South Australia’s brave push to stay in contention for the Sheffield Shield final may be futile despite their outclassing of the fourth-placed Western Australia. If Queensland or Tasmania win in the other matches, the Redbacks’ chances will be over for another year, but once again they will be able to point to strong form at the end of the season.Graham Manou’s 85 and 55 for Aaron O’Brien continued the strong work of the South Australia batsmen as they declared at 9 for 457. Manou narrowly missed reaching three hundreds in as many games when he fell to the part-time spin of Adam Voges. Voges chipped in with 4 for 97 while Brett Dorey was next on the list with 2 for 86.Carrying an advantage of 214, the visitors quickly strengthened their position with the wickets of the openers Luke Towers (0) and Liam Davis (24). David Bandy and Voges followed, leaving the Warriors at 4 for 64, and they also lost Wes Robinson for 46 before stumps. Luke Pomersbach was 43 as they finished the day at 5 for 149, needing 65 runs to make South Australia bat again.

Preview: Sunderland XI vs Robins

Lee Johnson’s Sunderland side head into their upcoming League One fixture on Tuesday evening in fantastic form, with the Black Cats remaining unbeaten over their last seven fixtures in all competitions, as well as currently sitting second in the third tier standings.

However, while the visit of 14th-placed Cheltenham Town should not cause Sunderland too many problems on paper, the Mackems boss has a number of fitness concerns in his first-team squad at present, something which could well pose the 40-year-old with something of a selection headache against the Robins.

So, will Johnson make any changes to the team that started last time out against Bolton Wanderers? Here’s how we think Sunderland could line up against Cheltenham, along with the latest team and injury news…

With both Callum Doyle and Dennis Cirkin appearing to be doubts for the Cheltenham fixture due to injury, Johnson may well be forced into at least two changes from the side that defeated Bolton last weekend, however, we predict the 40-year-old will make one further adjustment to his starting XI on Tuesday.

Regarding Doyle and Cirkin, the two players who replaced the stricken duo against the Trotters, Bailey Wright and Niall Huggins, come into the side to face the Robins, with the 20-year-old Leeds United loanee playing on the opposite flank to his natural position at right-back.

Elsewhere, the duo of Luke O’Nien and Dan Neil retain their spots in the middle of the park, while Elliot Embleton, who started on the left-wing in place of the sidelined Lynden Gooch last time out, moves into central attacking midfield.

As such, the £2.25m-rated Alex Pritchard could be set for a return to the Sunderland bench, with 20-year-old Bayern Munich loanee Leon Dajaku staring on the left-hand side of the Black Cats’ attack, while Ross Stewart retains his place up top ahead of Nathan Broadhead.

Southampton: Stephens suffered knee injury

Ralph Hasenhuttl has provided an injury update on Southampton defender Jack Stephens…

What’s the latest?

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed that Jack Stephens suffered a knee injury in the draw with Manchester City on Saturday.

The centre-back hobbled off in the first half and Hasenhuttl has now revealed that it was due to a knock to his knee, although the full extent of the blow remains unknown.

He told the Daily Echo:

“I don’t know what it is, but he had knee problems, so hopefully it is not too bad.

“But it wouldn’t be good, because he was in perfect shape.

“He was a really important player for us and so early in the season an injury wouldn’t be good for us.”

Fans will be worried

Southampton fans will surely be worried by this injury update from Hasenhuttl as there is the potential for a knee injury to be a serious problem.

On the flip side, it may have been a precautionary move to take him off and he could have a few days in recovery before returning to training for Southampton. At this point, it remains unclear and that could be what causes Saints fans to worry.

Stephens has been an important member of the side this season, starting all five of the club’s Premier League matches so far.

Hasenhuttl hailed the defender as a leader earlier this year, telling the Daily Echo: “When Jack works on his defensive duels and is aggressive there, and nasty, then he is a very good centre-back.

“He is like a leader at the back at the moment, he has really fought for his position and doesn’t want to give it away so easily.

“I think at the moment he shows how important he can be for this club and this is what I need, a guy who is good on the ball but also wins his duels.

“This was sometimes the problems with Jack, that he is a little bit too nice, too calm and a little bit too less aggressive, now when he is defending forward he is strong and this is what I demand of the player, and what he needs to do consistently.”

This shows how highly Hasenhuttl rates Stephens, when he is at the top of his game, which is why losing him to a long-term injury, would be a cause for concern for Southampton supporters.

They will now be waiting impatiently for a positive update on his situation ahead of the clash with Wolves next weekend.

