Everton given injury boost for Norwich trip

Everton have been plagued with injuries over the first half of their season, but it looks like they could be out the other side of it as it has been revealed that two important players will be available to feature against Norwich as the Toffees travel to Carrow Road this afternoon in search of their first Premier League win of 2022.

Both Richarlison and Yerry Mina were spotted back in training earlier this week, and Rafael Benitez took to his pre-match press conference on Friday to confirm the availability of both players and to give an insight to Tom Davies’ injury.

He outlined: “I think all were training yesterday. Not available for injuries is Tom Davies, who has had his [hamstring] operation.

“In terms of injuries, everyone was training yesterday. Now we have to treat them carefully.

“At the moment, they are fine then it’s up to us to can be who’s available for this game and the next game.”

Benitez will be buzzing

The comebacks of regular starters such as Dominic Calvert Lewin, who returned to action at the beginning of the month, will surely leave Benitez buzzing. The quelling of the injury crisis could not have come at a better time for Everton as they look to widen the gap between themselves and the relegation zone, with just eight points separating them from the dreaded bottom three.

Not only will most of the squad be fit for the clash with the Canaries, the three signings made over the last fortnight will also be available to start this afternoon, with Anwar El Ghazi, Nathan Patterson, Vitaliy Mykolenko all ready to get stuck into playing for the Toffees.

Everton have a horrendous record on the road this season, with just one league win away from Goodison Park this season, although Norwich have managed just one top-flight victory in front of their own fans and are currently on a run of six defeats without even scoring.

Also, the returns of Richarlison and Mina could offer a significant boost to Benitez. The pair netted 16 goals between them last season, with the Brazilian being their second-highest scorer on 13 and the Colombian instrumental to their passing game with a success rate of 90.1%.

Therefore, to have them back training and available for today’s trip to Norfolk could leave Everton’s under-fire manager buzzing on the journey east.

Mahmudullah ton averts follow-on for Bangladesh

Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah counterattacked admirably, and the latter completed his maiden Test ton, to take Bangladesh past the follow-on mark on the third day in Hamilton

A rousing seventh wicket stand between Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah rescued Bangladesh from the follow-on the third day at Seddon Park. New Zealand batted for five overs before bad light intervened, but lost the wicket of BJ Watling, to finish 154 ahead at stumps.Shakib and Mahmudullah combined with Bangladesh reeling at 196 for 6, and added a stroke-filled 145, in the process setting a new Bangladesh record for the seventh wicket, to propel the score past 400.Earlier in the day, the New Zealand seamers, supported by the ever-threatening Daniel Vettori had run rampant, demolishing the touring top order by picking up five wickets for 127 runs in the first session. Chris Martin and Tim Southee set the tone early, bowling a niggardly line and length to induce fatal errors from the overnight pair. Tamim Iqbal’s innings retained little of the breathtaking panache from the previous evening, and he was out to a Southee delivery that was not short enough to pull. The remainder of the Bangladesh top order crumbled spinelessly under the relentless pressure, and things looked bleak going in to lunch at 211 for 6.The New Zealand captain had the cushion of runs to play with, and it showed. The slip cordon was jam-packed for the seamers all morning, and a veritable swarm of close-in catchers encircled the Bangladesh batsmen while the spinners were in operation. The familiar Bangladesh collapse that ensued suggested that the match was heading to yet another embarrassing defeat for the tourists, but Shakib and Mahmudullah were on hand to arrest the slide and save face for Bangladesh. Both batsmen were circumspect at the start of their partnership, seeing off testing spells from Chris Martin and Daryl Tuffey, before being spurred into action by the introduction of spin from both ends. Using their feet to negate the gentle turn on offer, the pair flayed the slow bowlers to all corners in the afternoon session. A series of powerful drives was punctuated with lovely instances of deft touch, Shakib in particular using the lap-sweep and the scoop shot productively. Jeetan Patel was the primary victim of the duo’s assault, ending wicketless in the innings after having conceded 53 runs in 10 overs.Chris Martin broke the resistance soon after tea with the second new ball, though replays showed that Shakib’s under-edge bounced well short of Brendon McCullum, who claimed the catch instantly. It was an unfortunate end to a special innings from Shakib, who had overseen Bangladesh’s rescue-operation only to fall in sight of a well deserved maiden ton. Mahmudullah however, was not to be denied and, reached the landmark soon after Shakib’s departure with a boundary to square leg. He was eventually trapped in front by Daniel Vettori for a fantastic 115, while the rest of the tail perished around him. Bangladesh were all out for 408, their sixth highest total in Test matches, but still 145 runs adrift of New Zealand’s first innings score. The New Zealanders then batted out five overs of spirited bowling from the Bangladesh seamers, who created enough pressure to have BJ Watling brilliantly run out by Shakib for 1. The hosts are still well in control of the test match, ending the day effectively at 154 for 1, but Bangladesh showed encouraging signs of fight, and will hope for early wickets tomorrow if they are to challenge a New Zealand, who will hope they have seen the best that their opponents have to offer.

