Lost wickets at the wrong time – Dhoni

MS Dhoni has said that losing wickets “at the wrong time” prevented India from successfully chasing the target of 243 after they bowled West Indies out for 134 in Mumbai

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Nov-2011MS Dhoni has said that losing wickets “at the wrong time” prevented India from successfully chasing down 243 in Mumbai.India had bowled West Indies out for 134 in a dramatic first session, in which eight wickets fell for 43 runs. That left them 243 to get in 64 overs, but playing shots on the fifth-day wicket was difficult, according to Dhoni. “Most of our dismissals were at the wrong time,” he said. “Some kind of partnerships were going on [and] we lost a wicket. That put pressure back on us.”Most of the batsmen who got out were the ones who were playing shots. I won’t say it was very easy. It was quite easy to stay at the wicket, but difficult to score runs. A few of us thought that if we can rotate strike and look for those singles, it will become a bit easy as the game progresses. But that [attempted singles] really went to the fielders and added more pressure.”The track offered assistance for both spinners and fast bowlers, Dhoni said. “I think there was bit of bounce for the bowlers, particularly the spinners. For the fast bowlers, the ball stopped. Once you looked to play a shot you had to be really careful, as you had to be to the pitch of the ball. If not, then you got out [caught] in the covers or midwicket.”With West Indies 81 for 2 overnight, the possibility of a win had seemed remote at the start of the day but R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha ran through the West Indies line-up in under two hours. Dhoni said his team had kept in mind the importance of picking up wickets in the first hour. “If you don’t get wickets in the first hour, the more runs they add means we will get less time to chase. But the bowlers bowled really well. We were able to get a good number of wickets and got them all out before lunch. That gave us the opportunity to chase down the target.MS Dhoni on R Ashwin: “If he scores runs that is a bonus for our side. Don’t put pressure on him.”•AFP

“We never started thinking [of] it as a draw. We tried to create a bit of panic [while bowling] and I think most of the time we were able to put pressure on them. That was one of the main reasons we were successful in the first session.”Dhoni was satisfied with the performance of his bowling attack in the series. Though the spinners picked up the bulk of the wickets, Dhoni also praised Ishant Sharma, who he felt created consistent pressure that was not reflected in his series’ return of five wickets at 67.40. “You have seen plenty of times that when bowlers [are] bowling well, the batsman doesn’t edge to the slips and when edges come there is no slip fielder or [it falls] short of the fielder. He [Ishant] was consistently bowling well and he was coming up, with regards to the pace, and he was bowling in the right areas. I was happy overall [with] the way he bowled.”Apart from Ishant and Ojha, India’s bowlers – Varun Aaron, Umesh Yadav and Ashwin – were in their debut series. Despite their inexperience, they managed to do what was needed, Dhoni said. “There will come a time when senior players will retire and [there is] no point putting pressure on youngsters [saying] ‘will they able to get as many as wickets as [Anil] Kumble or Harbhajan [Singh] did?’ They bowled well. There was nothing for them [in the pitches] but they did not let the opposition [get away] freely. There was not much turn for them. They had to keep it tight at the same time. Overall, very happy [with the way] they bowled throughout the series.”Ashwin took 22 wickets in the series to finish the top wicket-taker, and also performed with the bat, scoring his maiden Test century in Mumbai. Dhoni said Ashwin’s primary responsibility in the side, though, was as a bowler. “Let him take wickets. That is the main priority. If he scores runs that is a bonus for our side. Don’t put [extra] pressure on him.”With two half-centuries in the match, Virat Kohli displayed his potential, but could not push on to get a hundred. Despite being well-set on 63, he cut a short and wide delivery to gully with India only 19 runs away from victory. Dhoni said that this was a learning phase in Kohli’s career and something that would help his game in the future. “You learn a lot from these games, so the next time he is in the same situation he may bat in a different way.”Even the most experienced players tend to make these types of mistakes. There is nothing to worry about; if you learn from each and every game, that really improves you as a cricketer. I am hoping he [Kohli] learns a lot [from this match].”

