Hussey and North fight for survival

Michael Hussey and Marcus North have known each other since their childhood days in Perth playing for Wanneroo, but now they’re fighting to hold on to their membership of a far more elite club

Michael Hussey and Marcus North have known each other since their childhood days in Perth playing for Wanneroo, but now they’re fighting to hold on to their membership of a far more elite club. When the Australian players step out on to the Gabba in ten days to battle for the Ashes, few in the team will be under more pressure than Hussey and North. That’s assuming they’re in the side. The presence of the prolific New South Wales batsman Usman Khawaja and the South Australian Callum Ferguson in the 17-man squad for the first Test has intensified the questions over whether Australia’s established batting group will survive the summer. At 35, and with only one century to his name in the past year, Hussey has the most to lose. Not that he’s showing any signs of panic.”I don’t think you can really worry about anyone else,” Hussey said after arriving in Melbourne for Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield match, starting at the MCG on Wednesday. “The most important thing is for me to try to concentrate on my preparation. Playing well in this Shield game against Victoria is the first thing to concentrate on, and help WA have a win. And then just to prepare as though I’m going to play in the Test match.”If you start clouding your mind worrying about other guys, or if they’re going to get picked, or if you’re not going to get picked, you’re taking your mind off what’s important. For me, the focus is on preparing to play and preparing to be part of that first Test match and not worrying about anyone else.”It’s a method that sounds good, but is easier said than done. Hussey failed in his most recent first-class outing, for the Warriors a fortnight ago, and while he’s facing up to the Victorians in Melbourne, Ferguson and Khawaja will be trying to feast on England’s second-string attack for Australia A at Bellerive Oval.North is in a similar situation. His century in Bangalore last month, and his hundred for Western Australia upon returning home have given him some breathing space, but he has less credits in the bank than the more experienced Hussey. Both men will be seriously vulnerable if they record a couple of failures, which makes it all the more important to succeed in this week’s Shield game and enter the Gabba Test with some confidence.”Not at all,” North said when asked if he was worried about the selection of Khawaja and Ferguson. “These guys have been performing well this season and the back end of last season. It’s a reflection of the domestic cricket. There’s always been good young players playing and scoring a lot of runs.”The fact that they’re in the squad is credit to their performances and it’s always an honour to be named in any squad, so it’s good to see those guys in. It is a big series and it is five Test matches. I’m more concerned about my preparation this week, going into this Shield game and, mentally and training-wise going into the first Test match.”At 31, North could feasibly fight his way back into the side if he lost his place this summer. The same cannot be said of Hussey, who will be doing well if he is able to leave Test cricket at a time of his own choosing. He entered the 2006-07 Ashes with an average of 75.93; he begins this campaign averaging 33.19 over the past two years, during which time he has managed only two centuries.”I’m actually pretty philosophical about it,” Hussey said of his extended lean period. “I understand how the game works. My first couple of years, you can’t keep those performances going forever, so you’ve got to expect there’s going to be a time when things don’t quite go your way. That’s the game of cricket – it’s a great leveller.”Hussey had better hope that great leveller doesn’t raze him to the ground.

Tottenham Hotspur: Contact made with ‘extraordinary’ target

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly ‘made contact’ with Paulo Dybala’s representatives ahead of a possible move to the Premier League this summer, according to ESPN journalist James Olley.

The Lowdown: Previous links

The 28-year-old, who currently plays for Juventus, did hold talks with the Lilywhites back in 2019 when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge, but they failed to reach an agreement before the transfer deadline due to issues with his image rights.

The striker is expected to leave the Serie A giants when his contract expires at the end of the current season though, and with four Premier League clubs said to be interested in his services, the chances of him staying in Italy beyond this campaign are now highly unlikely.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: ‘Made contact’

ESPN reporter Olley took to Twitter to confirm that Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Newcastle have all ‘made contact’ with Dybala’s team, though it’s believed that nothing is yet at an advanced stage.

Expanding in an article for ESPN, it’s claimed that Antonio Conte has ‘identified’ the 32-time international as an ideal target, ahead of his squad overhaul in preparation for the start of the new term.

The Verdict: Perfect target

If the opportunity arises for Spurs to sign the forward, then it’s an absolute no-brainer of a deal to try and get over the line.

The £222k-per-week star has been prolific for Juventus so far this season, where he has made an impressive 20 goal contributions in just 34 appearances in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

Once hailed for having an “extraordinary” technique by his former Palermo teammate Stefano Sorrentino, Dybala would be a wonderful option to have up top alongside the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min, and if the Italian boss can secure his signature, he could play a huge part in helping the north London outfit achieve a top four spot next year or even better.

