Ottis Gibson keen on batting coach

Following a series of failed run-chases in the home series against South Africa, West Indies head coach Ottis Gibson has identified the role of a batting coach as critical to his team’s fortunes

Following a series of failed run-chases in the home series against South Africa, West Indies head coach Ottis Gibson has identified the role of a batting coach as critical to his team’s fortunes.”At the end of this Digicel Series, we will sit down and look at what I believe my ideal coaching staff to be and that will include a batting coach for the long term,” Gibson told reporters ahead of the third ODI. West Indies have already lost the two Twenty20 fixtures and the first two ODIs of the series. Former captain Jimmy Adams stepped in as a batting coach during the recently concluded World Twenty20, but currently the slot is empty.”Jimmy came in and did a very good job and I will sit down with the CEO (Dr. Ernest Hilarie) and put together that coaching staff and a batting coach will certainly be high on the agenda,” Gibson said. After a lacklustre start to their chase of 301 in the second ODI, which suggested a repeat of the previous match where they missed the target by some distance, West Indies fought back admirably through Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy to give the visitors a scare. Gibson identified the loss of Bravo’s wicket as the turning point of the game.”Bravo got out to the last ball of an over that had conceded 13 runs and it was the last ball of a bowler’s (Dale Steyn) spell. Those little things we need to get better at,” Gibson said.”We’ve created winning opportunities. Before you win, you have to create the opportunity to win. Those opportunities have not been strong enough. We have not thought through well enough. Talent-wise we’re not far behind South Africa, thinking-wise – we’re showing that we’re very far behind,” he said.

Wolves: Lage must unleash Chiquinho

With the winter break coming to a close, Wolves are back in action this weekend with an FA Cup clash against fellow Premier League side Norwich City at Molineux on Saturday afternoon.

On the chalkboard

In terms of which players Bruno Lage could select in his starting XI to take on the Canaries, one man who we think should be in with a shout of being in the team is January signing Chiquinho.

Wolves signed the winger from Portuguese club Estoril last month in a deal worth an initial fee of £3m and included him in their matchday squad for their previous Premier League game against Brentford, where he was an unused substitute.

Described as a “young, exciting and talented player” by Wolves’ technical director Scott Sellars, the 21-year-old racked up 20 goals and 10 assists in 84 appearances across his previous club’s youth and senior teams, showcasing the attacking capabilities and outlining why the Old Gold were keen on bringing him to the Black Country midway through the season.

This also shows how much the new Wolves arrival could terrify Dean Smith’s side if Lage give the winger his first start in an Old Gold shirt tomorrow for his 22nd birthday and offers him the freedom to express his attacking talents with his new team-mates.

While Wolves may already have another young attacker in their ranks in the shape of Fabio Silva, the teenager has only scored four goals in 50 appearances for the Midlands club across all competitions, which suggests that he may not have what it takes to lead the line for Lage’s team.

With that in mind, it could be a great opportunity for the manager to unleash Chiquinho and see what he can do against Premier League opposition alongside the other senior Wolves players. It should give a good indication of whether or not he could be a useful and regular option for Lage throughout the remainder of the season.

Silva has been given his chance and shown that he isn’t up to it, so it’s time to give Chiquinho his opportunity to wreak havoc on Norwich.

West Ham closing in on Duje Caleta-Car

West Ham United are closing in on the signing of Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car as the January transfer window draws nearer to its close.

What’s the story?

It’s been a slow start to the window for David Moyes’ side, with the Hammers struggling to make any inroads in terms of any incomings, but that appears to be coming to an end very soon.

According to French publication L’Équipe du Soir, Caleta-Car should be on his way to the London Stadium shortly, and that while fellow Premier League sides Wolves and Newcastle were interested in him, it’s West Ham who have won the race for him.

First major signing for West Ham

With the injury struggles the Hammers have had this season, particularly in defence, the addition of an experienced defender like Caleta-Car is welcome news for West Ham fans.

The 25-year-old has been a regular for Marseille in recent seasons, but he has been in and out of the side this term, with Jorge Sampaoli seemingly favouring Arsenal loanee William Saliba as the right-sided central defender.

Despite the lack of game-time, Caleta-Car has shown the kind of imposing centre-back that he is, winning a monstrous 74% of his total duels in Ligue 1 this year, and winning 75% of those contested in the air – exactly the kind of return that Moyes will surely love.

Indeed, former Liverpool defender and Caleta-Car’s Croatia teammate Dejan Lovren has tipped the centre-back to shine in the Premier League, claiming: “He is physically very strong, stronger than other players. He will explode in a few years and become even stronger.”

The 20-cap star would be a fine addition to the West Ham defence for the second half of this season.

Meanwhile, West Ham have made their “first offer” for this Ligue 1 striker…

PCA investigates claim that players took call to play

The Professional Cricketers’ Association is investigating claims that players were left to take the decision to go ahead with Saturday’s IPL match