Tottenham agree Philippe Coutinho fee

According to a surprise report by Cadena SER, as relayed by AS, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a fee to potentially sign Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho after his loan spell at Spurs’ Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

The Lowdown: Coutinho completes return to England…

Before sealing his temporary move to Villa Park, where he will reunite with former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard, many clubs were linked with signing the Brazil international, including Tottenham.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

There were even suggestions that he would have chosen Spurs over other suitors like Newcastle and it is believed that the Lilywhites were willing to table a €20m (£16.7m) offer to sign Coutinho at one stage (El Nacional).

Alas, Villa eventually won the race for his signature this month, but Cadena SER (via AS) have lifted the lid on a surprise development in the story.

The Latest: Spurs agree Coutinho fee for next summer…

According to their information, Villa’s option to buy Coutinho at the end of his loan spell in the Midlands amounts to around €40m (£33.4m).

They claimed that this amount is the ‘same’ as what Barcelona have also ‘agreed’ with Spurs if they alternatively wish to sign the 29-year-old.

The Verdict: Surprise claim…

After the Villans confirmed his loan signing, you would’ve thought that it was the last we’d hear of the 29-year-old potentially joining Tottenham.

Alas, following this surprise claim, it would seem that Spurs transfer chief Fabio Paratici is thinking long ahead into the future and keeping a firm watch on just how Coutinho will fare back in the English top flight under Gerrard.

Called a ‘sensational player’ and ‘unbelievable’ by his former Anfield teammate Glen Johnson, who believes the Brazilian can still cut it in the big time, Coutinho’s phenomenal haul of 54 goals and 45 assists in 201 appearances for Liverpool comes as strong evidence for that.

Time will tell whether the Brazil maestro can impress Spurs or Villa enough for either club to sign him permanently for £33.4m, but it will certainly be interesting to see how it plays out.

Pakistan will bounce back in one-dayers – Afridi

The Pakistan allrounder believes Pakistan have a far better chance of succeeding in the limited-overs matches because their players are better suited to the format

Shahid Afridi: “There is no doubt in my mind that we are a very good one-day team”•Associated Press