Celtic: Pete O’Rourke makes Tom Rogic claim

A big Celtic transfer claim has emerged on Australian attacking midfielder Tom Rogic.

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Pete O’Rourke has stated that Ange Postecoglou wants his compatriot to put pen to paper on a fresh contract with the club.

His current deal expires in the summer of 2023 and the Hoops will risk losing him for nothing if they do not agree a new agreement this year.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “I think Celtic will be desperate to try to sit down and sort out his long-term future.

“They’ll want to keep him there because I think he’s got that little something extra that Celtic had been missing over the last 12 months.

“He’s been a big factor in their success and trying to win the title this year. If Postecoglou has got anything to do with it, he’ll be pushing Celtic to ensure they keep hold of Tom Rogic.”

Supporters will be buzzing

The supporters will surely be buzzing with this news as it shows that the club are keen to retain the Australian international’s services in the long term.

At the age of 29, Rogic still has plenty to give in a Celtic shirt and his form has warranted an extension. He is not a player in his late 30s and coming towards the end of his career and this means that the Hoops can afford to drop a three or four-year deal on him to ensure that he remains at Parkhead.

In the Premiership this season, he has produced six goals and six assists in 19 starts whilst averaging a SofaScore rating of 6.98. The midfielder has been a constant threat for Celtic in the final third as he has created 1.6 chances per game, showing that he is a key player for Postecoglou with his offensive quality on the pitch.

Rogic is also vastly experienced at this level. He has played 267 matches in all competitions for the club and 161 times in the league, which shows that he has the know-how to perform on a consistent basis. This experience can be vital to young players as they can learn from the Australian by soaking up the knowledge he can impart on them.

Therefore, fans will be eager for him to sign a new contract with the club and will be delighted with this claim from O’Rourke that suggests Postecoglou will push for an agreement to be completed.

Chris Gayle named Jamaica captain

Chris Gayle has been appointed Jamaica’s captain for the WICB President’s Cup instead of the regular captain Tamar Lambert, the Jamaican Cricket Association has confirmed

Chris Gayle has been appointed Jamaica’s captain for the WICB President’s Cup instead of the regular captain Tamar Lambert, the Jamaican Cricket Association (JCA) has confirmed. The one-day tournament, which begins in October, marks the start of the West Indies domestic season and will be held in Jamaica.”I can confirm that the selectors made a recommendation and the board of the Jamaica Cricket Association ratified the decision,” Paul Campbell, the JCA president, told . “The selectors took a look at the report of the [Caribbean] Twenty20, and figured that while Tamar Lambert represents a good choice of captain and in the longer version in particular, it was felt that at this time that Chris Gayle was a better choice for the one-dayers.”In July, the JCA had backed the selectors’ decision to nominate Lambert as captain for the Caribbean T20 instead of Gayle, who leads West Indies. They had also denied suggestions that Gayle was discarded as captain and said that Lambert was a logical choice as he had played regularly for Jamaica over the last few seasons, as opposed to Gayle, who had been busy with international commitments. Jamaica finished fourth in the domestic Twenty20 tournament and lost out on a place in the lucrative Champions League Twenty20.

Wayamba thrash Central Districts for consolation win

Isuru Udana’s exploits with the slower ball and Central Districts’ insipid performance with the bat helped Wayamba salvage a consolation win and inflict a fourth consecutive defeat on their opponents