A round-up of the fourth day of the fifth-round matches in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Cricinfo staff23-Jan-2009Group APakistan International Airlines continued their supremacy at the top of the table with a comprehensive win against Sui Southern Gas Corporation(SSGC) at the Quaid-e-Azam Park. SSGC began the final day on 14 for 1, trailing by 195, and Tahir Khan ran through the opposition, picking up 4 for 63. Wajid Ali and Haaris Ayaz battled bravely to put on 79 for the seventh wicket, but it was not enough as SSGC collapsed to 191.Samiullah Khan and Imran Ali set up victory for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) against Lahore Shalimar at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. While Yasir Shah starred the previous day with his three-wicket haul, Samiullah and Imran helped themselves to Lahore’s lower order on the last day, finishing with three apiece. Lahore were shot out for 199 after resuming on 115 for 4, with the last six wickets falling for 84 runs. Unbeaten half-centuries from Ali Waqas and Umar Akmal then helped SNGPL reach the target of 119 in 26.4 overs. It was a complete turnaround from their first-innings display as Habib Bank Limited (HBL) drew their match against Karachi Whites at the Southend Club Cricket Stadium. Precariously placed on 63 for 3 overnight, and trailing by 259, the not-out batsmen Ahmed Shehzad and Aftab Alam completed a 105-run stand for the fourth wicket. Shehzad went on to reach his century and put on 142 for the fifth wicket with wicketkeeper Farhan Iqbal. Shehzad finally finished on 175, hitting 28 fours and a six, and by the time Farhan brought up his fifty, the visitors had reached safety.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited had to be content with the three points by virtue of their first-innings lead as they failed to reach the target of 291 set by Water and Power Development Authority(WAPDA) at the Shiekhupura Stadium. WAPDA declared on 333 for 8, as Bilal Khilji remained unbeaten on 137 and Imranullah Aslam brought up his half-century. Azhar Attari was ZTBL’s most successful bowler with 4 for 77, but it was a little too late as his team ended the final day on 139 for 4.Group BThe Rawalpindi pacemen, Rizwan Akbar and Mohammad Rameez, shared eight wickets to hand their team a 218-run win against Sialkot in Islamabad. Needing another 329 more to win on the final day, the overnight opening partnership of 53 was broken with just four runs added. What ensued was a total collapse, with Sialkot losing wickets at regular intervals. Rameez ended with a five-for and Rizwan picked up 3 for 62 to give Rawalpindi the nine points.Forced to follow-on, the Faisalabad batsmen put up a better show second time round to hold on for a draw against Multan in Okara. They declared at 400 for 8, setting Multan a target of 174 for victory, but the hosts could only reach 137 for 3 in the 16 overs. Resuming on 187 for 1, Imran Ali brought up his century and was well supported by captain Ijaz Ahmed jnr, who made 60 off 104 balls. While Imran hit 21 boundaries in his 310-ball effort, Ijaz managed eight fours and a six. Sajjad Hussain and Mohammad Irshad picked up three wickets apiece before the Multan batsmen had a dip at their target. The opening stand of 53 set the tone with Ansar Javed joining in towards the end with a 28-ball 43, but the hosts had to settle for just the three points as time ran out.Lahore Ravi ran into a resolute partnership between Mohammad Aslam and Ata-ur-Rehman as they failed to pick up an outright win against Quetta at Muridke. Both batsmen hit fifties but after their partnership of 110 none of the other batsmen offered resistance as the visitors were bowled out for 214. Waqas Ahmed picked up 5 for 41 to end with an eight-wicket match haul.Fifties from Mahfooz Sabri and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan guaranteed first-innings points for Peshawar against Hyderabad at the Niaz Stadium. Replying to Hyderabad’s 292, Peshawar ended on 360 after Sajjad Ali had brought up his half-century earlier in the day. Sabri (52) and Rizwan (68 not out) then added 51 for the sixth wicket, as they neared the Hyderabad score. At stumps, Hyderabad’s first-innings hero Azeem Ghumon and Faisal Athar had taken them to 67 for 1.Hyderabad v Peshawar final day
Peshawar’s bowlers triggered a collapse to set their team up for a six-wicket win – their first in the tournament – at the Niaz Stadium. Having already conceded first-innings points, Hyderabad failed to bat out for a draw on the fourth day. Azeem Ghumon, the first-innings centurion, top scored with 46, with overnight partner Faisal Athar the next-best with 32. Opening bowlers Waqar Ahmed and Nauman Habib took three wickets each for the visitors, while the young legspinner Hidayatullah Khan finished with 2 for 43 off his 19 overs. Hyderabad added 125 to their overnight score of 67 for 1 in 52.3 overs, leaving Peshawar with a target of 125. Naeem-ur-Rehman struck thrice, but Mohammad Rizwan’s unbeaten 50 saw them home.