Kartik gets five in Railways' first victory

A round-up of the action from the third day of the fifth round of matches from the Ranji Trophy Elite League 2011-12

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Dec-2011Group AFormer India left-arm spinner Murali Kartik picked up his second five-for of the season to help Railways to an incredible victory by an innings and 94 runs with a day to spare against Uttar Pradesh at the Mohan Meakins Cricket Stadium in Ghaziabad. Having been dismissed for 79, the eighth-lowest total in Ranji history, UP put up more of a fight the second time around, but lost wickets at regular intervals.Sanjay Bangar and Krishnakant Upadyay, Railways’ new-ball bowlers responsible for Uttar Pradesh’s downfall in the first innings, got rid of overnight pair of Bhuvenesh Kumar and Mohammad Kaif before lunch. Kartik, who had bowled just one over in the previous innings, overwhelmed the lower order, picking five of the last six wickets to fall and seal Railways’ first victory of the season. For Uttar Pradesh this was the second time in two years they were beaten at home. If last year it was Haryana, this time Railways enjoyed a hearty laugh at the expense of their hosts.Railways had suffered two huge defeats at the start of the season, but now with this win they have ten points in the bag and will be positive about their knockout chances with two home games against Orissa and Saurashtra. In contrast Uttar Pradesh play favourites Mumbai and Karnataka in the next two rounds. “We did not bat well at all. Now we have our backs to the wall,” Gynanedra Pandey, UP coach, said of his team’s predicament.Saurashtra achieved the enviable honour of inflicting the follow-on for the second time in three years against Mumbai, who finished 220 runs short of their opponent’s first-innings target on the penultimate day. Full report here.An unbroken 185-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Robin Bist and Rashmi Parida kept Rajasthan’s hopes alive against Punjab. At stumps on the penultimate day the defending champions were 321 for 4 in pursuit of 597 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. They still need another 126 runs to avoid the follow-on and 276 to take the lead. The hosts started the day on a steady note as their most experienced batting pair of Aakash Chopra and Hrishikesh Kanitkar played patiently in the first hour. But immediately after the drinks break Chopra was cleaned up by Birender Sran. At 136 for 4, Rajasthan were in deep trouble but Bist and Parida combined well to quell Punjab’s determined bowling attack, which missed Manpreet Gony, who sat out after bowling 11 overs due to a side strain. The match between Karnataka and Orissa at the East Coast Railway Sports Association in Bhubaneshwar is set for an interesting final day after the visitors finished the third 192 runs ahead with four wickets remaining.Karnataka threatened to pull away at 80 for 1 in their second innings, after taking a 23-run first-innings lead, but diligent bowling on a helpful pitch by Orissa’s bowling attack had the visitors wobbling at 114 for 5. But Amit Verma, who already has a century this season in Mumbai, dug in deep and found support from Sunil Raju, to take Karnataka to 169 for 6. At the start of play Orissa needed 67 runs to take the lead and the eighth-wicket pair of Govind Podder and Basanth Mohanty gave Karnataka pair a scare with a stoic 30-run alliance. But Stuart Binny cleaned up Podder as Orissa eventually managed to add 44 runs to their overnight score of 211 for 7. Binny picked up two wickets on the day, enough to bag his maiden five-for (5-87).Group BAmbati Rayudu’s second hundred of the season helped Baroda set Gujarat a daunting target of 365 to win on the last day at the Moti Bagh Stadium in Vadodara.Baroda had ended the second day 43 runs ahead with the match still in the balance. But they took control on the third, thanks to Rayudu’s 105 that helped them 330 in their second innings. Rayudu had to deal with losing partners at fairly regular intervals – the highest partnership of the innings was 77 for the sixth wicket – but kept playing his strokes, maintaining a strike-rate of 77.20 in an innings that contained 18 fours and a six. Gujarat had an opening at 174 for 5, but Shatrunjay Gaekwad and Abhimanyu Chauhan chipped in with 30s to take the match to a position where Baroda look the only likely winners.Six wickets in the day from seamer Yo Mahesh left Tamil Nadu needing six wickets to beat Bengal, who were still 52 runs behind at Eden Gardens. Mahesh took four in Bengal’s first innings, in which they were bowled out for 176 and made to follow-on. He then struck twice early in Bengal’s second innings, sending back both openers. A counterattacking unbeaten half-century from Laxmi Ratan Shukla, his second of the match, gave Bengal some hope but they will have a tough fight on their hands on the final day.Bengal had a horrific start to the day: they slipped from 84 for 2 to 87 for 5 within the first six overs, all three wickets falling to Mahesh. Shukla tried to get Bengal back in the game and hit eight fours and two sixes in his 62 off 59 balls. But wickets kept tumbling at the other end, and Bengal conceded a 215-run first-innings lead.Their second innings was rocked early: they slipped to 8 for 2 before a 64-run stand for the third wicket between Shreevats Goswami and Writam Porel steadied them briefly. The pair was dismissed in quick succession and Bengal were in danger of losing by an innings. Shukla, though, produced his second half-century of the match, reaching 50 not out off 55 balls by stumps. For company, he had Sourav Ganguly, who had taken a more measured approach on the way to 28 not out off 68 balls.A century from Naman Ojha has made Madhya Pradesh favourites to beat Delhi at the Emerald High School Ground in Indore, though three wickets late in the day set up a tense finish. MP needed 59 runs more to snatch a victory with five wickets in hand.It had looked like MP would cruise to the total when Ojha and Devendra Bundela took them to 187 for 2 with a 186-run partnership. However, seamer Rajat Bhatia kept Delhi in the game with three strikes that left MP 240 for 5 at stumps. Ojha and Bundela’s stand came after two wickets had fallen off consecutive balls in the second over of MP’s chase, bowled by Parvinder Awana. Ojha was the aggressor, striking at 72.29 and hitting four sixes in his 107, while Bundela was more patient while scoring 68. Ojha was lucky to get away when on 13, 82 and 96, as Delhi fielded sloppily all through.

