Arsenal: Mesut Ozil attracting interest from Saudi Arabia and Qatar

Speculation will refuse to go away around the future of Mesut Ozil at Arsenal, and recent transfer reports see the midfielder linked with a move abroad.

According to The Telegraph, the former World Cup winner with Germany is attracting interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

No offers have yet been made but there is one clear impediment to any potential exit for the 31-year-old, namely that he has no intention of leaving the club until his contract runs out next summer.

It is crazy to think that a player who came from Real Madrid and has won a La Liga title, plus four FA Cups with Arsenal as well as the World Cup and European Under-21 Championship with Germany (per Transfermarkt) is now such an outcast that he hasn’t played a single minute since football resumed in June.

Despite managing on average 2.1 key passes a game, Ozil – who is on £350,000-a-week – only managed one goal and two assists in all competitions last season, per WhoScored, and this poor return does not justify his extortionate salary, which adds up to £18.2 million a year.

It would be best for the club to sell him now as he could otherwise leave on a free next summer, but they are unable to do so as he seemingly refuses to leave. Arsenal have definitely been taught a lesson in this ongoing saga as they must realise that they should not just give players so much money to keep them at the club when they might not stay in the plans of the manager.

Weston Homes Stadium

Key information about Weston Homes Stadium

Weston Homes Stadium was built in 1913 and now houses the League One side Peterborough United. The ground is located in the city of Peterborough in England and has seen complete redevelopment since its erection.

Its current capacity stands at 15,314 and it has a pitch that measures 102m by 69m. The surface is covered with natural grass but the ground doesn’t have undersoil heating installed nor a running track surrounding it.

The record attendance at Weston Homes Stadium was set during an FA Cup tie against Swansea Town in 1965 when there were 30,096 fans watching.

A history of Weston Homes Stadium

Back when it was first constructed, the Weston Homes Stadium, or London Road Stadium as it was originally known before all the sponsorship deals, had only a solitary wooden stand that could host around 250 spectators. In 1923, however, Peterborough & Fletton United made the ground their home and started the very first redevelopments.

That same year, a new stand was erected and now it could house 650 people. In the following years, the Weston Homes Stadium remained under the ownership of the council and it wasn’t until Peterborough United’s formation in 1934 that the club finally settled in.

As a sign of backing the new tenants, the council built brick dressing rooms and a committee room, which would basically last until the late 1950s when the present North Stand was constructed. But before the club could invest further into their home, they fell into despair with no money and debts accumulating fast. The years throughout World War II were tough and Peterborough would’ve surely lost the ground and possibly more were it not for two individuals who saved them by paying off the £50 owed in rent by the club.

After the War, terracing and a covered shelter were built at the popular London Road end and in the years following that, the Council negotiated a long term lease with the club and eventually sold Weston Homes Stadium to Peterborough United during the 1950s. It was also back then that the new redevelopments had started.

Their main source of money and investment arrived from the flourishing Supporters’ Club and the first project in 1953 was the erection of new covered terracing behind the Moy’s End goal along with a new facility following a couple of years down the line that was situated behind the London Road End goal. This was also followed by a new stand in the 1957/58 campaign and after that, the pitch was also moved 30 yards north.

It was in February 1960 that Weston Homes Stadium got its modern look when the club installed the first floodlights. Around that time, they would also record their highest attendance ever for an FA Cup clash against Swansea Town with 30,096 fans in the stands.

Following the Taylor Report, the stadium’s capacity decreased since it had to be converted into an all-seater. The stands would, however, get further improvements by the mid-1990s and in 2001, the pitch also got a complete makeover with a new surface and drainage.

Moy’s End Terrace was replaced by the Motorpoint Stand in 2014 and that same year, the London Road switched names to ABAX Stadium only for it to change further to Weston Homes Stadium in 2018, which stands true to this day.

Tickets to watch Peterborough United at Weston Homes Stadium

Glasgow Rangers: Gerrard turns down Bristol City job

Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has turned down the chance to become the new manager of Bristol City.