Worcestershire ponder ground move

Worcestershire could soon be playing cricket at a new ground as theyseek ways to counter the growing risk of flooding

Worcestershire could soon be playing cricket at a new ground as theyseek ways to counter the growing risk of flooding. The club, who have been based at New Road since the end of the 19thcentury, plan to play limited-overs cricket on the outskirts of thecity of Worcester and could move to the ground entirely if floodingproblems persist.Planning application for the new ground, situated at Hindlip (just offjunction six of the M5), will be submitted within weeks inanticipation of work beginning in the spring. In the long-term theowners, Sir Bert Millichip Sports Limited, do not rule out attempting to stageinternational matches at the venue. The ‘sports hub’, which will be situated adjacent to rugby’s Worcester Warriors’ Sixways Stadium, will also ultimately feature an Olympic size swimming pool, a tennis centre and the Sir Bobby Robson football centre. The timing of the news will surprise many. Worcestershire are currently building a new pavilion at New Road and have plans for a £10m redevelopment of the site. Indeed, they insist they remain committed to their picturesque New Road home and intend to continue playing their first-class fixtures at the venue. There is a growing sense that they require a contingency plan, however, and the Hindlip ground could prove ideal. As a privately-financed initiative, Worcestershire are not putting their own money into the project, though they are considering allocating their £500,000 floodlight grant from the ECB directly to the new ground. The site will also accommodate a large indoor school. Worcestershire’s New Road ground is the only county HQ without such a facility, with players currently travelling as far afield as Birmingham and Shrewsbury for nets.Obstacles remain, however. The developers require planning permission to build 500 houses to fund the sports hub. Though the council initially identified the site as their “preferred option” for housing, they are now favouring another site which would not provide the samesporting potential. Indeed, such a scenario would pose a considerable threat to the sports hub proposals. That would be a shame, according to Worcestershire’s chief executive,Mark Newton. “There is an opportunity to do something very special here,” Newtontold Cricinfo. “And not just for cricket. Worcester could get world-classsports facilities. We’re in favour of anything that makes that happenand we liked the look of the outlined scheme. In this day and age, howelse could you fund such facilities?”From our perspective this would be a second ground. It would be awonderful facility, with a state of the art indoor school. But we arecommitted to New Road and we will continue to play first-classcricket there.”Worcestershire lost over £1m in 2007 after floods devastated their home fixture list. They were again forced to evacuate New Road at the end of the 2008 season and, though they have an agreement to use Kidderminster Victoria CC’s ground, its position in a residential arearenders it unsuitable for further development. Those requiring a reminder of New Road’s precarious position at the water’s edge may not have long to wait. “Two days’ solid rain would probably result in another flood,” Newton admitted. “We’ve been quite lucky so far this winter, but now is the danger period.”

West Ham missed a trick with Origi

West Ham may have missed a trick as mooted summer target Divock Origi continued his fine recent form this week…

What was the word?

Throughout the transfer window, the Liverpool fringe star was linked with a switch to the London Stadium, with one of the most reliable Irons insiders talking up their interest.

According to ExWHUemployee back in early August, the hardly-seen 29-cap Belgian forward was a potential target for David Moyes late in the summer but ultimately, the east Londoners would not go onto sign any striker whatsoever.

One that got away?

With Jurgen Klopp needing to rotate his Reds’ side, Origi has been gifted some rare opportunities to impress.

The £10.8m-rated frontman started and provided an assist in their Champions League group stage win over AC Milan and then scored and assisted against Norwich City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.

As explained by Football FanCast after the match, Origi was a real star of the show for Klopp and the Merseyside giants – not only did he contribute on the scoresheet but he also turned provider, also creating two key passes.

West Ham’s need for frontline additions is no secret. They have been without depth in the position since last January when the Hammers hierarchy sanctioned the exit of club-record flop Sebastien Haller to Ajax.

It left Moyes with a historically injury-prone Michail Antonio, who on his day is certainly one of the best finishers in the English top-flight, but he cannot do it all and he definitely cannot do it all across as many as four competitions.

He needs a rest from time to time, especially given his sketchy injury record.

Perhaps Origi was the solution they were crying out for.

Last week, Klopp revealed his shock at the lack of interest in his backup forward. He told BT Sport (via Sky Sports):

“[Divock] played a beautiful game. People forget how good he is, it’s difficult to get into this team.

“In the summer transfer window we all thought there would be a proper offer for him, but obviously people don’t watch football enough. He’s a sensational striker and he did really well today.”

Once hailed as a “monster” by Man City legend Vincent Kompany, it certainly seems as if the Irons were one of the teams to miss out on the untapped exploits of the forgotten Liverpool striker this summer.

AND in other news, Moyes has played a blinder over “unplayable” West Ham gem, his value has increased 50%…

DÚVIDAS NO “TOMBA”
