Round-up of the fourth day of the fifth round of the Ranji Trophy Plate League

K Rakesh’s 72 not out pushed the game into the last session on the fourth day, but Andhra seamer P Vijaykumar mopped up the tail and finished with figures of 5 for 51 in the second innings. Andhra needed seven wickets to complete a win after a dominant performance on the second and third day. They got the first two within the first two overs on Saturday, with Sairaj Bahutule and D Kalyankrishna getting a wicket each. Rakesh’s effort then blunted them for a while, but could not deny them the win as Kerala were bowled out for 235.
Maharashtra reached the semi-finals by finishing a point ahead of Services despite conceding the first-innings lead to them at the Harbax Singh Stadium in Delhi. Services began the day 40 behind, and went on rack up a 175-run lead, thanks to their captain Yashpal Sharma’s unbeaten 203. He was supported by another Services stalwart, 36-year-old Sarabjit Singh, who made 75 as the pair added 175 for the sixth wicket. With Andhra winning, Services only chance of qualifying was an outright victory, but on a flat track, there was little hope of that and they delayed their declaration till Yashpal reached his double-century. Maharasthra had half the day to bat out, which they did comfortably, racing to 166 for 1 in 37 overs on the back of opener Nikhil Paradkar’s unbeaten 76.In the clash between the two laggards of the group, Vidarbha claimed their first victory of the season, but were made to work hard for it by the Jammu & Kashmir tail in Jammu. Vidarbha needed four wickets at the start of the day and J&K had to make 42 more to avoid an innings defeat, an ignominy they easily avoided due to Hardeep Singh’s maiden first-class century. The tail added 140 runs, setting Vidarbha a target of 99, which they knocked off in 26.3 overs with Ravi Jangid helping himself to a brisk 51.Group ARajasthan fell short of their third win of the campaign but weren’t too concerned as they still finished top of the group. They had a target of 27 after bowling out Jharkhand for 211 in Udaipur but there was no time left for Rajasthan to bat again. The match seemed headed for a dull draw after Jharkhand opener Aakash Verma’s 61 pushed them to 100 for 1 in 36 overs, before slumping to 150 for 7. Legspinner Vivek Yadav started the collapse by removing Verma, and Deepak Chahar, who shot to fame with his eight-for on debut when Hyderbad sunk to 21 all out earlier this season, then took three wickets in nine deliveries to leave Jharkhand reeling. Shiv Gautam battled to a patient 48 to consume enough overs to prevent defeat.Madhya Pradesh also reached the semi-finals after their match against Hyderabad predictably ended in a draw at the Gymkhana ground in Hyderabad. With the first innings still nowhere near completion at the start of the fourth day, the outcome was a foregone conclusion. Hyderabad resumed from 168 for 4 in their reply to MP’s 422 for 4 declared, and went on to reach 286 for 6 before the match was called off. The result left Hyderabad fourth in the group and consigned them to another season in the Plate Division.Tripura had the satisfaction of finishing off a forgettable season with a victory, cruising to a seven-wicket win over Goa in Porvorim. Four defeats in the first four matches meant they were destined for the bottom spot, but they didn’t have too much trouble finishing off Goa on the final day. Tripura snatched a wicket off the first over, and took the last one soon after to be left chasing 99 for victory. Thirties from Rajib Saha and Nishit Shetty confirmed the victory in 23.3 overs. Goa began the match with hopes of qualifying for the next round, but had to be content with third place after the defeat.

Frank Lampard has endured a horrific start to his Everton tenure so far, losing nine out of his 16 matches and winning only six times as his side have slipped further down the table, even occupying a place in the bottom three.

Relegation is a genuine possibility and, unless there are some heroic performances over the next couple of weeks, then the Toffees could well drop out of the Premier League for the first time.

A 1-0 victory over Chelsea last weekend could well be the start of a daring escape from the drop, and with a trip to Leicester to come on Sunday, there may be a glimmer of hope for Everton.

Lampard also confirmed some good news during his pre-match press conference.

Speaking about the availability of players for the visit to the King Power Stadium, the 43-year-old said: “No changes for us.

“We had a pretty good week with recovery for the lads, a couple of little niggles but hopefully we will be the same as we were (for Chelsea).”

Lampard & Everton fans will be happy

This will be music to Everton supporters’ ears, as they need all the positives they can get at the moment, and any further injuries could derail the much-needed momentum from triumphing against Chelsea.

The Toffees have been hit with a string of injuries throughout the campaign, with the likes of Tom Davies, Yerry Mina and Andros Townsend all hit with various spells out of the team and continuing to be sidelined.