The owner of the Championship side, Steve Lansdown, was said to be very interested in making Gerrard the boss at Ashton Gate, and was even reported to have made an offer that would have seen him become the highest paid manager in the second tier, even surpassing Marcelo Bielsa’s £60,000 a week at Leeds United – Gerrard is currently paid £48,000 a week, or £2.5m a year, with the Gers (The Scottish Sun via The Express).

However, it has now emerged that the former Liverpool man has turned down the opportunity to leave Ibrox, and will instead stay at his current club as he continues his quest for a first piece of managerial silverware.

It would have been a surprise if Gerrard had left at this point. Whilst the Scottish Premiership may not be the most competitive league in the world, the 54-time champions are a prestigious club, and he has yet to achieve what he set out to do north of the border – win a major trophy.

This is great news for all involved at the Gers – it shows that Gerrard is committed to the cause and will not give up easily. Now, it is time to make sure that he made the right decision.

Manchester United: Red Devils handed boost in pursuit of Kai Havertz by Bayer Leverkusen director

Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Kai Havertz.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has revealed that Havertz’s future is “still not decided” amid rampant transfer speculation. The youngster has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich but is also considering a move to the Premier League.

Earlier this week, Manchester Evening News revealed that the 20-year-old is open to the idea of moving to Old Trafford in the summer. Last month, The Times reported that he is being tracked by Ed Woodward, as well as Bayern, Barcelona and Premier League rivals Liverpool.

After breaking into the first team, the youngster has made a name for himself at the BayArena, as he has scored 11 goals and supplied five assists in 23 Bundesliga games for Peter Bosz’s side this season, taking 1.9 shots per game, averaging 2.1 key passes and successfully completing two dribbles on average (via WhoScored).

Given his performances so far, it is hardly surprising he has attracted attention from a number of clubs across Europe.

Rolfes admitted to Marca that “his future is not decided at all yet” despite the fact that Havertz signed a contract which could keep him at the club until 2022.

This should give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a confidence boost going into the transfer window. The Norwegian has made it clear that he is keen to add to the growing pool of young prospects at the Theatre of Dreams and the German international seems to fit that bill.

Admittedly, United also remain in the race to sign Jadon Sancho, and it is unlikely that the board will be able to afford to buy both young prospects in the summer, given the economic uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. It is worth pointing out that Sancho is valued at a staggering £105.3m and Havertz is priced at £72.9m via Transfermarkt.

Solskjaer clearly has a dilemma on his hands and fans will have to wait and see what deals can be made in these unprecedented circumstances.

United fans, do you think the board should sign Kai Havertz in the summer? Let us know in the comments below!

Aston Villa fans react as former manager candidate Thierry Henry is sacked by Monaco

[ad_pod ]

As reported by BBC Sport, Monaco have given manager Thierry Henry the boot after the Arsenal legend failed to impress given 20 games at the helm. Henry took over from Leonardo Jardim in October but has been unable to lift Monaco out of the relegation zone.

The 41-year-old was linked with the vacant Aston Villa job after Steve Bruce was sacked but ended up taking a role in his native France instead, while Villa appointed then Brentford boss Dean Smith as their new manager.

Smith has done an unremarkable job so far but has kept his side in touching distance of the play-off spots, even if the Villans will have to both pull off some excellent results and count on others going their way between now and the end of the season if they are to earn promotion.

The 47-year-old currently boasts a 35% win rate with Villa having emerged victorious in six out of 17 games so far, while Henry won five out of 20 during his short tenure at Monaco, equalling a 25% win rate. However, the Frenchman lost a whopping 11 games, while Smith has been on the losing end of just 5 matches.

While many were surely hoping for the commercially appealing appointment of Henry when the Midlands outfit were in managerial limbo, it seems most of the Villa faithful are counting their lucky stars that the former striker snubbed them, meaning they went for sensible Smith.

Inspired by the bridge between Manchester and Salford that was built during the industrial revolution, the iconic red rose takes its shape as an all-over geometric pattern across the entire jersey.

The bridge over the river Irwell is an enduring symbol of the deep connection Mancunians have with the city’s industrial legacy. It is widely considered a mark of Manchester’s strength and how, like the industrial revolution, the city influenced the wider world.