O São Paulo é favorito diante do César Vallejo (PER)?

O que espera do time peruano?

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Nov-2011Group B Maharashtra surged to a two-day innings-and-six-run win after a shocking collapse from Hyderabad at Uppal. Sixteen wickets fell in the day with Maharashtra first going from 63 for 4 to 184 and Hyderabad then getting skittled for 54 in a batting performance that would have induced memories of their 21 all out at the beginning of last season. Left-arm spinner Akshya Darekar was the chief destroyer, taking an incredible 8 for 20. Darekar had not taken a five-wicket haul in his seven previous first-class games but took two in the same match at Uppal. Only two of Hyderabad’s batsmen reached double figures and there were four ducks in the innings.Hyderabad had only managed 124 in their first innings but started the second day well, taking an early wicket to leave Maharashtra 67 for 5. Darekar then put together a 78-run partnership with Kedar Jadhav to give Maharashtra the first-innings lead. Jadhav was aggressive and hit 62 off just 43 balls including 11 fours. Offspinner Syed Quadri removed the last five of Maharashtra’s batsmen to finish with 5 for 28. Hyderabad had a 60-run deficit to contend with but did not even manage to make Maharashtra bat again.

Goa overcame a hat-trick by Abu Nechim to go ahead by 82 runs in their match against Assam at the Nehru Stadium in Guwhati thanks to an unbeaten century by 20-year-old Reagan Pinto. Nechim’s hat-trick, in the 32nd over of the day, left Goa 85 for 6 in response to Assam’s 195. Nechim got his fifth wicket to make it 101 for 7 and it looked like Assam would take the first-innings lead. But Pinto forged together partnerships with the tail to take Goa to 277 for 8 by stumps. Robin D’Souza, captaining in the absence of the suspended Swapnil Asnodkar, contributed 35 at No. 9 and shared a 95-run partnership with Pinto. No. 10 Amit Yadav then got 38 not out and had added 81 runs with Pinto by stumps. Pinto, who shot to prominence with consecutive centuries last season, now has three hundreds in his last five first-class games.

There was no play on the second day of the match between Jammu & Kashmir and Jharkhand at the Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium in Srinagar due to a wet outfield. Only 11 overs had been possible on the first day in which J&K raced to 59 for 0.

Group AAndhra Pradesh secured a 61-run first-innings lead against Tripura at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Vijayawada by bowling Tripura out for 174 on the second day. Tripura then had Andhra 47 for 3 at stumps and will hope to force a collapse. Tripura began the day on 34 for 2 in response to Andhra’s 235. That was soon 50 for 4 as seamer Paidikalva Vijaykumar struck twice. Subhrajit Roy tried holding the innings together and scored 54 off 222 balls. But he could not find anyone to stay at the other end and was eventually the ninth man dismissed. A few contributions from the lower order pushed Tripura to 174 when they were 87 for 7 at one time, but they still conceded the first-innings lead. Andhra came out to face 19 overs, and were soon 15 for 3, but Bodapati Sumanth and Venugopal Rao shared a 32-run unbeaten stand at the end of the day.