The Professional Cricketers’ Association is investigating claims that players were left to take the decision to go ahead with Saturday’s IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians following two low-intensity bomb blasts outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The quoted Ian Smith, the PCA’s legal adviser, as saying the PCA were looking for more details about what led to Saturday’s match going ahead, and were looking at a claim from a non-Indian player that the decision was left to the players themselves.”The immediate worry for us, and I have heard this direct from one of the players, is that after the initial explosion and a sweep of the stadium, the decision that the game should go ahead was taken by the players,” Smith said. “From what I have been told, the Indian guys said very quickly that they felt unfazed. But the foreign guys then felt under pressure to agree with their colleagues. The idea that you can determine whether conditions are safe by a referendum of the players is outrageous.”They were out in the middle warming up when the bomb went off. We don’t know who provided them with the information on which they made their decision.”JP Duminy, who plays for Mumbai, told that Bangalore “were upset with the situation”. “We were told to go back into the change rooms [after the blasts], and the security tried to keep everything low-key,” he said. “They said everything was fine and that the game will go ahead. Bangalore were upset with the situation and had to be convinced to play the game. My team was always going to play.”Smith said he hadn’t been able to speak to any of the six English players – Paul Collingwood, Eoin Morgan, Owais Shah, Michael Lumb, Kevin Pietersen and Ravi Bopara – involved in the IPL, but had been in email communication and advised them wait for a full report from the ICC’s security experts Nicholls Steyn Associates and Reg Dickason, security adviser to the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations. The semi-finals of the IPL have now been moved out of Bangalore and will be played at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai instead. While pleased with the shift, the PCA said it wasn’t happy about the relocation being announced before the players had left Bangalore.”Players I have spoken to today are experiencing quite a few problems and some are currently caught up in traffic trying to reach the airport, which isn’t ideal,” Angus Porter, the PCA chief executive, told Cricinfo. “We are pleased that the semi-finals have been moved to Mumbai, but making it public before the players have left Bangalore has left us a little uneasy. We will be very glad when they reach Mumbai. When asked if the events of the last 48 hours went against pre-tournament agreements, Porter said, “The security plans have varied with how they have been implemented and we are concerned with how some aspects have been delivered.”But what I do want to add is that this isn’t a time to hit the panic button about the 2011 World Cup. Security around international teams is generally easier to deliver, rather than when individual players are out there representing sides such as at the IPL.”

Auckland and Canterbury post wins

A round-up of the ninth round of matches in the Plunket Shield

A comprehensive batting display, led by Gareth Hopkins’ double-hundred helped Auckland thrash Central Districts by an innings and 93 runs at the Colin Maiden Park.Central elected to bat, but little else went their way as seamer Dean Bartlett struck twice before they could open their account, removing Brad Patton and Timothy Weston in his first over. Mathew Sinclair followed soon after to leave Central in disarray. George Worker and Bevan Griggs struck fighting half-centuries to give their side a semblance of a competitive score, as offspinner Bhupinder Singh grabbed four wickets to end the innings at 269.When Central’s bowlers reduced Auckland to 128 for 3, the game was in the balance, but things went pear-shaped for the visitors from there. Opener Richard Jones and Hopkins added 135 to all but wipe out the deficit before Jones fell for a fine 123. Anaru Kitchen continued the dominance with his captain, the pair putting on a massive 206 runs to put the game out of Central’s reach. Kitchen struck 14 fours and three sixes in his sparkling innings of 116 before becoming Worker’s third wicket. Colin de Grandhomme then walked in to heap more misery on the tired attack, smashing an unbeaten 86-ball 106. Through it all, Hopkins batted with consummate assurance and style, picking up 23 boundaries on his way to 201.The declaration eventually came with a lead of 366 runs, and with little hope of survival for Central. The new-ball bowlers, Michael Bates and Bartlett, wreaked havoc once again, picking up eight wickets between them, while Sinclair fought hard with 129, but could not prevent the resounding defeat.Canterbury were made to scrap for their five-wicket win over Wellington in Rangiora. After winning the toss, the Canterbury seam attack had Wellington reeling at 66 for 6. Luke Woodcock’s rearguard 76 lifted them out of the morass, to an under-par score of 176, as Brandon Hinii grabbed four wickets.Canterbury’s batsmen then went about building a handy lead, anchored by Shanan Stewart’s ton and a useful contribution from Michael Papps. Ili Tugaga ran through the tail to finish with four wickets and keep the lead down to 142. Wellington put up a much-improved show in the second innings, with the openers Neal Parlane and Stephen Murdoch batting patiently to add 124 and bring their side back into the game. Todd Astle then delivered a twin strike to create a minor wobble, Murdoch departing for 59, and Cameron Merchant, soon after for a duck. But James Franklin and Parlane joined forces to ensure that there was no collapse.Parlane was the first to reach hundred, and eventually fell for a well-made 137 off 243 balls. Michael Pollard helped Franklin add 90 runs and raise visions of a spectacular comeback for Wellington, before both departed within ten runs of each other. Franklin struck 26 fours and a six in his 214-ball 162. Astle, who finished with a five-for, and Johann Myburgh, polished off the lower order to keep Wellington’s lead down to 305. At 85 for 4, it was anybody’s game and for the second time in the match, Stewart seized the moment in style. His 92 was supported well by Peter Fulton’s 77, and Dean Brownlie’s unbeaten 74, as Canterbury coasted home by five wickets. In the only non-decisive result of the ninth round, Northern Districts and Otago played out a high-scoring draw in Whangerei. Otago opted to field and but couldn’t make early inroads due to a solid opening stand from Michael Parlane and Daniel Flynn, who both struck 60s and added 113 runs. Nathan McCullum sparked a middle-order wobble before Brad Wilson’s 107 shepherded the side, in the company of the tail. Peter McGlashan contributed 71, while McCullum and Nick Beard took three wickets each before Northern declared at 465 for 9. Craig Cumming and Darren Broom led Otago’s reply with fine centuries and a 247-run stand for the second wicket. Cumming struck 27 fours in his 160, while Broom made 119. Greg Todd and McCullum then took over, with knocks of 91 and 88 respectively, as Otago went past Northern’s score. They eventually declared 111 runs ahead of Northern, with Graeme Aldridge picking four wickets. Northern had no problems in surviving 63 overs and proceeding to 212 for 7 before the match was called off.Auckland remained at the bottom of the table despite the win, while Northern maintained their top spot.