The bold striking new pattern sits on a primarily red block design with the club crest and adidas logo featured on the chest in white. Completing the design is a striped flat knit crew neck collar, which sports the red, white, and black club colours.

The new Manchester United 2023-24 home kit will be worn for the first time when Manchester United play Leeds United FC in Norway on July 12.

South Korea Women's World Cup 2023 squad: Who's in & who's out?

Who will Colin Bell pick in his final squad? GOAL takes a look…

The South Korean national women's team is set to play in their fourth FIFA Women's World Cup finals in July, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand.

Their best finish was in the 2015 edition when they reached the round of 16 but were beaten 3-0 by France.

They qualified for the 2023 Women's World Cup by virtue of making it to the last four of the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup. In fact, they surpassed the qualification standard and made it to the final of the continental competition but lost 3-2 to China to finish as runners-up.

In 2023, they have not been able to hit the top gear as they have won only two out of five matches. They lost all three matches against England, Belgium and Italy respectively in the Clark Cup before returning to winning ways against Zambia at home in April

They have been drawn in Group H in the Women's World Cup along with South Korea, Colombia, Morocco and Germany.

Who can Ian Bell pick in the World Cup squad? GOAL takes a look…

Getty ImagesGOALKEEPERS

Kim Jung-mi is the number one choice between the sticks for South Korea. She was the preferred shot-stopper during the Clark Cup friendlies in Europe and also had the gloves during one of the friendlies against Zambia.

She has more than 130 caps to her name and there is little doubt that Bell trusts her skills under the bar. Barring any injury concerns she should have the gloves in Australia.

Yoon Young-geul, the 35-year-old keeper of Swedish side BK Hacken is another experienced candidate and is a solid backup keeper. While the third spot can go to Suwon UDC's young keeper Kim Kyeong-hee.

Name Club

Bell sets his defence up according to the strengths of the opposition. While he mostly likes to field a three-woman backline, sometimes he can shift to a more traditional four players in defence.

The three central defenders are most likely to be Kim Hye-ri, Lim Seon-joo, and Hong Hye-ji. The first two are counted among the most experienced candidates in the squad and boast of having more than 100 caps. Meanwhile, 26-year-old Hong is following in the footsteps of his senior colleagues and has established herself as an integral part of Korea's defence.

If one of the three is unavailable or injured, then Shim Seo-yeon or Kim Yun-Ji is called upon to fill in the vacancy.

Whereas, if Bell shifts to a back four, which is rare, then among the three centre-backs two are chosen, while Choo Hyo-Joo and Jang Sel-gi are the two full-backs. And in the other case, Choo & Jang are deployed as the right and left wing-backs.

Bell usually has three midfielders at the centre of the park to complement his two advanced wing-backs. While two of them are likely to position themselves right before the central defenders to plug in the gaps, one of them will have the license to join the attack.

The manager has plenty of quality at his disposal and he usually likes to shuffle the pack. Cho So-Hyun and Ji So-yun are the two most experienced players with close to 150 caps each and they are the two preferred options at the centre of the park.

They are mostly joined by Son Hwa-yeon of Incheon Hyundai SRA in an advanced role. Whereas, Jang Yu-bin of Seoul WFC is an upcoming talent whom Bell likes to introduce in the latter stages of the game and she will be the one to look out for in Australia.

Bell is spoilt for choices when it comes to selecting his forwards. Jung Seol-bin might be given the responsibility to lead the lines. The 33-year-old plies her trade with Incheon Hyundai SRA and has 22 international goals in her career.

Meanwhile, Brighton's Lee Geum-min acts as the perfect foil for Jung. The Brighton forward scored five goals in two matches against Zambia in April and will hope to bring her best form in the tournament.

Park Eun-sun is another option and she has the experience to make a difference at the highest stages. On a few occasions, Bell has used Park & Jung as two strikers upfront with Lee operating from a bit deeper position.

Is the WSL in trouble? Women's Champions League winners and losers as Arsenal struggle against Ajax

The Lionesses may be European champions but England's clubs are toiling, as underlined by Arsenal's draw with Ajax.

Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain – those are just some of the huge clubs that were involved in Women's Champions League qualifying this week. And they didn't have it easy.