Eighteen wickets fell in the day in Dharmasala and Vidarbha were left needing 241 more runs to beat Himachal Pradesh with all ten wickets in hand. It will be a tough task on a pitch where the highest score so far has been 200, by Himachal in their second innings. The hosts’ new-ball pair of Rishi Dhawan and Vikramjeet Malik took nine wickets between them as Vidarbha were bowled out for 142 in response to Himachal’s 195. Vidarbha started the day 40 for 2 and none of their batsmen scored more than 25. Dhawan finished with 5 for 60, his third five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. Then it was the turn of Vidarbha’s new-ball bowlers, Shrikant Wagh and Sandeep Singh, to help themselves to wickets. Sandeep took 5 for 41 to give him nine wickets in the match, as Himachal were bowled out for 200 in 50.1 overs. Their scorecard looked similar to Vidarbha’s with the exception of Sridharan Sriram’s 87 off 101 balls, easily the best individual score of the match. That left Vidarbha chasing 254 and they reached 13 for 0 in the two overs they had to play out before stumps.

Services collapsed from their overnight 198 for 5 to 253 all out at the Nehru Stadium in Kochi. In response Kerala made slow progress, getting to 121 for 4 in 65.2 overs, leaving the match finely balanced. Sarabjit Singh was bowled off the second ball of the morning by Sony Cheruvathur, and captain Yashpal Singh followed followed two overs later in similar fashion. Muzzaffaruddin Khalid and Suraj Yadav added 43 runs for the eighth wicket but then the last three wickets fell for five runs. Kerala crawled in their response. They lost their first wicket in the 34th over but had only scored 54 runs. VA Jagadeesh scored 50 off 160 balls before becoming the second man to be dismissed. At that stage Kerala were 108 for 2 and had a firm base, but two quick wickets fell at the end of the day to bring Services back into the match.

Captain White seeks runs and wins

Cameron White has flown out for South Africa with his Twenty20 squad

As well as leading a young side, Cameron White hopes to find some personal form in South Africa•Associated Press

These are challenging times for Cameron White. Now officially a Twenty20 selector after the Argus review recommended captains join the panel in each format, White flew out for South Africa on Saturday needing not only to choose and inspire his young team-mates, but also turn around his own form.As White departed for next week’s two Twenty20s, he knew that within ten days, he would be on his way home again. No longer part of the one-day international squad, having lost his place soon after the World Cup, White has only two chances to get things right on this trip.He is one of five members of the T20 squad – along with David Hussey, Matthew Wade, Aaron Finch and Mitchell Marsh – who will head home after the matches in Cape Town and Johannesburg, not required for the three ODIs that follow. Having not scored a half-century in his past 21 innings for Australia across both formats, dating back to last October, White knows he needs some runs under his belt to force his way back in.”I’d love to be playing one-day cricket,” White told ESPNcricinfo this week. “That’s the way it is. I’m desperate to get back into the side. Part of that is going to be scoring runs for Victoria, which is something to focus on when I get back.”Something he needs to focus on in the meantime is Australia’s poor recent record in T20 cricket. They have won just one of their past eight matches in the format, and one of four since White took over the full-time captaincy in January.Turning that slump around against South Africa on their home turf won’t be easy but like Australia, South Africa have named a squad with a few new faces. Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn have been rested, while AB de Villiers is out due to a broken finger and Albie Morkel has also been sidelined by an abdominal muscle tear.”They are some very big losses for them,” White said. “They’re pretty extraordinary players and big losses. But no doubt they’re a strong country and they’ll have very good replacements.”Australia know all about finding replacements. Brad Haddin’s recent retirement from T20 internationals, combined with Tim Paine’s broken finger, will lead to a debut for the Victoria wicketkeeper Wade, while the season-ending shoulder injury to the allrounder John Hastings allowed Mitchell Marsh his first national call-up.Marsh and his brother Shaun will become the second set of siblings to play T20 internationals for Australia, after Michael and David Hussey. Mitchell Marsh showed promising signs during the recent Australia A series in Zimbabwe and Shaun said playing with his brother would be a wonderful experience.”Obviously when Mitch got picked it was a very proud moment for both of us and for the family,” Shaun Marsh said. “He certainly deserves his opportunity. He performed very well in the Australia A tour to South Africa earlier this year and hopefully we can get a game together and do well.”Remarkably, at 19 Mitchell Marsh is not the youngest member of the squad, with the 18-year-old fast bowler Patrick Cummins also in line for his international debut. But arguably the most exciting part of Australia’s build-up to the South Africa Twenty20s has been the breathtaking form of the opener David Warner.Warner will join the squad from India, where he has been playing for New South Wales in the Champions League T20, and in his final two innings of the tournament, he has scored 135 not out and an unbeaten 123. That’s on top of a double-hundred and 152 that he made for Australia A in July. The first Twenty20 will be played at Newlands on Thursday, before the teams head to the Wanderers for the second game on Sunday.