This hasn’t helped matters but it cannot be used as an excuse for for a season which started off with so much hope but has sunk into a chaotic mess, and mere Premier League survival will not satisfy the fan base, who surely deserve better than a last-ditch scrap for their top-flight lives.

Everton face five cup finals between tomorrow and 22 May and they simply need to focus on one match at a time, starting with the trip to the King Power Stadium. At least Lampard’s revelation of no further injuries will offer a boost for him and the supporters ahead of the Leicester clash.

HBL fast bowler Sarmad Anwar took 4 for 84, while Shoaib Maqsood was the only batsman to get a half-century for WAPDA, scoring 79. Maqsood had put WAPDA in a solid position of 178 for 4 at one stage, before Sarmad ran through the tail and WAPDA lost their last six wickets for 61 runs.Fourteen wickets fell on the first day day at the Gymkhana Ground in Okara, as bottom-of-the-table Multan squandered their advantage against Sialkot. Multan bowled Sialkot out for 227 after putting them in to bat, thanks to fast bowler Abdur Rauf’s five-wicket haul and left-arm spinners Ahmed Raza’s four scalps. But by stumps, they had collapsed to 34 for 4 in response, conceding two wickets to each of Sialkot’s new-ball duo of Waqas Ahmed and Prince Abbas. Sialkot left-arm spinner Nabeel Malik was the only batsman to reach a half-century on the first day, getting 78 off 86 balls.It was another wicket-fest at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad, where Islamabad finished the day at 93 for 3, after bundling out Faisalabad for 181. Captain Kamran Sajid anchored PIA’s innings, getting 94 not out, but SNGPL managed to get enough wickets at the other end to keep them in the game. Em 2013, conquistou a Copa do Brasil e, no ano seguinte, foi campeão carioca no comando do time. Como jogador do Flamengo, foi campeão carioca em 1974.

O preparador físico Marcelo Martorelli também deixa a comissão técnica.

José Carlos Nepomuceno Mozer, por sua vez foi um dos maiores zagueiros da história do Flamengo, tricampeão nacional em 1980, 1982 e 1983, além de conquistar a Copa Libertadores da América e o Mundial Interclubes, em 1981.

Sua passagem pelo Flamengo como gerente de futebol começou em junho de 2016 e foi marcado por algumas polêmicas. A atuação do ex-jogador diante do elenco foi muito questionada, principalmente sua capacidade de cobrar os resultados, além da pouca atuação do profissional diante da imprensa, e da torcida, nos momentos de crise.

What’s the word?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT this week, the Eurosport journalist claimed that the Nottingham Forest sensation has a higher ceiling than both the Whites’ club-record signing and reported summer target Ryan Kent.

Jones said: “In terms of where their ceiling is, I think that Brennan Johnson is as high as both those players. I think he could probably shine brighter than both of them long-term too.”

The Yorkshire giants have long held an interest in the Rangers star, and with Raphinha likely to depart Elland Road in the off-season, a new wide option could well be needed.

Johnson has also been linked with a move to Leeds in recent months, with the Daily Mail reporting that the club would prepare a bid for the Forest gem if they maintain their place in the Premier League. The Reds value the 20-year-old dynamo at around £20m.

James upgrade

Indeed, Johnson could be the man for Leeds manager Jesse Marsch, as James has not enjoyed the best of debut seasons in west Yorkshire.

After costing around £30m from Manchester United, there was a lot of anticipation and excitement as the Whites finally got their man, some 18 months after narrowly missing out on him in January 2019.

However, he has been quite disappointing, having only contributed four goals and five assists from 33 appearances and failing to find the net in his last 12 outings, via Transfermarkt.

In the past, his decision-making in the final third has been described as “headless” by Darren Bent and we’re still very much seeing signs of that, especially when he’s leading the line in the absence of injured Patrick Bamford.

Only two Leeds players to have started 20 or more league games this term have managed a poorer average rating than James (6.48). Six other Whites players have provided more key passes (0.8) than the Wales international, too.

His Dragons teammate could well be a massive upgrade, particularly in the long run. For Steve Cooper’s promotion-chasing Forest, Johnson has delivered a whopping 15 goals and ten assists across 45 appearances in the Championship this term, averaging 1.3 key passes per outing.

That’s over double the returns of James during his final season at Swansea City, where his form caught the eye of Manchester United.

Once dubbed an “unbelievable player” by his former Forest manager Sabri Lamouchi and “special” by ex-teammate Glen Murray, Johnson could be the ideal signing for Leeds this summer.

On the above evidence, there is a lot to suggest that the 20-year-old would be a way better choice than James heading into 2022/23.