A quick glance at the fixtures for these huge clubs and some might've expected relatively stress-free progress to the group stages for them.

And yet, Arsenal were held by an exciting, up-and-coming Ajax side and Juve drew with Denmark's HB Koge, while Bayern and PSG only recorded slender one-goal wins over Real Sociedad and BK Hacken, respectively.

With plenty of drama going on, here's a look at the winners and losers from this week's action…

GettyWINNER: Caroline Weir

It's fair to say things are going quite well for Caroline Weir in Spain.

The Scot left Manchester City for Real Madrid in the summer and would score her first goal for her new club against her former one, sending City crashing out of the Champions League in the first round of qualifying.

She has settled into Madrid's team with ease, having been given a flexible role by manager Alberto Toril that seems to suit her down to a tee.

On Wednesday night, she scored her second and third goals of the season in a 3-0 win over Rosenborg, the first of them an absolute rocket.

There is a long list of reasons to be excited about what Las Blancas could do this season and Weir's storming start is one of them.

AdvertisementGettyLOSER: The Women's Super League

With the Lionesses having just been crowned champions of Europe, it's clear there are a lot of great things happening with women's football in England right now. However, there are ongoing issues at club level.

Four of the last eight Women's Champions League seasons lacked an English semi-finalist, and just one Women's Super League club has reached the final in the past 15 years.

Last year, Manchester City went out in qualifying, Chelsea were eliminated in the group stages and Arsenal bowed out in the last eight. Consequently, England's coefficient has taken a real hit, meaning the automatic group-stage qualification spot allocated to the WSL champions is now at risk.

With City going out early again this year, Arsenal's 2-2 draw at home to Ajax in the first game of their two-legged tie will have concerned more than just the Gunners' fans.

Jonas Eidevall and his team did well to turn things around after a poor first half but they will have their work cut out when they go to the Netherlands next week.

A win won't just be important for Arsenal, but for the whole of the WSL.

GettyWINNER: The Netherlands

There was plenty that stood out in Ajax's clash with Arsenal on Tuesday and one was how bright the future is for the Netherlands.

Victoria Pelova, the 23-year-old who was linked with Arsenal in the summer, was the best player on the pitch in the first half. Romee Leuchter, aged 21, scored twice to strengthen her goal-scoring reputation, following a 31-goal season last term.

However, the player of the match was arguably Isa Kardinaal, the 17-year-old centre-back who excelled against some of Europe's best forwards.

With Pelova and Leuchter adding Euro 2022 to their growing list of big experiences this past summer, and Kardinaal having represented her nation at the U17 edition, this Champions League run is only giving them further opportunity to develop into top-class players.

It hasn't been a great year for the Netherlands' national team, who disappointed at the Euros, but with talents like these coming through – alongside other exciting prospect such as PSV's Esmee Brugts and Twente's Wieke Kaptein – there are reasons to be optimistic about what the next generation might deliver.

GettyLOSER: Scandinavian clubs

Once upon a time, Scandinavia ruled Europe.

It had clubs in all but one of the first seven UWCL finals, with Umea two-time winners. Back then, they had Marta, the greatest female footballer of all time, while many more of the game's greats – such as her compatriot Formiga – were also plying their trade in Sweden.

However, the rise of clubs with hugely successful men's teams has made things tricky. From a financial perspective, Sweden's finest can no longer compete.

Scandinavia is still producing top players and has great national teams but the country's stars are moving abroad now in search of a higher standard of football.

For example, Rosenborg, once a semi-finalist under the name Trondheims-Orn, were dispatched 3-0 on Wednesday by a Real Madrid side that has only existed for two years. In fact, none of the five clubs from Denmark, Norway or Sweden won their first legs.

There were positive results and performances – Koge drew with Juventus while Hacken troubled Paris Saint-Germain in a 2-1 defeat – but the weaker coefficients Scandinavian countries have today is the reason why their clubs are given these incredibly hard ties in the first place.

We will see at least one representative from Scandinavia in the group stages, from the winner of the Brann vs Rosengard match-up, and those facing tough second legs could, of course, overcome the odds to join them.

But qualifying so far has really highlighted how the landscape of women's football has changed.
