Potential Benitez replacement identified

Even before he was officially appointed as Everton’s new manager to replace Carlo Ancelotti, some fans of the Merseyside club had no qualms in expressing their displeasure at having the former Liverpool boss take charge of the Toffees.

Earlier this month, after going through October and November without picking up a win in the Premier League, Everton fans staged a protest at Goodison Park against Benitez and the club’s hierarchy.

Despite Everton owner Farhad Moshiri claiming that he is behind Benitez and will give him the chance to turn their season around, journalist Pete O’Rourke has dropped a claim on who could come in to replace the 61-year-old should Moshiri change his mind.

Speaking recently to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke had this to say on the situation.

He said: “I think [Paulo] Fonseca could be a good fit for Everton, especially if they do decide to get rid of Rafa. He could come straight in as he’s out of work. Fonseca, for me, would be the one if Rafa does get the sack.”

As O’Rourke mentioned, Fonseca is currently without a club after leaving AS Roma over the summer where he took charge of 101 matches in total, winning 53 of them in the process.

Prior to that, the 48-year-old took charge of 139 games with Ukraine club Shakhtar Donetsk across all competitions, winning an impressive 104 of them.

Having been linked with the Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United manager positions in recent months, his record and the possibility of seeing Benitez leave Goodison Park would surely be a thrilling prospect for a lot of Everton fans, especially if he could turn their fortunes around and end the season on a high note.

Moving forward, if results don’t improve for Everton in the next few weeks and months and Moshiri does change his mind about Benitez’s immediate future at the club and gives him the sack, they should definitely approach Fonseca to see if he would be interested in taking the job at Goodison Park.

If Moshiri does stick with Benitez until the end of the season and Everton don’t finish in the top half of the table, his future in charge of the team should definitely be under question and if Fonseca is still out of a job by then, it could be the right time for Everton to once again hire a new manager.

Asif and Kaneria make it Pakistan's day

Pakistan took charge of the second Test in Wellington, dismissing New Zealand for 99 and then extending their overall lead to 229

The Bulletin by S Rajesh04-Dec-2009

It’s a venue that Pakistan’s bowlers have enjoyed more than those from any other side over the last two decades, and they celebrated the Basin Reserve’s fiftieth Test in fitting style, destroying New Zealand’s top order with another clinical performance that left them superbly placed to level the series. After extending their first innings to 264, thanks largely to Kamran Akmal’s enterprising 70, the bowlers immediately got down to business, exploiting the conditions and the huge flaws in the techniques of the New Zealand batsmen, bundling them out for 99 and taking their overall lead to 229 by stumps.Save for a brief four-over period when New Zealand took the last three Pakistan wickets and a spell just before close of play, the day belonged entirely to the visitors. Mohammad Aamer did his now customary trick of taking a wicket in his first over – is he the new first-over specialist after Daryl Tuffey? – and consistently bowled in the mid-140s, Mohammad Asif operated in his usual channel around off and seamed the ball both ways, Umar Gul was the perfect first-change bowler offering New Zealand no respite, while Danish Kaneria befuddled the lower order with his bag of tricks. While the four-pronged bowling attack gave little away, New Zealand put in yet another shambolic batting display, as their poor defensive techniques and shot selection were ruthlessly exposed. None of their batsmen came to terms with the ball seaming around in both directions, and they made it worse for themselves with some poor strokeplay. None was more guilty than Brendon McCullum, who chased his first ball – a wide one – and edged to second slip when New Zealand had already lost five wickets with little on the board. From the moment Aamer started his first over, it was clear New Zealand would have their hands full. His fourth ball to Guptill swung back and rapped him on the pads; the next one left him, clipped the edge, and New Zealand’s opening pair had failed to last the first over for the third time in three innings. That was one of two overs Pakistan bowled before lunch and the slide continued after the break. Asif flummoxed Tim McIntosh and forced an inside edge to short leg, and should have had Daniel Flynn in similar fashion had Salman Butt not dropped a regulation catch. Ross Taylor was the only batsman to play with confidence – he raced to 30 from 40 balls, showing decisive footwork and driving confidently through the off side off the fast bowlers. His judgement failed him, though, when Gul slipped in an indipper that took the off stump after Taylor left it alone.Peter Fulton was a walking wicket once again, shuffling indecisively to a straight and full one on the stumps, but New Zealand really crumbled after tea, going from 85 for 4 to 99 all out in the space of six overs. It’s a fate that has often befallen New Zealand sides of the past against Pakistan, and this time it was Asif who started the slide. Flynn’s painstaking knock ended when he was trapped in front of off by one that straightened – the review failed to save him – and when McCullum fell next ball, Asif was on a hat-trick. Vettori averted it, but was, for once, unable to lead another rearguard effort as Kaneria snuffed out the tail in a trice. More than just the three wickets he got, what would have worried Vetorri was the amount of turn he extracted from the second-day pitch.Apart from Taylor, the one batsman who was comfortable batting on the surface was Kamran Akmal, who showed plenty of skill and aggressive intent in his 70. His 64-run stand with Gul – the largest of the innings – kept New Zealand in the field much longer than they would have liked in the opening session. Both batsmen went after the bowling, with Kamran lacing drives confidently through the covers to bring up his second half-century of the series. When New Zealand did get Rudi Koertzen to raise the finger against Kamran, the lbw decision was overturned on review, with replays suggesting it would have gone over the top of the stumps.Throughout the day, the bounce on the track kept the bowlers interested: the last 30 minutes was a huge test for Pakistan’s batsmen, with O’Brien, who bowled an inspired spell, exceeding 140 kph, peppering the batsmen with plenty of short deliveries, and getting Butt with one such delivery that had him all tangled up and gloving to Taylor in the slips.Imran Farhat was consumed by the pace and movement too but, despite that lion-hearted effort, the story of the day remained New Zealand’s abject collapse. In their last two Tests at this ground, Pakistan have had one bowler winning them the match – it was Wasim Akram in 1994 and Shoaib Akhtar in 2003. The spoils were shared this time around, but the end result could be just as emphatic for Pakistan.

