one of the three selectors on tour.

Despite being up against India’s formidable batting line-up, England captain Kevin Pietersen expects Graeme Swann to put up a good performance in the first Test which starts on Thursday in Chennai. “It’s a decision we’ve come to because we think it will spin,” he said. “We think he’s the best and most attacking option.”We know the Indians are not bad players of spin. But no matter how good you are, you still have to play well on the day. He’ll be right at the Indian batsmen. Krejza did well here, and I think Swann’s better.”He was confident of the spinner performing well and said he deserved his debut. “He’s ecstatic. It’s a huge moment for anybody, to win that first Test cap. As a spinner, bowling in India is a huge challenge. But we’ve seen how Shaggy [Shaun] Udal bowled here on the last tour. When it’s your debut game, you’ll be buzzing for four or five days.”Pietersen believed England had picked their best XI, though Matt Prior’s inlcusion may have raised a few eyebrows. “I told the boys it was one of the most difficults decisions to make. It’s a healthy situation when you have the likes of Shah, Amjad and Adil Rashid to put pressure on the places.”We’ve also changed the keeper because we feel Matty Prior’s a better option with the bat. He’s also improved his keeping. I don’t think he lost confidence during the one-day series. It was pretty tough for everyone. He wasn’t the only one.”Pietersen said the mood within the team was quite upbeat and they were looking to make amends after the 5-0 thrashing in the one-day series. “We’re the underdogs, but it’s been a distracting time for both teams. The boys are so excited now about playing. We hopped on a plane in Abu Dhabi and came here because the boys love playing cricket in India. At the end of the day, we’re professional sportsmen, and when you step on the field, you turn on a little switch and play to your best.”He said while Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh were the players to watch out for, though he suggested England might have a plan for Yuvraj. “There’s lots of pressure on Yuvraj as well. It’ll be interesting to see how he plays the short ball.”

O tema gera apreensão no defensor.

Former Man City ace drops huge Ronaldo transfer claim

Former Manchester City star Michael Ball insists that the club never made a bid for Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer transfer window.

An amazing sequence of events saw City heavily linked with a potential move to sign the legendary Portugal international from Juventus.

However, not 24 hours later, Manchester United revealed that they had reached an agreement to sign their former star, who could make his second debut for the club this weekend against Newcastle United.

BBC Sport reported at the time that United struck a deal with the Serie A club to pay £12.8m for one of the best footballers of all time, and Ball has now insisted that there was no bid put forward by City.

Prior to United announcing his signing, reports claimed that the Premier League champions explored the option of bringing him to the Etihad Stadium, but ultimately decided against it.

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern, Ball said: “It was a strange one. The social media reports were all looking like it was City.

“I’ve been told City never made a bid for him. They spoke to his agent and wages wouldn’t be a problem but they never actually spoke to Juventus about bringing him to the football club.”

Acabou – acrescentou o presidente do Flu.

Newcastle transfer claim involving Ashley

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has made a worrying Newcastle United transfer about involving Mike Ashley.

The Lowdown: Window shut

The summer transfer window has now officially shut for the St. James’ Park faithful in terms of bringing in any more players.

With Joe Willock from Arsenal the only permanent arrival of note in the North East, the Toon Army can certainly feel aggrieved by their lack of transfer business.

The Latest: Ashley claim

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan has now made a worrying claim involving Ashley ahead of the January transfer window:

“Steve Bruce was never going to be in an easy position when managing Newcastle.”

“I don’t think Mike Ashley wants to put a penny into Newcastle, he wants them to become self-sufficient.”

The Verdict: Worrying

It is certainly worrying to hear that Ashley wants the Tyneside club to become ‘self-sufficient’, thus a lack of proper investment will continue while he is still the owner.

Since Ashley took over the Magpies back in June 2007, they rank 11th out of all teams in the Premier League in terms of total spending (£558.24m), and 25th in terms of net spend (-£164.78m), with only five (Norwich City, Southampton, Watford, Burnley and Leeds United) of the sides with a lower net spend still in the top flight (Transfermarkt).

For a club that used to consistently achieve top-half finishes before Ashley was in charge, supporters have the right to demand more from Ashley to try and get them back to where they want to be.

Nonetheless, the claim made by Jordan certainly does not bode well ahead of the January window, where Steve Bruce will surely want to try and strengthen his squad further.
