The Big PictureThe match may be of little significance for the home side but, with one semi-final spot up for grabs and two teams in the fray, this is almost a quarter-final for the Chennai Super Kings, who have been sputtering of late. Win tomorrow and they make the last four; lose, and the race for that semi-final spot shifts to Mumbai Indians’ final game against the Bangalore Royal Challengers. If Mumbai lose that game, Chennai go through. For Chennai to be knocked out, Mumbai must win. Even if tomorrow’s match is abandoned, Chennai will qualify. For Deccan, this is their last chance for a home win. They can draw inspiration from Kolkata’s consolation win against Kings XI Punjab and give their home supporters something to cheer. They will, however, remain at the bottom of the pile no matter what the result is and that’s a bitter pill to swallow for their captain Adam Gilchrist, who probably hasn’t seen failure of this magnitude through his playing career.Tournament position Chennai Super Kings: P13, W7, L6, NRR -0.241
Deccan Chargers: P13, W2, L11, NRR -0.478Form (last five matches, most recent first) Chennai Super Kings: LLWLW
Deccan Chargers: LLLLLWatch out for … A final salvo from Rohit Sharma. Most of his 404 runs may have come in lost causes but his batting under pressure has been one of the most impressive features in the IPL. Another big innings could see him top the batting charts for Deccan. Stephen Fleming. He has had a very quiet tournament by his own standards and tomorrow’s crunch scenario should push him to deliver. For inspiration, he can look back at his unbeaten 134 against South Africa in Johannesburg in the 2003 World Cup, which guided New Zealand home in a must-win situation. Revenge for Chennai. Deccan upstaged Chennai on home turf the last time these teams met. Incidentally, it was Deccan’s last victory in the tournament.Team newsChennai pushed Rajasthan Royals close during their chase of 212 on Saturday so it’s unlikely they will tinker with their line-up. Joginder Sharma could earn a recall and if he does, Abhinav Mukund may have to sit out. Abhinav faced just one ball in the loss on Saturday.Chennai Super Kings (probable): 1 Parthiv Patel (wk), Stephen Fleming, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Albie Morkel, 5 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt), 6 S Badrinath, 7 Abhinav Mukund/ Joginder Sharma, 8 Manpreet Gony, 9 L Balaji, 10, Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Makhaya Ntini.Deccan would want to sign off in style so they may not experiment with too many inexperienced players. Shahid Afridi, if included, would have one last chance to play true to his reputation. His campaign so far has been very disappointing and Deccan need more from him. Nuwan Zoysa, who’s played just three games, could come in for Chaminda Vaas, who hasn’t had a great tournament either.Deccan Chargers (probable): 1 Adam Gilchrist (capt/wk), 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 Rohit Sharma, 4 Venugopal Rao, 5 Shahid Afridi, 6 Ravi Teja, 7 Arjun Yadav, 8 Sanjay Bangar, 9 Nuwan Zoysa, 10 RP Singh, 11 P Vijaykumar.Stats and trivia Rohit Sharma’s eight catches is the most for the tournament so far. Deccan have scored the most runs in boundaries – 1302 – among all teams. Chennai are third at 1256.Quotes”We are not concerned about the Chargers’ record in the IPL. We would like to focus our team rather than worry about the opposition. We had a good start to the tournament due to some exceptional players in our team. We are in with a chance to qualify.”
“It’s not what we set out to do.”

Sheffield United: Fans react to Aaron Ramsdale update

Sheffield United stopper Aaron Ramsdale has received a late call into the England EURO 2020 squad, as initially selected goalkeeper Dean Henderson has withdrawn after sustaining an injury [Sky Sports].

Unfortunately for the Manchester United stopper, he is now no longer able to take part in England’s quest for major glory, following news he missed training for the second time this week [Sky Sports].

Revealed to be a hip issue that has caused Henderson serious discomfort, there is now a spot for Ramsdale to fill in the 26-man pack as the Three Lions prepare for the visit of Scotland on Friday [BBC].

The former Bournemouth man will have to undergo strict COVID-19 protocols, before being allowed to enter the English camp [BBC].

Serving as a fine reward for another strong season, no wonder loads of Sheffield United diehards took to Twitter to rejoice at these latest developments.

Southampton close to Perraud signing

talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has delivered a promising update on Southampton’s interest in Stade Brest defender Romain Perraud, which will surely leave Saints fans excited.

The South Coast club have regularly been linked with the French defender in recent weeks and now it seems as if a deal is close to completion, as Crook confirmed on Twitter that a deal is now close to reaching a successful conclusion for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, who have seemingly seen off interest from Leeds United and Newcastle United to sign the 23-year-old.

Perraud enjoyed an excellent campaign with Brest in Ligue 1 last season, making 36 appearances in the French top-flight, in which he contributed three goals and seven assists, earning a solid 6.84 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Hasenhuttl is in desperate need of a left-back ahead of next season, after it was confirmed that Ryan Bertrand would leave the club following the expiry of his contract, whilst Jake Vokins’ lack of appearances on loan at Sunderland in League One emphasised that he is not ready for a starting role in the Premier League.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

Therefore, it is great news for the Austrian that Southampton are close to confirming their first signing of the summer transfer window, and if Perraud can replicate his performances with Brest in the Premier League next season, then he will surely prove to be a shrewd acquisition.