Phil Hay provides Leeds injury update

Leeds United have no new injury problems ahead of their trip to Manchester City on Tuesday night, according to reliable journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Leeds preparing for City clash

The Whites were beaten 3-2 away to Chelsea on Saturday, conceding a late penalty to lose in heartbreaking fashion at Stamford Bridge.

It doesn’t get any easier for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, with reigning Premier League champions City welcoming them to the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

Leeds also have numerous injury problems to contend with at the moment, but a fitness update from the manager at least indicated that the situation hasn’t worsened.

The Latest: Hay gives injury update

Taking to Twitter on Monday afternoon, Hay confirmed that Bielsa doesn’t have any new injuries in his squad, but nor is he expecting anyone who is sidelined to return for the Manchester City clash.

The journalist tweeted: “From Bielsa’s pre-City presser: no fresh injuries ahead of tomorrow but none of the players who were absent at Chelsea are ready to return. That would mean Bamford, Phillips, Cooper, Struijk, Koch still unavailable.”

The Verdict: Huge task ahead

This is arguably going to be Leeds’ toughest game of the season so far, as they look to take down a City side who have won their last six league matches in a row and currently sit top of the table.

It is difficult enough beating them when everyone is fit – the Whites famously triumphed at the Etihad last season – but seeing off Pep Guardiola’s star-studded team without the likes of Patrick Bamford, Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper is even harder.

Anything other than a defeat would feel like a huge bonus for Leeds, although they have at least shown that they can cause the big teams problems since their return to the top flight, as highlighted by their valiant efforts at Chelsea on Saturday.

Adama Traore flops again for Wolves

Wolves performed nothing short of a miracle conceding only one goal to Premier League champions Manchester City this afternoon after going down to ten men in the first half of the game.

Bruno Lage’s side went to the Etihad Stadium to face a City side who had won their last five games in the league.

Wolves were dealt a huge blow at the end of the first half when Raul Jimenez was red-carded just before the interval; and from that point, Wolves were reliant on the attacking prowess of Adama Traore to try and take something from the game, having gone in at half-time on level terms.

One man who went into this game with a point to prove was Traore, who was handed a start alongside Jimenez in a front two. However, the 26-year-old has failed to register a single goal or assist for his club this season, and that was the case once more against Manchester City today.

The visitors couldn’t hold on to take a point from the game after Joao Moutinho was caught by a handball inside the box, leading to a penalty which saw Raheem Sterling score his 100th Premier League goal in the 66th minute.

Not only did Traore fail to score or set up a team-mate in finding the net today, according to SofaScore the £43k-p/w winger had fewer touches than Jose Sa. He only made seven passes in his 67 minutes on the pitch and did not have a single shot on or off target, completely lacking creativity and involvement in throughout his time on the field before he was subbed off for Hwang Hee-chan.

This is the 17th appearance this season for Traore where he has failed to have any goal involvements for Wolves, and it may be time for Lage to opt for other, more consistent forwards like Daniel Podence and Hwang, who have proven they are capable of creating and finishing chances. The South Korean has scored four goals in the same number of appearances as Traore this term.

Traore’s performance today evoked a scathing comment from Graeme Souness earlier in the season, when the Sky Sports pundit said of the 26-year-old: “He’s a near miss as a footballer. He gets you on the edge of your seat but time and time again you’re going to shake your head at the misses he has. There’s not a lot of goals, not a lot of return.”

After drawing another blank today and giving an overall poor performance, it’s hard to disagree with Souness’ critique of the underperforming Wolves winger, who failed the test of being put in a centre-forward role by Lage this afternoon.

Simons questions Albie Morkel's role at No 6

Former South Africa coach believes allrounder not convincing enough to keep his place as a No.6 batsman

Eric Simons, the former South Africa coach, has questioned the role Albie Morkel fills in the team because he focuses too much on scoring boundaries instead of picking singles. Simons was of the opinion that Morkel was not convincing enough to keep his place as a No.6 batsman.”Albie is the greatest concern [in the South African line-up],” he told . “I’m not sure he has defined his role in the team and what he’s going to be doing. I disagree with Albie at six. I don’t think he can bat up the order.”If you look at the stats, most of Morkel’s runs are scored in boundaries and that’s his problem. I don’t think he has the ability to rotate the strike. If they do pick him at six then I think it’s a mistake because it will be a long time before he can develop into someone who can rotate the strike like a number six needs to.”The hard-hitting Morkel was a big success on the tour of Australia earlier this year with his boundary hitting in the Powerplay overs towards the end of the innings which made the difference. His bowling gives South Africa the option of playing him as the fourth seamer but Simons was not convinced about that. Morkel was smashed for 32 off his two overs in the second Twenty20 against England in Centurion.Simons felt that South Africa would be better off in picking specialists instead of utility cricketers like Morkel. “We have Jacques Kallis and JP Duminy in the top order, both of whom can bowl,” he said. “Now you’ve got a situation where you have got to pick your best number six batsman. Are they saying that Albie Morkel is the best number six batsmen in the country? I’m not so sure about it.”Some teams like New Zealand have to use utility players because they don’t have the skill level. “We don’t have to do that. We must pick our best.”