Ajantha Mendis snapped up three wickets in Wayamba’s thumping win•AFP

Isuru Udana’s exploits with the slower ball and Central Districts’ insipid performance with the bat helped Wayamba salvage a consolation win and inflict a fourth consecutive defeat on their opponents. On a track hardly threatening for batting, Wayamba struggled through periods of stagnation to reach a score that appeared inadequate but Udana, whose stock ball is the slower delivery, made it a formidable one with the tournament’s first hat-trick. He was supported well by the spinners amid a spineless chase, which undermined a disciplined effort by the Central Districts bowlers early in the day.Central Districts had been the better of the two teams in the run-up to this game, particularly in their batting, and were favourites to avoid a whitewash after their bowlers had stifled Wayamba. There was little movement on offer, the pitch was slightly on the slower side and the bowlers had to earn their wickets with their variations. Ajantha Mendis reaped success with the googly, Rangana Herath bowled the carrom ball while Udana flummoxed the batsmen with deliveries that were just around the 100kmph mark. The frequency with which Udana delivers the slower ball would give you the impression the batsmen know what to expect. But the Central Districts top order, previously unexposed to his bowling, was unprepared and thoroughly deceived. The start to the chase gave little indication of what was to follow as the in-form Jamie How smacked Udana for a six and a four in the square-leg region. Mendis shared the new ball and delivered, removing How with a straighter delivery that caught him plumb and enabling Udana to target the rest. The slower delivery with the new ball proved lethal due to the accompanying bounce, snaring Brad Patton who was surprised with one that cut back in and spat to catch the leading edge. Mathew Sinclair was next, losing his balance to a wide down the leg side to be stumped. George Worker then probably guessed right but played inside the line to a delivery that didn’t nip back in as much as he expected and was bowled. Central Districts were 16 for 4 in the third over and Wayamba had seized control. The spinners then shut Central Districts out. Peter Ingram doesn’t like to move his feet and his failure to pick the googly resulted in a straightforward lbw; Kieran Noema-Barnett had a rush of blood when trying to catch up with the creeping required rate and holed out in the deep; Brendon Diamanti was done in by a quicker delivery from Herath, though replays suggested the ball brushed the pad on the way to the keeper; and Bevan Griggs, fighting a losing battle, fell victim to an outstanding catch by captain Jehan Mubarak, who leapt full length to his left and snapped the ball, already behind him, with one hand. Game over. That catch was preceded by a crucial contribution with the bat from Mubarak. Unlike their collapses against Chennai Super Kings and Victoria Bushrangers, the batsmen showed greater determination to occupy the crease and build the innings, but it wasn’t without struggle. Mahela Jayawardene hit the right notes with a positive start but his dismissal marked the beginning of a grind. The seamers had doled out some freebies and wides during their early stint but the introduction of Worker’s left-arm spin and Noema-Barnett’s medium pace choked the flow of runs.Mahela Udawatte was the main reason for Wayamba’s decline, failing to force the bowlers away. He limped to 23 off 37 balls before holing out to long-on while Mubarak had to compensate for the slow pace with some meaty hits.Mubarak broke a 23-ball boundary drought in the 10th over with a delicate guide off Worker to the third-man boundary and drilled Noema-Barnett for two sixes. But Central Districts struck back with his wicket and just five runs in the 16th and 17th overs. Too often the Wayamba batsmen made room but failed to connect while being consistently restrained by the spate of slower deliveries and blockhole lengths. The release Wayamba needed came in the penultimate over with Shalika Karunanayake hammering Seth Rance for a straight six and carting him over extra cover, helping pick 20 with wicketkeeper Kushal Perera. The late surge infused some respectability to the score. As it turned out, they’d got too far.

Leeds: Paul Hirst drops Phillips news

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips could the subject of a transfer offer from Manchester United following the appointment of Erik ten Hag as manager.

That’s according to Paul Hirst and Pol Ballus for The Times.

The lowdown

Phillips has come through the academy at Leeds United and established himself as a key figure, reaching 228 appearances for the club at the age of 26 and bagging 14 goals.

His £38,000-per-week contract – hardly impressive wages given his impact as a now England superstar – is due to expire at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Transfermarkt rate Phillips as the most valuable player at Elland Road with an estimated value of £45million, £4.5million more than winger Raphinha.

It could be the most lucrative sale in Leeds’ history, eclipsing Rio Ferdinand’s £41.4million move to Old Trafford in 2002.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Hirst tweeted on Friday morning that Man. United had granted Ten Hag a ‘£120m budget to save’ the ‘broken’ Red Devils.

In the attached story for The Times, published late on Thursday evening, he and Ballus write that Phillips is ‘viewed as a possible alternative’ to West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

Man. United have apparently been ‘put off’ by The Hammers’ £150million demands, with Phillips a cheaper plan B.

The verdict

It would certainly hurt to lose Phillips, who has been dubbed ‘phenomenal’ and ‘extraordinary’ by former England boss Fabio Capello and was named men’s player of the year for his country in 2021.

Leeds could reinvest the funds, but the problem is that he’s not the only star attracting interest.

Transfer insider Dean Jones says that ‘big clubs’ are also eyeing Raphinha ahead of the summer transfer window.

Losing both in one summer could be destabilising for the club ahead of Jesse Marsch’s first full season in Yorkshire, so don’t be surprised to see them dig in and resist offers for at least one of the players.

In other news, this Leeds man’s loan spell is now a disaster.