Pakistan allrounder Shahid Afridi has said Pakistan have a far better chance of succeeding in the limited-overs matches in Australia because their players are better suited to the shorter format of the game. Pakistan have underperformed in the three-Test series so far, losing the first game, throwing away the second after maintaining a firm grip, and are struggling to snatch a consolation in the ongoing Hobart game, let alone saving it.”The problem is that in this [Test] team, most of them are one-day players,” Afridi told the . “There is no doubt in my mind that we are a very good one-day team.”I’m confident that we will do much better in the ODIs and the Twenty20 game. I won’t say that we are going to win the one-day series but our team definitely has the potential to do that. We will definitely be playing good cricket in the series.”Afridi is currently in Australia as an overseas player for South Australia for the Twenty20 Big Bash tournament. He is not in the frame for the Test side but is an integral part of the limited-overs side. He captains the Twenty20 side and deputises under Mohammad Yousuf for the ODIs.He agreed with Yousuf that senior players will have to be persisted with and not dropped at the expense of younger players. “We are the ones who have to lead by example. It’s always important for the senior players to perform their roles but against top teams like Australia, it’s just vital,” Afridi said. “You can’t beat them without the senior players doing their job.”Afridi will join the team on January 19, ahead of the first ODI at the Gabba three days later. He will take part in South Australia’s preliminary final against New South Wales on Sunday but will miss the tournament final on January 23.

Rangers fans react to Patterson sale info

Official Rangers media partner Heart & Hand have revealed some the details involved in the proposed sale of Nathan Patterson to Everton.

It emerged on Sunday evening that the English Premier League club were closing in on a deal for the Gers’ right back.

Everton had made two unsuccessful attempts to land Patterson in the 2021 summer transfer window, but Rangers’ insistence on a sell-on clause had apparently been a ‘stumbling block’ in negotiations.

However, according to a new claim from Heart & Hand, the Toffees have now agreed to that provision.

The Merseyside club will pay £12m for the Scotland international, most of it up front, and the fee could rise to £16m if add-ons are triggered.

Patterson has only made two starts in the Premiership this season, but his sale could become the most lucrative in Rangers’ history, surpassing the £12.15m they fetched from current Ibrox manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s move to Arsenal in 2001.

Here’s what these Rangers fans made of the information from Heart & Hand regarding the 20-year-old’s proposed exit.

These Rangers fans applaud Patterson business

“Will be sad to see Paterson go, but this is money that can kickstart Gio’s era and our player trading model without upset the first 11. Paterson will also be set for life, no brainer for all parties.”

“good deal for both parties, would have liked to see him develop here but too much to knock back for a substitute”

“As most are saying, great business for a player who has only started a handful of games. Perhaps he could have played a bigger part in years to come, but wasn’t fair on him being stuck on the bench. Hope some money gets put back into the team, right wing and centre half please.”

“Good move for everyone. Great money for us for a benchwarmer, and he’ll find it far easier to get a game at Everton instead of trying to dislodge Tav. The very best of luck to him. Once a Ranger etc”

“Some bit of business for us btw”

“That’s unreal business for a guy who has barely played any first team football”

Leicester veteran Stuart Symington dies

Stuart Symington, who captained Leicestershire in 1949 in what his only full season of first-class cricket, has died at the end of 83

Martin Williamson16-Dec-2009Stuart Symington, who captained Leicestershire in 1949 in what his only full season of first-class cricket, has died at the age of 83. At the time of his death he was the county’s oldest living captain, a mantle which now passes to Ray Illingworth.Symington played for the county in the war – his first outing was as a 17-year-old – and he made his first-class debut in 1948 when he played twice. In 1949 Leicestershire were in need of a new captain and, as dictated by financial and social rules of the time, he had to be an amateur. Symington was a perfect and willing candidate.A seam bowler and reasonable middle-order batsman, he was a more capable cricketer than many stand-in amateur captains but nevertheless he failed to inspire a weak side. In 21 matches he scored 659 runs at 21.25 and took 30 wickets at 43.73. The highest of his three fifties came against Essex at Grace Road, while his only five-for was against Derbyshire at Ashby-de-la-Zouch when he took 5 for 45.He stood down in August to resume his Army commitments and played no more first-class cricket. He became ADC to the governor of the Bahamas, and then adjutant to the Kings Royal Rifles in Germany. On retirement from the Army in 1958, he became a director of R&W Symington in Market Harborough. In the 1970 general election, he unsuccessfully stood as Conservative candidate for North West Leicester.
