Wilson may miss Newcastle vs Tottenham

Steve Bruce has dropped a very worrying piece of early team news as Newcastle United play Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match at St. James’ Park against the North London club, the former Aston Villa and Sunderland boss claimed: “I wouldn’t have thought Callum will be available.”

Newcastle need Wilson

The North East club will need Wilson to be back onto the pitch as soon as possible in order to give them the best possible chance of avoiding being relegated from the top flight down to the EFL Championship.

The former AFC Bournemouth ace has emerged as their main man so far in the 2020/21 term, as he has scored more goals and made more assists than any other player at the Tyneside club in the league, with 10 and five respectively (Whoscored).

He offers more than just his goals and assists as well, as he is able to stretch defenders with his pace and movement and thus allow other players like Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron to thrive in attacking areas.

Nonetheless, the Magpies may have to try and find a way of beating Spurs without their talisman, which will not be an easy task by any stretch of the imagination.

Dilshan calls for mandatory Hot Spot

Tillakaratne Dilshan remains convinced he did not edge the delivery to which he was given out on the fourth day against England

Tillakaratne Dilshan remains convinced he did not edge the delivery to which he was given out on the fourth day against England at the P Sara Oval and has called for Hot Spot to be made mandatory in all Test and one-day cricket.Dilshan was adjudged caught at slip off Graeme Swann by Bruce Oxenford and immediately signalled for a review. The third umpire, Rod Tucker, took an age looking at the images but without the infra-red cameras he ruled there was no conclusive evidence to advise the on-field umpire he had made an error.”I feel 100% that I didn’t edge the ball that’s why I went straight for the review,” he said. “I can’t control the decisions. You have to respect it. But I can suggest one thing. The DRS that applies to Test or one-day cricket should have Hot Spot then there will be more correct decisions. Unfortunately Hot Spot is not there and a few decisions were very difficult for the umpire without it.”When Oxenford confirmed his decision Dilshan stood, dumbstruck, at the crease for a moment before slowing trudging to the pavilion where he threw his helmet to the ground. Graham Ford, the Sri Lanka coach, also visited the match referee to demand answers about the incident.Earlier on Friday Dilshan had been fined 10% of his match fee for excessive appealing during the third day and his frustrations at his dismissal could prompt another word from the match referee. “I was just a bit disappointed and my helmet when a bit further than I meant,” he said. “I wanted a big score and that’s why I was disappointed.”It is the second time in the match that the lack of Hot Spot has been highlighted. On the first day England thought they had Thilan Samaraweera caught at short leg and asked for review but it remained a not out decision. Following that Steven Finn, who was the bowler involved, said he would like to see Hot Spot available all the time. However, due to the cost of the cameras, which is carried by the host board and host broadcaster, that remains out of reach for the likes of Sri Lanka, who are struggling financially. The full DRS, including Hot Spot, was only available for the Pakistan-England series in the UAE because the PCB found a sponsor to offset the cost.Sri Lanka’s mood stemming from perceived injustice at Dilshan’s decision will not have been improved by the two late blows from Swann that left them 33 runs ahead with four wickets left and struggling to hold onto their 1-0 series lead. However, Dilshan was confident they could still save – or even win – the match, especially after England’s failed attempt to chase 145 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.”We believe if we can bat the first session tomorrow we can win the Test,” he said. “It’s not an easy wicket and won’t be easy to chase 130-140. They couldn’t chase 140, this is a five day wicket and Rangana Herath is in good form.”Edited by Alan Gardner

Nasir Jamshed, Sarfraz Ahmed in Pakistan squad

Pakistan have dropped two batsmen, Shoaib Malik and Imran Farhat, and picked left-hand opener Nasir Jamshed and wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed in their squad for the Asia Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Mar-2012Pakistan have dropped Shoaib Malik, Imran Farhat and Adnan Akmal from the squad that lost the ODIs 4-0 to England, and picked opener Nasir Jamshed and wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed for the Asia Cup in Bangladesh. Fast bowler Junaid Khan was not considered for selection because he was sidelined with a knee injury.Pakistan squad for Asia Cup

Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Mohammad Hafeez, Nasir Jamshed, Younis Khan, Umar Akmal, Hammad Azam, Asad Shafiq, Shahid Afridi, Azhar Ali, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), Saeed Ajmal, Abdur Rehman, Umar Gul, Aizaz Cheema, Wahab Riaz.
In: Nasir Jamshed, Sarfraz Ahmed.
Out: Shoaib Malik, Imran Farhat, Adnan Akmal.
Reserves: Ahmed Shehzad, Rahat Ali, Bilawal Bhatti, Afaq Rahim.

The 15-man squad was the first selection by the committee headed by Iqbal Qasim, who replaced Mohammad Ilyas as chief selector. The selectors had met with Pakistan’s new coach Dav Whatmore, whose first assignment will be the Asia Cup, in Lahore on March 2 to pick the team.”We have selected the best possible squad for the Asia Cup in the shortest time available, and since Malik was an additional member for the England series we couldn’t find a place for him in the 15-man squad,” Qasim said. “We did consult Misbah and he agreed to the selection.”We had to maintain the balance keeping view of the pitches in Bangladesh. But now we have to compete with quality teams, especially Sri Lanka, who returned to form, and India will obviously come hard after the Australia tour.”Jamshed has played 12 ODIs for Pakistan, the last of which was in August 2009. He has just been in Bangladesh, where he played for the Chittagong Kings in the BPL. Before going to Bangladesh, Jamshed had scored 320 runs at 53.33 in four matches for Punjab in the Pentangular Cup, a first-class competition in Pakistan. Sarfraz replaced Adnan Akmal as the specialist wicketkeeper in the squad; he played for Pakistan as recently as December 2011, during the tour of Bangladesh.”Jamshed earned his recall only after he has done well in the domestic circuit as an opener,” Qasim said. “There was an added pressure on Umar [Akmal] and this is why he might not giving his best with the bat. He always was selected as a designated batsman, we wanted a batting wicketkeeper who can bat effectively in ODIs to score quick runs.”Qasim said that the Asia Cup would be Sarfraz’s last chance to seal his place in the Pakistan team. “It’s our inability that we don’t have a batting wicketkeeper but this would be the last chance for [Sarfraz Ahmed] to step up and do well with the bat. Otherwise, after the series, we are starting the talent hunt for an all-round wicketkeeper.”While Junaid’s absence from the squad may have been forced, the other three – Malik, Farhat and Adnan Akmal did not perform impressively against England in the UAE. Malik, who was not in Pakistan’s original ODI and Twenty20 squads against England but included later at the request of the captain Misbah-ul-Haq, averaged 15 in two one-dayers. Farhat scored 66 runs in three matches, while Adnan Akmal played only two ODIs; his brother Umar kept in the matches that Adnan was not selected for.Edited by George Binoy

Everton to listen to Sigurdsson bids

Gylfi Sigurdsson may have sold his own sale to Everton last month, with the Iceland international now potentially on the club’s summer transfer list.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the Toffees are willing to listen to offers for Sigurdsson in the next transfer window as at least one key player is likely to leave Goodison Park.

Carlo Ancelotti and Director of Football Marcel Brands are thought to be planning a reshape of the ranks on Merseyside, with only eight players nailed on for a future in royal blue.

Prized assets Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison are considered to be the Blues’ most valuable players, while Jordan Pickford, Lucas Digne, Ben Godfrey, Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez are all expected to be retained at all costs.

Sigurdsson has been a key player for Ancelotti throughout the Italian’s tenure at Goodison Park, starting 30 and featuring in 44 of his 47 Premier League games in charge while captaining the side on 12 occasions to date.

But the £100,000-per-week playmaker will enter the final year of his contract in the summer and as he turns 32 in September, Everton are willing to take a sizable hit on the £45m paid to Swansea City for his services in 2017.