We may well see a change in shape in order to accommodate Perraud next season, as last season saw Kyle Walker-Peters regularly bomb forward down the right-hand side from right-back, whereas Bertrand would play a much more conservative role and effectively become part of a back three.

However, Perraud very much seems to be an attacking full-back, so it seems unlikely that he will be utilised in a similar role, which could prove to be a good thing for the Saints when you consider their lack of attacking impetus in a number of games towards the end of the season.

Considering the dire need for defensive reinforcements, particularly at full-back, Southampton fans will surely be absolutely delighted with this update from Crook, and hopefully, Perraud’s signing will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

And, in other news… Southampton handed huge boost with “explosive” star, Semmens must deliver

AAP23-Jul-2002MELBOURNE, July 23 AAP – Technology and coaching have caught up with the humble cricket scorer. The Australian team will do away with the position of scorer later this year, replacing the role with an assistant coach. The new job will involve performance analysis, using the digital video technology now used throughout top-class cricket.Mike Walsh, who was first scorer with the national team on the 1989 Ashes team and had a full-time role since 1997, will lose his post because of the restructuring.”The Australian team has been well serviced in this area in the past, but we believe closer focus on the technical component of elite performance will complement the existing coaching structure,” Australian Cricket Board chief executive James Sutherland said in a statement.Walsh has been a popular member of the national team’s support staff. His role will end this September at the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka, where the new coach will also join the team. The ACB wants the new person to have elite coaching experience. The new team support staff will be John Buchanan (coach), Steve Bernard (team manager), Errol Alcott (physiotherapist), Jock Campbell (physical performance manager) and the new assistant.

Kaif carries Indians to safety

Mohammad Kaif stood firm as the Indian tourists battled to a draw in their three-day match with West Indies A at Arundel

Sean Beynon18-Jul-2002Mohammad Kaif stood firm as the Indian tourists battled to a draw in theirthree-day match with West Indies A at Arundel.Kaif made 77 after the fall of early wickets had threatened to embarrass the Indians. At one stage, the West Indies’ reserves had reduced VVS Laxman’s side to 149/6, a fragile lead of 136.Seamer Jermaine Lawson seized wickets at regular intervals. The 20-year-oldJamaican returned figures of six for 76 his first five-wicket haul in 15 first-class matches. The Indians were dismissed for 255, the match effectively safe.West Indies A never looked like chasing 240 at six runs an over. Daren Gangawas clean bowled early by Ajit Agarkar, with Devon Smith, Donovan Pagon andLendl Simmons following in quick succession as the score slipped to 57/4. Ryan Hinds (10 not out) and Dwayne Bravo’s unbeaten 15 ensured there were no final twists and both captains settled for the draw.Kaif, whose unbeaten 87 led India to an extraordinary win in the NatWest series last week, remained confident throughout. He added 85 in as many minutes for the seventh wicket with Dinesh Mongia (27).Kaif hit eight fours and a six in his 126 ball-knock. He hits well through the covers and latches on to anything short with a textbook pull. The youngster looks to be another impressive find in an astonishing batting line-up. He will not play in the Test matches unless there are injuries.Lawson struck early on the third morning, picking up the impressive youngster Parthiv Patel for 20. Opener Wasim Jaffer eased to a competent fifty before he was brilliantly caught by a diving Ryan Hinds for 52. Jaffer hit seven boundaries in a confidence boosting innings heading into next week’s first Test with England.Laxman, batting in an unusually defensive style, blunted the opposition for an hour before giving a catch to stand-in keeper Lendl Simmons as Marlon Black claimed his first wicket. With the game almost safe, Lawson picked up Mongia and Agarkar in successiveballs. Simmons took another catch to give Reon King a second wicket, whileLawson wrapped the innings up as Ganga caught Kaif. This West Indian team is developing well; they are playing positive, livelycricket and appear to have shed the downcast, sloppy attitude that wassymptomatic the early part of the tour. They play Warwickshire on Saturday, eager for another strong showing.

WHU fans react to Moyes news

Many West Ham United fans have been reacting to the news that David Moyes believes a combined fee of £45m for Jesse Lingard and Tammy Abraham would be fair.

The Hammers have enjoyed a fantastic campaign, finishing in sixth place in the Premier League – that means they will be embarking on a Europa League run next term. As such, Moyes and the rest of the club will need to plan ahead and start thinking about new signings they can add to the squad.

The Irons have been heavily linked with moves for both Lingard (Daily Mail) and Abraham (The Athletic) this summer. According to West Ham website Claret & Hugh, Moyes believes that both players could be signed permanently for a combined fee of £45m.

Lingard has just one year left on his deal at Manchester United (Transfermarkt), while Abraham’s exclusion from the Champions League final squad for Chelsea indicates that he is not a part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans.

The former excelled on loan at West Ham this year, scoring nine goals in 16 games, while the latter was Chelsea’s joint-top scorer for the season with 12 goals despite often being overlooked by Tuchel.

The news was shared on Twitter by @WestHam_Central and it duly attracted plenty of attention. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on the development – one said that David Sullivan should get an ‘owner of the year award’ if the Irons pull off this double coup for £45m.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about Moyes’ stance

“That’s fair because Jesse is 28 on the last year of his contract and Abraham didn’t even get into the 23 man squad last night for Chelsea”