Toffees chiefs do not feel Sigurdsson has lived up to his price tag with 23 goals and 16 assists in 126 top-flight appearances, of which four and four have come this season as a set-piece specialist.

Sigurdsson was touted to be on the move last summer as part of Ancelotti’s first attempt at a Goodison Park clear-out, but he remained on Merseyside and was backed to earn a new contract at the turn of the year after a strong vein of form.

Should Everton sell Sigurdsson?

Much can change between now and the end of the season, but Everton agreeing to sell Sigurdsson would remove one of Ancelotti’s most creative weapons, even if the end results have not always been there for the £16m-rated maestro.

Only Rodriguez (1.7) and Digne (1.4) have offered a higher average number of key passes per game in the Premier League this season than Sigurdsson (1.1), with the trio the only Toffees players currently creating more than one goalscoring opportunity each outing, per WhoScored.

And not only is Rodriguez performing at a higher standard than Sigurdsson, but the Colombian also appears to be the one Ancelotti covets the most with reports that the Italian is eying moves for Real Madrid duo Lucas Vazquez and Isco to keep the midfielder on board.

Bringing in either to convince Rodriguez to stay will offer added competition for Sigurdsson, who recently suggested that exceptions have to be made for the Blues pair to play together.

“I personally feel we can play in the same team, and I’m sure the manager thinks so too as we’ve played some games together. Obviously, we can’t play in the same position, so we’re going to have to work around that,” Sigurdsson told Sky Sports.

“He’s fantastic on the ball, technically very good, can see passes that no one else sees, and has got an eye for goal. We’re players that aren’t going to be playing out wide with much pace.”

Ancelotti and Brands can both use Sigurdsson’s comments as justification as to why his sale will make sense in the summer with Rodriguez the one more in favour, making his words a rather big mistake if the 31-year-old wishes to remain at Goodison Park for another season.

AND in other news, Carlo Ancelotti can delight an unsettled Everton ace with a summer swoop for his £13.5m-rated ex-teammate

Niall O’Brien, the Ireland wicketkeeper-batsman, has not been picked in the Ireland squad for the tour of Kenya. O’Brien’s participation in the Bangladesh Premier League makes his unavailable for part of the tour. He also hasn’t been picked in the squad for the ICC World T20 qualifier in the UAE in March. The tour of Kenya includes a four-day Intercontinental Cup match, two World Cup qualifying ODIs as part of the ICC’s 50-over league and three Twenty20s. O’Brien said he would be available for the ODIs but the selectors said all players must be available for all parts of the tour, and didn’t pick him.”There were difficult matters for the selectors to discuss regarding Niall O’Brien’s availability,” Phil Simmons, the Ireland coach, said in a release. “They took on board Niall’s offer to play in only the ODIs in Kenya, join the squad for part of the South Africa camp, and then the ICC World T20 Qualifier.”However the selectors remained consistent to their principle, regarding that all players must be available for all parts of the tour. Niall was not able to make himself available for the whole tour and therefore the selectors have decided not to select him for any part of the tour including the ICC World T20 Qualifier.”We are only selecting for this tour and the next selection will be for the RSA Challenge ODI versus Australia in June; at that point they will consider all available players. Niall has communicated that he still wishes to play for Ireland and the selectors will take that into consideration when they next meet.”O’Brien was picked up by Khulna Royal Bengal for US$80,000 at the BPL auctions; the tournament runs from February 9-20. O’Brien, 30, has been a key player for Ireland in their top order and is vastly experienced, having played 49 ODIs and 98 first-class matches. The Ireland squad will be led by William Porterfield. Albert van der Merwe will only play in the Intercontinental Cup match between February 12-15, and Nigel Jones will join the squad from February 15 to take part in the ODIs and the T20s.Ireland also announced a provisional squad of 17 for the ICC World T20 Qualifier in the UAE; a squad of 14 will be selected from this on February 12. The squad will also participate in a warm-up preparation camp in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
